Baseball falls to Northwestern Oklahoma State

ALVA, Okla. -- The Washburn baseball team fell in the final game of the Ranger Roundup to host team Northwestern Oklahoma State, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon. The Ichabods are now 5-3 on the year while the Rangers check in at 2-5.

Washburn starter Jared Sharp cruised through a quick 1-2-3 inning in the first, but ran into some trouble in the second. Two walks, a single, and an error gave the Rangers the first run of the game with one out. The second and third outs of the inning came when catcher Kros Bay threw out runners attempting to steal second, but a single in between the throw outs put Northwestern Oklahoma up, 2-0.

The Ichabods cut the deficit in half in the top of the third inning when Mitchell Lady used his speed to score from second base on an infield single by Eric Hinostroza.

The 2-1 score didn't stand for long as Northwestern Oklahoma answered with three runs on five hits in the home half of the third to go up 5-1. The Rangers tacked on another run in the fifth.

Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli singled in to lead off the fourth, but Washburn didn't get another baserunner until the seventh inning. Peter Shearer led off the inning with a walk and Wyatt Featherston hit a two-out single up the middle to put runners on the corners. Lady landed a single deep enough to score both runners to trim NWOSU's lead down to 6-3. Xavier De Leon hit the third-straight Washburn single of the inning to advance Lady to third, but a ground out ended the inning.

Parker Dunn led off the eighth with a single and advanced his way around the bases to third with two ground outs, but he was left stranded there for the Ichabods' final baserunner of the day as they went down in order in the ninth to end the game.

The Ichabods finished with seven hits with one from seven different players. Lady was a part of all the Washburn scoring today as he drove in two runs and scored once. Behind the dish, Bay threw out three runners attempting to steal second base.

On the mound, Sharp went three innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out two. Brandon Gabler and Dalton Huggins came on in relief with Gabler throwing two innings and allowing one run while Huggins pitched three scoreless innings.

Washburn will complete its 12-game road swing to open the year next week in Joplin, Mo., at the MAA/GLVC/NSIC. The Ichabods will take on St. Cloud State on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. on the campus of Missouri Southern.
