No. 5 Washburn set for midday match at Emporia State

First Serve … 

  • The No. 5-ranked Washburn women's tennis team (13-1, 4-0 MIAA) is set to travel to Emporia, Kan., for the 55th all-time meeting against the Emporia State Hornets on Sunday, March 31st.
  • The match is scheduled to begin at noon at the Emporia High School tennis courts.


Last Time Out …

  • The Ichabods went 2-0 last weekend with wins over No. 26 Augustana (W, 5-2) and Missouri Western (W, 6-1).
  • Against Augustana (13-2), the dual match started with a highly contested doubles competition, with two of the three matches decided by a tiebreaker.
  • Jacqueline Engelbrecht and Svea Crohn blanked their opponents for a quick 6-0 victory on the second court.
  • At No. 3, Kinsey Fields and Maria Soler Valverde powered through a 7-6 (7-1) win to claim the doubles point for Washburn.
  • In the singles competition, the Vikings won two of the first three matches to tie up the dual 2-2.
  • Washburn finished strong and won the final three singles matches to complete the 5-2 victory.
  • On March 24, Washburn swept the doubles competition and dropped just one singles match in the win over Missouri Western (8-8, 0-3 MIAA).
  • All three Ichabod doubles teams posted their 10th regular season victory.
  • In singles, Czapinski, Morrissey, Soler Valverde, Crohn, and Madison Lysaught all added victories to their season win column.


Scouting the Opposition …

Emporia State Hornets

  • After winning just one match last season and going 1-12 (0-9 MIAA), the Hornets are off to a 6-4 (3-1 MIAA) start for the 2018-19 season.
  • The Hornets are coming off a 4-2 loss to Augustana (S.D.).
  • Marko Goles Babic is the interim coach for the men's and women's tennis teams after serving as the graduate assistant coach last season.
  • The Ichabods lead the all-time series with the Hornets, 33-21, and have won the previous two meetings.


Ichabods in the Rankings …

  • Washburn moved up three places in the latest ITA national rankings to No. 5 in Division II.
  • Three Ichabods moved up in the rankings and are all in the top-45.
  • Czapinski went from No. 10 to fourth in women's singles.
  • Also ranked in singles, Engelbrecht checks in at No. 28 and Soler Valverde is No. .
  • In doubles, Czapinski and Morrissey are ranked fourth in the nation.
  • As a team, the Ichabods are ranked No. 6 in the Central Region.
  • Czapinski/Morrissey hold down the top doubles ranking in the Central Region. 
  • Individually, Engelbrecht is ranked fouth in the region and 28th in the nation.
  • Czapinski also joins the region's top-10 list at No. 9 in women's singles.
  • Washburn was picked fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.


'Bods and ends …

  • Czapinski is still undefeated at No. 2 singles with a record of 14-0. Including the fall season, she is 18-2.
  • Soler Valverde is a perfect 9-0 when playing fourth in the order and has the second-most wins on the team at 16-4.
  • The Ichabods' eight match winning streak is their longest since the 2008-09 season, when Washburn won 12 in a row.
  • Washburn is 13-0 when winning the doubles point.
  • Coach Lysaught notched his 50th win as the women's coach.
  • Washburn posted its 13th win on March 24, surpassing the win total from last season's 12-18 record.
  • The Ichabods have played the Hornets more than any other opponent in their 45 year history (54 times).
  • Washburn is 14-7 when playing at Emporia and this season the Ichabods are 7-0 when playing on the road.


Coach Lance Lysaught

  • is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Washburn men's and women's tennis teams.
  • is 3-1 when playing Emporia State.
  • has coached the Washburn women to a 50-45 overall record and is 18-22 in MIAA matches.
  • led the Ichabod men to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal round in 2018, the first time the program had ever advanced beyond the national round of 16.
  • was tabbed to start up the men's and women's tennis programs at Ottawa University in 2012 where he was the head coach for two seasons.
  • is a former Washburn student-athlete who played tennis for the Ichabods from 1987-91.
  • was a two-time District 10 singles champion and an NAIA national qualifier in both singles and doubles over his tenure as a player.
