Baseball falls to UCM after five-run fifth

WARRENSBURG, Mo. --- Washburn baseball dropped a 10-5 decision during game two of its series Saturday to Central Missouri at Crane Stadium.

The Ichabods (20-28, 11-24 MIAA) rallied back from a four-run deficit in the fifth to claim a narrow 5-4 advantage. The big inning for WU began with back-to-back singles by Kasey Clark and Cole Gardner before JB Eary drew a walk to load the bases. Darian Abram then pushed Clark and Gardner across with double down the left field line to make cut the Mule lead to 4-2.

Bowe Behymer then let loose on 1-0 offering for a three-run shot. The blast to left field was Behymer's fourth of the season and gave WU its 5-4 lead.

WU bats then went cold as they had in the previous four frames with the Ichabods recording just two hits during the last four innings.

Central Missouri answered the Ichabod fifth with a three spot in the sixth to regain the lead at 7-5 before plating three more in the eighth.

Behymer and Gardner each posted multi-hit performances as Behymer went 2-for-5 while Gardner finished 2-for-4. Gardner also set a career-high for stolen bases in a season with 12. Eary finished the day with two walks and stolen base.

Quentin McGrath was credited with a no decision. McGrath conceded four runs with two earned on three hits during four innings of work. Maustin Otterstatter was charged with the loss as he pitched 1.1 innings and surrendered three runs and one hit.

Washburn closes the series and the 2017 season on Sunday with first-pitch slated for 1 p.m.
