Box Score 2 BENTONVILLE, Ark. – The Washburn Ichabods went 1-1 in the first day of the 8-State Classic in Bentonville, Ark., topping Upper Iowa 8-4 before falling to Drury 5-4 in 11 innings on Friday. Washburn continues play on Saturday with William Jewell at 9 a.m. and East Central at 1 p.m.
Game 1 – Washburn 8, Upper Iowa 4
Washburn scored seven runs in the final three innings rallying for an 8-4 win over Upper Iowa for its third straight win.
Washburn went up 1-0 when
Ashley Ruder's triple scored
Dakota Sanders in the top of the third inning. After the Peacocks scored three runs in the fourth, Washburn scored three in the top of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
In the inning, Sanders led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt. After Ruder drew a walk and
Erica Harper reached on a walk as well,
Taylor Kemp was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then
Jordan Erickson's 2-RBI single put the Ichabods up 4-3.
The Peacocks tied the score with a solo run in the fifth, but again Washburn came back with another three runs in the sixth inning. After Sanders reached again with a walk,
Lexie Myers walked and then Ruder walked to load the bases.
Savannah Moore was hit by a pitch scoring one and then a 2-RBI single by Kemp put Washburn up 7-4.
The Ichabods added a solo run in the seventh when
Megan Stegman hit a homer to center wrapping up the scoring and the win for Washburn.
Kelsee Henry improved to 2-4 with two strikeouts pitching five innings while
Ashley Wills tossed to perfect innings in relief with a strikeout.
Ruder and Kemp each had two hits while Kemp drove in three runs and Erickson had two.
Game 2 – Drury 5, Washburn 4 (11 innings)
The Washburn Ichabods had their three-game winning streak snapped in a 5-4 extra inning loss to Drury in the second game of action on Friday.
Washburn took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when
Megan Stegman's double scored
Lacie Myers who walked. Drury tied the score in the top of the fifth inning and took the lead in the sixth inning at 2-1 after scoring a run.
Washburn tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh when
Lexie Myers' single scored
Lacie Myers who doubled earlier in the inning.
The Panthers scored one in the top of the eighth, but Washburn again tied the score after
Savannah Moore led off the eighth with a double and then moved to third after a passed ball and then scored on a wild pitch.
Neither team scored in the ninth inning. In the 10
th inning using the international tiebreaker,
Erica Harper came around and scored on an RBI single by
Jordan Erickson. The 11
th inning saw the Panthers score to go up 5-4.
Washburn went down in order in the 11
th in the loss.
Ashley Wills started the game and allowed one hit with five strikeouts in four innings.
Samantha Carson pitched the next four innings and then
Kelsee Henry tossed the final three without giving up an earned run.
Erickson and Stegman had two hits to lead the Ichabods (3-10).
