Baseball sweeps doubleheader against Regis

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Washburn baseball's offense came alive on Saturday as the Ichabods took both games of the doubleheader against Regis. Washburn improves to 8-7 on the year while Regis drops to 3-6. The Ichabods will play the series finale at Falley Field tomorrow (Feb. 23) at noon for their first true home game of the season.

Game 1 - Washburn 9, Regis 7
Mark Wanner got the offense going in the bottom of the second inning with a leadoff double to right field. Brett Ingram worked a seven pitch walk to put runners on first and second. Up next was Wyatt Featherston who loaded the bases with a single through the left side. Kros Bay followed that up by hitting a fielder's choice to score Wanner from third and give Washburn a 1-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Jacob Head cruised through his innings and retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings.

The Ichabods added some insurance runs in the fifth with four runs on five hits. The frame started with back-to-back singles and then a walk to Xavier De Leon loaded the bases with no outs. Eric Hinostroza singled up the middle to score Mitchell Lady and Bay while De Leon advanced to third. Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli cranked the first pitch he saw out to right field for a double. Hinostroza was able to score on a ground ball and Clark-Chiapparelli moved up to third. Parker Dunn made it a 5-0 game with a single through the right side.

In the bottom of the sixth, Washburn hit two singles, a double, drew a walk, and was hit by a pitch to score three runs before Regis recorded an out. Lady scored the fourth run of the inning on a ground out to extend Washburn's lead to 9-0.

The Rangers responded with four runs of their own in the seventh and then added three more in the eighth to cut Washburn's lead to 9-7. Skyler Proctor came on in the ninth inning and the Ichabods sealed the win on a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

Head threw six scoreless innings and gave up just three hits and walked one while striking out nine for the second-consecutive game. He has won all four games he has started this season. Proctor picked up his first save of the year, allowing no runs, no hits, with just one walk.

Offensively, both teams finished with 11 hits each. Ingram went 2-for-3 with a walk and one run scored. Bay also had two hits and finished 2-for-4 and scored two runs and drove in two more. Behind the dish, Bay threw out two runners. Hinostroza had one hit, scored one run, and knocked in three.

Game 2 - Washburn 6, Regis 2
The second game was a seven inning contest and Washburn got two runs in a hurry in the bottom of the first off Ingram's first collegiate home run hit to deep center field. Hinsotroza scored on the long ball as he was walked on four-straight pitches just before Ingram's at bat.

Joe Roecker struck out the side in the second inning and then the first two batters of the third before completing the 1-2-3 inning on a pop out.

Hinostroza drew another walk in the third inning with two outs. He reached third on a single by Ingram and then scored on a throwing error to make it a 3-0 lead for Washburn.

Regis got the run back in the top of the fourth with a solo homer.

To start the home half of the fourth, Wanner hit a single to center field and then scored on a two-run bomb by Carson Sader extend the lead to 5-1. The Ichabods added one final run in the fifth after the bases filled up on three walks and a fourth walk drawn by Sader scored Featherston.

Clark-Chiapparelli came on in relief in the sixth and retired the side in order. A single and a double by the Rangers to start the seventh put the score at 6-2. A fly out, strike out, and a pop out ended the inning and game with two runners stranded on base.
