TOPEKA, Kan. --- Timely hitting and a complete team effort saw Washburn Ichabod baseball (13-16, 7-12 MIAA) claim a 7-1 victory in the series opener on Friday at Falley Field.
Washburn out hit the Bearcats, 11-9, as six Ichabods recorded hits.
Wyatt Featherston went 3-for-4 at the plate for his first career three-hit day, while
Rorey Combs was 2-for-4 in the effort.
Brady Hoover also had a strong day at the plate, stretching his consecutive game hit streak to 10 while notching his 11
th multi-hit game with a 3-for-5 outing.
Javis Larson,
Jake Hahn and
Mitchell Lady made up the balance with a hit apiece.
Lane Harvey scored the opening run of the afternoon with help from a
Steven Jacobson sacrifice fly in the first. Hoover then doubled to drove a run across during the fifth and eighth frames respectively. In the sixth Washburn created some breathing with a four-run inning as Combs drove two across and scored an unearned tally with Jacobson scoring earlier in the stanza.
Bailey Jenkins and
Jared Sharp each made one inning relief appearances, while starter
Josh Ramirez (3-3) put together a strong performance, tossing seven scoreless innings with six hits. In addition to earning credit for the win, Ramirez's performance also allowed him to became just the eighth pitcher in program-history to throw 200 career innings and first since
Brett Ash accomplished the feat in 2013.
The Bearcats evaded the shutout as they tallied their lone run in the eighth.
Washburn and Southwest Baptist resume the series at Falley Field on Saturday with game two, first pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.
