Opening Tip
• Washburn opens the 2017 postseason by playing host to Southwest Baptist on Monday, Feb. 27 in Lee Arena in the first round of the MIAA Tournament.
• It will be the second meeting between the two schools in nine days as the Ichabods defeated the Bearcats 65-53 on Feb. 18 in Lee Arena.
• Washburn also won the first meeting on Jan. 26 in Bolivar 76-63.
• The Ichabods finished the MIAA slate in a tie for fourth place with Missouri Southern, Fort Hays State and Central Oklahoma, but will be the sixth seed in the tournament after the tiebreakers were applied. Southwest Baptist is the 11th seed.

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods wrapped up the sixth seed after finishing in a four-way tie for fourth place in the MIAA standings with a 69-50 win in head coach
Bob Chipman's final regular season game in Lee Arena. Prior to the start of the game, the dedication of the naming of the court to "
Bob Chipman Court" also took place.
Washburn (19-9, 12-8 MIAA) was propelled to its fourth-straight win by jumping out to a 9-0 after jumpers by
Javion Blake and
Randall Smith and a 3-pointer by senior
Colton Anderson who was making his first career start followed by a layup by fellow senior
Jeremy Lickteig with 17:29 to play in the first half.
The teams traded baskets and Northeastern State, who earned the 12th seed, would score seven straight to cut the lead to four with 9:12 to play in the half, before an 809 by the Ichabods pushed the lead back to 12 at 29-17 as Washburn would go on to lead by 14 at the break at 38-24.
In the second half, the RiverHawks cut the lead to 10 after a 7-0 run at 51-41, but the Ichabods put the game away with a 16-5 run leading to the 19-point win.
Cameron Wiggins led the Ichabods with 16 points and Blake finished with 13 and Smith finished with 10 to lead the Ichabods.
Brady Skeens finished with 19 rebounds adding seven points and three blocks.
Washburn shot 44 percent from the field hitting 14 of 27 shots in the second half holding the RiverHawks to 26 percent overall from the field including 7 of 26 in the second half.
Washburn outrebounded the RiverHawks (5-22, 4-15 MIAA) 51 to 25 in the game outscoring NSU 34 to 18 in the paint and using 16 offensive rebounds for 14 second chance points.

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods won their ninth game in a row over Southwest Baptist in a 65-53 win over the Bearcats in Lee Arena to win its second straight game.
The Ichabods (17-9, 10-7 MIAA) led 31-29 at the break as
Randall Smith broke a 29-all tie with two seconds left and then coming out of the break, he recorded three-straight layups to push Washburn to a 37-29 lead with 18:08 to play forcing the Bearcats into a timeout.
SBU (14-12, 7-10 MIAA) cut the lead to four at 46-42 with 11:02 to play, but the Ichabods used an 8-0 run over the next 2:42 with
Brady Skeens scoring six of the points stretching the Ichabod lead to 12 with 8:20 to go.
Twice the Bearcats cut the lead to seven down the stretch, but would not get any closer as the Ichabods picked up the win.
Smith led the Ichabods with 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting and
Brady Skeens recorded his 22nd double double of his career with 13 points and 19 rebounds adding four blocks.
Javion Blake added 13 points.
Logan Hovey scored 11 for Southwest Baptist.
Washburn finished 21 of 36 from the free throw line while the Bearcats were 18 of 31 overall, but 5 of 14 in the second half. Washburn shot 40 percent in the game going 21 of 52 overall holding the Bearcats to 27 percent hitting only 7 of 26 shots in the second half, with five coming from 3-point range.
The Ichabods outrebounded the Bearcats 47 to 42 as SBU came into the game with a 7.9 rebound margin.
Last Time Out For Southwest Baptist
Southwest Baptist 66, Southwest Baptist 62 -- Feb. 25, 2017
Bolivar, Mo. - For the first time in five years the Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team has secured a winning record after knocking off Nebraska-Kearney 66-62 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bearcats improve to 15-13 (8-11 MIAA) on the season.
In a game in which neither team led by more than 7 points in the second half, it was tight from the start. UNK opened up the scoring, but Logan Hovey layup tied the game at 2-2 in the early going. With SBU holding a 17-16 lead with 11:26 left in the first half, the Bearcats went on a 10-0 run to extend their lead to double figures. Layups from Cartree Pettis and Karim Mouliom kicked off the run, followed by a 6-6 performance at the line from three different Bearcats. Kearney cut it to nine on two separate occasions, but a Brian Patterson layup with 2:53 left in the half gave SBU a 31-20 lead. However, UNK would end the half on a 7-0 run as the Bearcats went into the break with a 31-27 lead.
Hovey kicked off the second half with a layup to push the Bearcat lead to six before UNK responded with a 9-3 run to tie the game at 35-35 with 17:08 left in the contest. SBU answered back with a 5-0 run from Cartier Dean, but again the Lopers responded with five straight points to again tie the game at 40-40. Four lead changes occurred over the next two minutes of play, before UNK held a 49-46 lead with 11:18 remaining. SBU would re-take the lead on a Hovey three with 9:17 to go, but Kearney came right back to re-take a small lead. Trailing 58-56 with 3:01 remaining, the Bearcats used a 10-1 run to put the game out of reach for the Lopers. Hovey scored five straight to give SBU the lead, and a pair of free throws from Dean and Woodfall eventually gave SBU a 66-59 lead with 7 seconds to go. UNK would hit a three at the buzzer, but the Bearcats came away with the 66-62 victory.
Logan Hovey had a strong afternoon for SBU, scoring a game high 26 points on 8 of 12 shooting from the field, while Cartier Dean had 14 points and Brian Patterson chipped in 10. On the glass Kalehl Brown and Louis Baltazar each had 7 boards, while Baltazar dished out a team high 4 assists in the win. As a team SBU shot 41.2% from the field, 23.5% from beyond the arc, and 80.0% from the line.
