LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Washburn baseball team fell in the first game of four against the Regis Rangers, 10-2, on Friday afternoon. Washburn will continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Lawrence High School starting at 11:30 a.m. The second game will be a seven inning contest beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Washburn (6-7) starter
Brock Gilliam retired the first six batters in order while striking out four. He allowed a leadoff single in the third, but the Ranger runner made a wide turn towards second and Gilliam went to cover first in time to receive the throw from
Parker Dunn in right field to catch the runner. Gilliam returned to the mound and recorded two more quick outs.
The Rangers (3-4) scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning following two hits and a stolen base. Regis opened the game wide open in the fifth with five runs, capitalizing on three Washburn errors while adding three hits to go up 6-0.
Regis added two more runs in the seventh and eighth innings to go up, 10-0.
The Ichabods had runners in scoring position in every inning except fifth and seventh. Washburn got on the board in the eighth frame after starting off with back-to-back walks. A double play still moved
Cole Emerson up to third and a passed ball allowed him to score.
Washburn added one final run in the bottom of the ninth. Three singles in a row starting with
Cale Hlavac followed by
Brett Ingram and
Eric Hinostroza loaded the bases.
Chance Ragsdale hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Hlavac to make the score, 10-2.
Wanner was 2-for-3 with a double and a single. Hinostroza was 2-for-4 with two singles and a walk. Gilliam went five innings and gave up six runs, one earned, on six hits and struck out six.
