TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday, falling 4-1 to Newman University after starting the week with a 1-1 tie against Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
Tera Lynch scored the lone goal for the Ichabods on Thursday's game against the Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers to tie for the team lead in points with Ellie Karloff. On Sunday against the Jets, freshman Haley Schroeder kept the Ichabods from being shut out when she scored her first career goal off of an assist by Paige Ledesma.
Lynch's goal on Thursday came in the 75th minute, opening a late 1-0 lead against the Rangers. With just 4:40 left on the clock, however, Karla Lopez scored the equalizer for NWOSU to send the game into overtime.
The overtime period saw an offensive drought for the Ichabods, as they did not send a single shot towards NWOSU goalkeeper Kylee Loustaunau.
Against Newman, the Ichabods fell behind in the 13th minute on a goal by the Jets' Rosa Urista-Chico, her second goal of the season.
The Jets then scored two goals within 17 seconds of one another, one by Grace Linton in the 22nd minute, then another by Colleen Howland in the 23rd.
Down 3-0 in the first half, the Ichabods were able to cut the lead with Schroeder's goal in the 43rd minute, where the score remained 3-1 until halftime.
Newman surged into the second half with a goal just five minutes in, Howland's second of the game off of a corner kick assist by Emma Steward. From there, the Ichabods were unable to muster much offense, shooting just three times, two of them on goal.
This week's games against Emporia State and the University of Nebraska at Kearney will not count towards the Ichabods' conference standings.
