TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn junior varsity women's basketball team won its third straight game Tuesday after defeating Missouri Valley College's varsity reserve squad, 79-23.
The Ichabods had a stellar defensive showing, allowing the Vikings to shoot just 19.6 percent from the field. Strong half-court defense led to 32 Missouri Valley turnovers, as four Ichabods had three or more steals led by
Sierra Mortensen's four.
After taking a strong 36-16 halftime lead, the Ichabods did not let up, scoring 43 points in the second half and allowing just seven. The Vikings did not score in the fourth quarter until 45 seconds remained, with a layup from Hana Young being the team's only points in the final period.
Haley Thompson led Washburn with 18 points on 9-14 shooting, while
Riley Doebele added 15 from the bench, and Kaylee Farmer added 12 as the three Ichabods in double figures.
The 56-point win is the largest margin of victory for the Ichabods this season, narrowly passing the first matchup with Missouri Valley on Dec. 3, when the Ichabods won by 55. In their two games, the Ichabods outscored the Vikings a combined 178-67.
The Ichabods will next face Johnson County Community College, in a rematch from Nov. 21, when the Ichabods lost 74-46. The game will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Lee Arena as part of a doubleheader.
