Women's tennis back in action Saturday for match against Oklahoma Baptist

First Serve … 

The Washburn Ichabods (2-0) look to continue their hot start to the spring season as they travel to Oklahoma City, Okla., this weekend to face the Oklahoma Baptist Lady Bison (0-1). The match is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9, with a start time of 2:30 p.m.

Last Week …

  • The Ichabods swept the spring opening weekend last week in Springfield, Mo., as the posted wins over No. 22 Cameron and Drury.
  • Washburn didn't allow a single point against 22nd-ranked Cameron (0-2) and won the match, 7-0.
  • The Ichabods won the doubles point with wins at the 1 and 3 slot.
  • In the singles competition, it was all Washburn as they won each match down the lineup. 
  • The Ichabods carried their momentum into the following day for the dual against Drury, which Washburn claimed, 4-3.
  • After winning the doubles points, the Ichabods split in singles action and took the match.
  • Alexis Czapinski (6-2) won both of her matches at No. 2 singles while Svea Crohn (5-3) claimed both of her duals at the No. 5 slot. 

 Ichabods in the Rankings …

  • As a team, the Ichabods are ranked No. 6 in the Central Region.
  • Reflecting their finish at the ITA National Cup, Morrissey and Czapinski will begin the season as the third-ranked doubles team in all of Division II.
  • Additionally, the duo also holds down the top ranking in the Central Region. 
  • Individually, Engelbrecht is ranked fouth in the region and 28th in the nation.
  • Czapinski also joins the region's top-10 list at No. 9 in women's singles.
  • Washburn was picked fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

Scouting the Opposition ...
Oklahoma Baptist Lady Bison

  • Oklahoma Baptist finished the 2017-18 season with a record of 15-5 and was a perfect 6-0 in Great American Conference matches. The team reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
  • OBU won the 2018 GAC regular season and tournament championship titles and was tabbed to defend the title in the 2019 preseason coaches poll.
  • A fellow Central Region team, the Lady Bison are ranked ninth in the region.
  • Jason Proctor is in his first season as the head coach for both the men's and women's teams at OBU.
  • The Lady Bison are 0-1 after suffering a 5-2 loss in their opening match of the 2019 season to Metropolitan State University of Denver.
  • The Ichabods and Lady Bison have only faced twice, but OBU has won both matches.

'Bods and Ends …

  • Logan Morrissey won her 50th career doubles match against Cameron.
  • The Washburn men's and women's teams defeated Drury on Feb. 3, the first time both Washburn teams have done so since their first-ever meeting in 1997.
  • The victory over Drury snapped a seven match losing streak for the women's team.

Coach Lance Lysaught …

  • is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Washburn men's and women's tennis teams.
  • has never coached a match against Cameron.
  • has coached the Washburn women to a 37-44 overall record and is 16-22 in MIAA matches.
  • led the Ichabod men to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal round in 2018, the first time the program had ever advanced beyond the national round of 16.
  • was tabbed to start up the men's and women's tennis programs at Ottawa University in 2012 where he was the head coach for two seasons.
  • is a former Washburn student-athlete who played tennis for the Ichabods from 1987-91.
  • was a two-time District 10 singles champion and an NAIA national qualifier in both singles and doubles over his tenure as a player.
