Washburn women's basketball announces six NLI signees

TOPEKA, Kan. – Washburn head coach Ron McHenry announced the addition of six players to the 2020-21 women's basketball team.
 
"This class of players are very talented athletes that know how to play and win," said McHenry. "With the graduation of some key players and positions at the end of this season, [the incoming players] will be counted on to come in immediately and compete for impact spots. We are very excited and my assistants have done a great job of recruiting this class of players into this program."
 
Lauren Cassaday // Forward // 5-10 // Overland Park, Kan. // Blue Valley North
Three-time basketball letterwinner for the Blue Valley North Mustangs … received all-conference honorable mention accolades twice and was named to the second-team as a junior … as a junior, was an all-state honorable mention … helped the team to a substate championship and fifth place finish at state her sophomore season … also competed in track also a member of the National Honors Society … daughter of Chris and Heidi Cassaday … has one sister, Kayley, who plays volleyball at Tulsa … her father, Chris, played basketball at Morningside College … plans to major in exercise science.
 
McHenry on Cassaday: "Lauren is an athletic forward that plays the game at a high pace. She is a physical player and with her intensity and knowledge of the game, she will be a great piece of this program for the future."
 
Aubree Dewey // Guard // 5-8 // Plainville, Kan. // Plainville HS
A three-year member of the Plainville HS varsity basketball program … named to the Mid-Continent League second team her freshman year … received all-State second team from Sports in Kansas and all-State honorable mention from the Topeka Capital Journal her freshman season … she is a two time MCL first team and all-State first team by Sports in Kansas … her sophomore season she was named a  top-10 scorer and top-five in assists in the state by Sports in Kansas … a two-time Player of the Week by Max Preps/WBCA… helped the Cardinals reach the State Championship finals her junior season … she was a finalist for 2A Player of the Year and a Best Female Athlete finalist for Catch it Kansas … a four year member of the track team, a two year member of the volleyball team and was a member of the cross country team … a three year member of the all-State track team …daughter of Shane and Jami Dewey … has two sisters, Lyric and Maeson, and two brothers, Anders and Quinn … her sister, Maeson, played basketball at Cloud County Community College … planning to major in elementary education.
 
McHenry on Dewey: "Aubree is one of the state's best point guards. She can score from a number of areas on the floor. She is a great athlete that can play both ends and is an exciting player to watch! She is one of the fastest players up and down the floor that we may have in the program."
 
Mackenzie Gamble // Guard // 5-7 // Highlands Ranch, Colo. // Mountain Vista HS
A three-year varsity member of the Mountain Vista basketball team … helped the team advance to the third round of state playoffs all three seasons she's played and to a combined record 48-27 … started on varsity as a freshman and averaged 6.9 ppg, 1.5 rpg, and 1.5 spg … as a sophomore, averaged 7.3 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.8 spg ... in her junior season, averaged 10 ppg, 4 rpg, 3.1 apg, and 3 spg … daughter of Ryan and Bonnie Gamble … has three brothers, Corban, Henry, and William … her mother, Bonnie, played tennis at the University of Florida … plans to major in health management.
 
McHenry on Gamble: "Mackenzie is a combo guard that plays with a great deal of toughness. She can score the basketball, but has the ability and skill to do many other things on the floor at a high level. She possesses a great personality that fits our team and culture."
 
Maddy Hutley // Guard // 5-6 // Alma, Kan. // Wabaunsee HS
A three-year letterwinner for the Wabaunsee Chargers and has helped the team to three league championship titles … a two-time all-state honorable mention and was named to the second-team as a junior … received back-to-back all-league selections as a sophomore and junior and was an honorable mention as a freshman … she helped the Chargers to a second and third place finish in the 2A Kansas state championship … also competed in two seasons of cross country and one season of track and tennis … daughter of Tim and Jan Hutley … has one brother, Evan … plans to major in medicine.
 
McHenry on Hutley: "Maddy is a combo guard that brings intensity to the game. She can score and knows how to play the game. She's a great on-ball defender and knows how to win. She's from nearby Alma and knows the Washburn program and tradition."
 
Lakyn Schieferecke // Guard // 5-10 // McPherson, Kan. // McPherson HS
A three-year basketball player for McPherson HS … helped the Bullpups to a state championship title as a sophomore … the team was the state runner-up her freshman season and placed fourth her junior year … also a three-year member of the soccer team and the Bullpups took third in the state championship her sophomore season … daughter of Joe and Shandell Schieferecke … has two sisters, Ashtyn and Abby … plans to major in nursing.
 
McHenry on Schieferecke: "Lakyn is a multi-position player that can do a number of things on the court. She's a great competitor and will become a good player in this program. She has good size for the wing position. Lakyn knows the game very well and knows how to win as she comes from a winning program."
 
Andrea Sweat // Guard/Small Forward // 6-2 // McPherson, Kan. // McPherson HS
A three-year member of the varsity basketball team at McPherson HS … helped the team to back-to-back appearances in the 4A state championship game and won the state title her sophomore season … contributed to the Bullpups' three league championships and substate championships … also a four-year member of the varsity volleyball team … helped the team to three league championship titles … named all-League first- team her sophomore season in volleyball … two-year member of the track team … daughter of Tracy and Shawn Sweat … her sister Ashley Miller played basketball at Kansas State University...plans on majoring in education.
 
McHenry on Sweat: "Andrea brings height and has a great feel for the game. She can play the perimeter spot and will become a good player in our program. She comes from a winning high school program and knows how to win."
