NOTES | WBB faces NW Missouri Saturday in home regular-season finale

TIPPING OFF
• Washburn women's basketball closes its home regular season home schedule Saturday against Northwest Missouri tip-off slated for 1 pm.
• The Ichabods are 15-8 overall and 7-7 in the MIAA, and began the week tied for eighth in the conference standings with Southwest Baptist.
• The Ichabods have hit a rough patch with just three wins in their last seven games after going 11-1 during the first half of the season. 
• Reagan Phelan leads the team in scoring with 15.0 points/game and is making 40.4 percent (107-265)attempts from the field.
• On Jan. 14, Reagan Phelan become the third player in program-history to score 32 points in a single-game and first player with at least 30 in over six seasons.
• Alexis McAfee is the team leader from the charity stripe making 44 of 52 attempts (.846).
• Axelle Bernard is the team's block and rebound leader,  averaging 2.1 blocks and 8.4 boards a game.

A WASHBURN WIN...
• is better than a loss.
• improves its record to 16-8 overall, 8-7 in the MIAA.
• would give head coach Ron McHenry career win number 422, putting him nine shy of tying Patty Dick for the program-record in career wins (431).

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE LATELY?
• The Ichabods are 2-3 in their last five games and are shooting .395 (115-291) on FGs, .257 (26-101) on 3FGs, and .718 (51-71) on FTs and have averaged about 61 points a game.
• During the last five games, opponents have shot .407 (120-295) on FGs, .407 (34-110) on 3FGs, and .309 (51-64) on FTs.
• Phelan is WU's leading scorer in MIAA play, averaging 17.1 points/game, while shooting .416 on FGs, .345 on 3FG, and .903 on FTs with 2.9 assists per game.
• Phelan is averaging 17 ppg, 3.4 assists, and just over a steal a game in the last five contests.
• Alexis McAfee is averaging 10.4 ppg, 1.2 assists, and 4.6 boards a contest over the last five games.
• Axelle Bernard is averaging a team-best 8.6 boards in the last five games alongside 10.4 ppg, 2.0 blocks, and 2.6 assists to go with three double-doubles in the last six outings.

• In the last five minutes this season, WU is shooting .425 (71-167) on FGs, .346 (81-116) on 3FG, and .698 (81-116) on FTs.
• The Ichabods have outscored MIAA opponents, 135-113, during the final five minutes and average 9.4 points/game.

• For the season, Washburn has collected 894 rebounds, averaging 38.9 a game.
• The Ichabods have accounted for roughly 22 percent (196) of their season rebounds within the last five games while boasting a rebound margin of +28.
• Bernard alone has registered 43 boards during the five game stretch is sixth among MIAA leaders in total rebounds (194).
• On the offensive glass the Ichabods hold a +33 margin in offensive rebounds (267-234) for the season.
• In the last five contests, WU has 14 more offensive boards than opponents (66-54).

GETTING DEFENSIVE
• WU is ranked fifth in the MIAA in scoring defense (61.1 ppg) and 71st among NCAA Division II leaders. 
• The Ichabods are also fourth in the MIAA in FG% defense (.379).
• WU's 7.7 steals/game is the league's sixth-best mark.
• Washburn is seventh in the MIAA in forced turnovers per game (15.7).
• Bernard is listed 34th in the nation in total blocks (48) and blocks/game (2.1) and second-overall in the MIAA for both categories.
• Bernard is also among the top 100 rebounders in Div. II, placing 88th in total boards (194), 103rd in per game average (8.4), and 61st in defensive boards per game (6.0). 
• Phelan's 45 total steals and 2.0/game has her listed fourth among MIAA leaders in both categories.

AT THE LINE
• Washburn opened the season shooting .678 from the line through the first seven games.
• Season-high mark .882 came against Nebraska Christian on Nov. 15, as WU made 15 of 17.
• In 14 MIAA games, the Ichabods' free throw percentage is .764 (165-216).
• WU has made 161 of 222 (.725) FTs at Lee Arena this season.
• In the last five games, Phelan is the only Ichabod shooting better than .800 from the line (.923/24-26)
• McAfee is shooting .750 (6-8) in the last five games.
• Against the MIAA, Cara Donley has converted 23 of 29 (.793) attempts from the line.

THE STARTING FIVE
• The Ichabods have rolled out four different starting lineups this season with the Bernard, Phelan, McAfee and Taylor Blue being the constants in each variation.
• The collective group average about 50 points a game (50.5) for the season, while putting up 49.1 against the MIAA.
• Against the MIAA, starters are shooting .401 on FGs, .301 on 3FG, .822 on FTs.
• McAfee, Phelan and Bernard are each listed among the program's top 20 in minutes per game ... McAfee is fifth, Phelan is seventh and Bernard 16th.

PLAYER NOTES
• Phelan is 21 points shy of tying Emily Shopper (1995-97) for 40th on the Washburn all-time points list with 693.
• Bernard's 48 blocks this season is fifth among single-season block totals and 12 short of the single-season record (60) set by Brenda Shaffer-Dahl in 1988-89.
• McAfee has scored double-figure points in six of the last eight contests.
• Coming off the bench, Mackenize Loe is fourth on the team in scoring with 9.1 points and 16.3 minutes a game.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
• This is the 34th season that Washburn men's and women's basketball have called Lee Arena home, with women's basketball owning a 414-94 mark (.818) in the venue.
• The 500th women's game at Lee Arena was played last Thursday (1/11/18) vs Northeastern State.
• Under head coach Ron McHenry, Washburn is 217-46 all-time when playing at Lee Arena dating back to the 2000-01 campaign. 
• Washburn is 10-4 this season playing at Lee Arena.
• WU ranked sixth in Div. II in attendance last season as it averaged 1,468 fans through 18 games. The Ichabods have been among nation's top drawing teams finishing in the top 10 since the 2000-01 campaign.

ABOUT NORTHWEST MISSOURI
• The Bearcats are 3-19 this season and 2-12 in the MIAA.
• NW Missouri is coming off a 76-62 loss at Emporia State on Wednesday.
• The Bearcats lead the MIAA in made 3PT FG per game (8.1).
• Tanya Meyer has been NWMSU's top scorer in five of the last seven games, scoring 27 points on three occasions ... Meyer is averaging 16 points/game during the seven game stretch. 
• Meyer also leads NW Missouri in FG shooting (.431) and rebounds (9.2/game). 
• The team is led by second-year head coach Buck Scheel.

A LIL' BIT OF HISTORY
• Saturday will be first and only between Washburn Northwest Western this season, while marking the 64th meeting all-time.
• Washburn leads the all-time series, 53-10, including victories in its last nine games.
• The Ichabods are 31-2 when hosting the Bearcats and are riding a 31-game home win streak against NW Missouri dating back to Nov. 30 1985.
• In Maryville, Washburn is 19-6.

WASHBURN TRADITION
The 2017-18 campaign marks the 49th season of Washburn women's basketball. The program is 881-392-1 all-time, has seen 23 seasons with at least 20 wins, and 17 appearances NCAA Division II Tournament appearances with the 2004-05 team crowned as national champions. From Jan. 26, 2005 to Mar. 11, 2006, Washburn won 51 consecutive games. The streak is the longest in NCAA Division II and sixth all-time in NCAA history.

UPCOMING ON THE SCHEDULE
• Washburn will close the season on the road against Emporia State (2/13), Southwest Baptist (2/17), Central Oklahoma (2/22) and Northeastern State (2/24).
• First round of the MIAA Tournament is slated for Feb. 26, location to be announced.
