EMPORIA, Kan. --- The 35th-ranked Washburn men's tennis team dominated from start to finish in its 118
th meeting with in-state rival Emporia State, ultimately defeating the Hornets 8-1.
Washburn set the tone early after securing all three doubles points. The regionally-ranked pairing of
Alejandro Valarezo and
Blake Hunter defeated a pair of Hornet netters 8-3.
Matt Barlow and
Tommy Hunter won at No. 2 doubles in an 8-4 decision.
Chase Brill and
Paul Haase teamed up to down a Hornet duo on court three 8-4.
With a three-point advantage in hand the Ichabods headed into singles play. Senior,
Matt Barlow, continued his last campaign as an Ichabod with a 6-0 win at No. 3 singles by default after an Emporia State netter was injured.
Haase clinched the match for Washburn after defeating Farhan Sadique in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

st-ranked Valarezo couldn't find a rhythm and was defeated in three sets at the No. 1 spot 7-5, 6-7(4-7), 6-2 handing Emporia State its only point of the match.
Blake Hunter downed Oliver Dixon in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 to widen the lead for Washburn.
Younger brother
Tommy Hunter notched a win in a thrilling three-set match at No. 4 singles. Hunter defeated Matheus Mota 6-7 (10-12), 7-5, 12-10.
Chase Brill closed out the 118
th turnpike tussle with a win at No. 6 singles in straight sets over Anton Levanovich, 6-3, 6-2.
Washburn will return to action tomorrow when it visits Division I foe Wichita State before heading abck to Topeka on April 12 for a senior day showdown against Baker University.
