NOTES | Baseball host Northeastern State in final regular season series

With postseason hopes still on the line, Washburn baseball (22-21, 13-17 MIAA) will close the regular season with Northeastern State as it hosts three-game set. The series is scheduled to open at Falley Field on Friday at 6 pm before continuing with a 3 pm first pitch on Saturday. The series will then wrap up on Sunday with the regular season finale slated for 12 pm, with senior day recognition taking place beforehand.

THE SERIES
» The Ichabods trail the all-time series, 14-8. Washburn was swept in three games last on the road last season, but took all three from the Riverhawks at Falley Field in 2017.

POSTSEASON SCENARIO 
In order for Washburn to qualify for the MIAA Tournament:
» The Ichabods need to win three games against Northeastern State
» Potential eight-seed Northwest Missouri needs to loss three games at Emporia State.

A LOOK AT NORTHEASTERN STATE
The Riverhawks open the series at 12-34 on the year and are 11th in the MIAA standings at 9-21. Northeastern State is coming off a series loss at home to Emporia State last weekend that saw it take the opener, 10-2, before falling, 13-8 and 9-6. The offense is hitting .261  with 37 home runs, while pitching staff has a combined 7.04 ERA with 346 strikeouts in 385.0 innings. 

THIEVES!
Washburn began the weekend topping the MIAA chart with 89 steals and were listed 28th on the NCAA Division II chart. The Ichabods have converted .774 (89-of-115) steal attempts. Javis Larson has a team-best 19 steals. Xavier De Leon, Wyatt Featherston, Steven Jacobson and Rorey Combs follow with 10 steals each. 

ON THE MOUND
The Ichabod pitching staff has a combined 4.88 ERA with 328 strikeouts in 365.1 innings. The staff averages 8.1 strikeouts per nine, which is eighth-best among the MIAA.
» Josh Ramirez is 4-4 in 13 starts with a 4.27 ERA in a career-best 78.0 innings and is among the NCAA Top 100 in strikeouts (71st, 77).
» Jacob Head is 3-4 in 12 starts, while posting a 5.34 ERA with career-high in innings pitched (64.0) and strikeouts (48). 
» Nathan Lorenzen is 2-1 with two saves in 16 appearances with a 4.25 ERA in 29.2 innings.
» Bailey Jenkins is 1-1 in nine appearances. Since making the transition from the infield to the bullpen, Jenkins has collected 12 strikeouts in 10.2 innings.

YARD WORK
» Washburn's 28 home runs is tied for ninth among the MIAA leaderboard and is 17th among team single-season records.
» The Ichabods began the season with a home run in four consecutive games en route to tallying 10 during their opening seven games of the season. 
» Eight of the 28 home runs have come from the lead off spot. 
» In the last four seasons, Washburn has homered a combined 93 times including 69 in 2016.
» Brady Hoover is tied for third among league leaders with 11 home runs.

OFFENSIVE CONTRIBUTIONS
The Ichabods have received offensive support form their entire lineup:
» 17 different players have scored at least one run, with 11 scoring at least 10 times.
» 12 players have at least five RBI, with nine Ichabods registering 10 or more.
» 15 players have doubles Brady Hoover leading the way with 12 as well as a team-best 46 RBI. Lane Harvey and Peter Shearer trail with 12 doubles each, while Javis Larson and Rorey Combs  follow with 11 and 10, respectively.
» De Leon is hitting .302 (49-162) with seven doubles and a team-high 37 runs scored.
» For the 17th time in the last 20 seasons, Washburn baseball has multiple batters with 50 or more hits in the season. The 2019 Ichabods currently have Larson (55) and Hoover (52) as representatives, with De Leon (49) and Harvey (40) in ear shot to join, and would be the first quartet to record 50-hits since 2015. Since the turn of century, the Ichabods have had four seasons with five or more batters reaching 50-hits in a single-season.

IN APRIL...
» Washburn was 10-7 overall and 7-7 against the conference.
» Washburn outscored opponents, 128-89 on an average of 11.4 hits per games.
» Washburn hit .322 (194-603), a 59-point rise from its .263 (123-467) average in March.
» Washburn pitchers had a combined 4.76 ERA, surrendering 155 hits in 147.1 innings.

ICHABODS AT HOME
» The 2019 campaign marks the 30th season Washburn Baseball has called Falley Field home, since opening prior to the 1990 season. 
» Washburn are 5-3 at Falley Field in 2019.
» The home opener against Baker on March 26 was the latest recorded home opener since 1991. 
» The Ichabods are 45-38 at Falley Field, dating back to 2015.

UNDER DOUGLAS
Fifth-year head coach Harley Douglas is the fifth head coach in the program's 67 seasons. Douglas is 105-98 in his last four seasons which includes back-to-back seasons with over 30-plus wins. The first former player to take the helm, Douglas played four seasons (1997-2000) for predecessor Steve Anson before a stint with the New York Mets system and a three-year term as Anson's top assistant. 

#PROBODS UPDATE
Former Ichabod slugger Riley Krane (2014-17) is set for his second full season in the Frontier League in 2019 with last season league champions, Joliet Slammers. In 123 professional games, Krane is hitting a .248 for his career with eight dingers and 52 RBI. The Slammers are scheduled to open their season at home on Thursday, May 9 when they host Krane's former club, Windy City Thunder Bolts.

'BODS IN THE BIGS
Washburn baseball has been home to many talented alumni with some being able to take their talents to Major League Baseball. To date, their have been six former Ichabods who have played a regular-season or playoff game for an MLB club including George Darrow, Rick DeHart, Jerad Head, Davey Lopes, Jerry Robertson and Steve Simpson. Additionally, six Ichabods have been chosen in the MLB Amateur Draft with catcher David Gauntt being selected most recently by the Miami Marlins in 2016 (Round 18). 

UP NEXT
If the Ichabods qualify for the MIAA postseason, they will open tournament play on Thursday, May 9 at Al Ortolanni Field in Pittsburg, Kan.
