TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabods both reached and snapped a two-match losing streak this past week, losing to Emporia State 2-1 Friday, and winning 2-0 against Nebraska-Kearney Sunday.
On Friday, the Hornets scored two first half goals to set themselves ahead of the Ichabods by the 25th minute. The Ichabods managed just one shot on goal in the first half with 12 seconds to go, which was saved by Hornets' goalkeeper Bethany Reeves.
The first Hornet goal came off of a bizarre play in which the ball careened off the post, resulting in a scramble that squeaked by Washburn goalkeeper Kaitlin Minnich in the 17th minute.
Just seven minutes later, the Hornets came back on a breakaway, where Ashlynn Summar shot right into Minnich and the rebound came straight back to Summar, who scored on her second goal of the match.
The score remained 2-0 until the 82nd minute, when the Ichabods were finally able to get on the board with a breakaway goal of her own. With her second goal of the season, Swanson tied for the team lead in goals with Ellie Karloff, and in total points with Karloff and Tera Lynch.
The Ichabods were unable to get another shot off in the final 8:43 of the match, with another goal tying the game up at 2-2.
On Sunday against the Lopers, a goal for each half set the pace for the Ichabods, both of them from players scoring their first goals of the season.
Paige Ledesma scored in the 30th minute off of an assist by Haley Schroeder. Schroeder's assist was her first as an Ichabod, and the goal gave both players three total points for the year.
Kelsi Smith added a goal in the second half, and Minnich recorded her third shutout of the season.
The Ichabods will start their conference slate this week, taking on Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney for the second time.
