TOPEKA, Kan. --- The Washburn Ichabod baseball team suffered a 9-7 loss in its second game of the series with Pittsburg State Saturday at Falley Field.
The Ichabods (14-8, 6-5 MIAA) were edged out in the slugfest, 13-12.
Josh Crosby had a team-high three hits while
Brett Nickle and
Tanner Triggs each finished with two. Five WU batters drove in runs with Nickle's two RBI leading the way.
Lance Barkley (5-1) was dealt his first loss of the season as he conceded seven runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.
Josh Ramirez pitched one inning allowing two runs with one hit and two walks while
Jaren Kutzke tossed three scoreless innings.
Trailing 3-0 in third, WU responded when Nickle drove in Crosby and
Riley Krane with two outs. Nickle then advanced to second on wild pitch before scoring on an RBI from Triggs. Prior to the inning's final out Washburn took a 4-3 lead thanks to an RBI by
Kasey Clark.
The advantage was short-lived however as the Gorillas tacked on four more runs in the fifth to move into 7-4 lead.
A pair of runs by the Ichabods in the sixth pulled them within one (7-6) but Pittsburg State answered with a two-run seventh. Washburn pulled a run back in the seventh on PSU throwing error but it was not enough as the game settled at 9-7.
Washburn will try to win its third MIAA series when it returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m.
