Ichabods open MIAA Tournament with Griffon rematch

OPENING TIP
> The Washburn Ichabods will start the postseason with the same team who they ended the regular season with as the Ichabods will face Missouri Western in the MIAA Postseason Tournament Quarterfinals on Friday in Kansas City at 6 p.m. in historic Municipal Auditorium.
> The Ichabods (16-12) were topped by the Girffons on Feb. 29 in St. Joseph when the Griffons won 94-80.
> The Ichabods have clinched a spot in the MIAA Tournament and currently sit fifth in the MIAA standings with Saturday's game remaining in the regular season. Missouri Western is one game ahead of the Ichabods at 12-6 in the conference standings. An Ichabod win over the Griffons on Saturday would mean the teams would play again in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament with the Ichabods being the four seed and the Griffons gaining the fifth seed. The top 10 teams in the final standings will be in Kansas City March 4-8 for the postseason event.
>  The Ichabods are 38-22 all-time in the MIAA Championship Tournament.
>  The Ichabods are 2-2 in first round games (when the tournament was 12 teams) … 19-6 in the quarterfinals, 12-7 in the semifinals and 5-7 in championship games.
>  In games played in Kansas City, the Ichabods are 16-12.
>  Against the Griffons, the Ichabods are 3-5 all-time and they have not met in the tournament since a March 1, 2016 playin game in which the Girffons topped the Ichabods 70-54 in Topeka.
>  In Kansas City, the Ichabods and the Griffons have not played since March 6, 2010 in the MIAA Semifinals when the Ichabods won 56-43.
>  The Ichabods are the MIAA Tournament No. 5 seed in this year's event …it marks the first time Washburn has been the No. 5 seed in the conference postseason touranment.
 
ICHABOD NOTES
> Tyler Geiman leads the Ichabods in scoring at 15.4 ppg as well as assists (5.5) and minutes (35.3) and he is second in rebounds (5.8).
> Geiman has 149 3-pointers in his Washburn career … he is 10th on the all-time 3-point chart.
> Geiman's 390 career assists at Washburn and is second all-time on the Ichabod chart … the Ichabod all-time leader is Jordan Canfield (1992-97) who had 756, which is second on the MIAA career chart.
>  Jalen Lewis is scoring 13.0 ppg while Drew Maschoff is scoring 10.4 ppg and Jonny Clausing is scoring 10.1 ppg.
>  Clausing leads the team in rebounds at 7.1 rpg (fourth in the MIAA) … he also leads the team in blocks at 1.6 per game.
> Keven Biggs is scoring 5.8 ppg off the bench after starting the first 12 games of the season.
> Rathen Carter is scoring 5.4 ppg with 2.2 rpg … he scored a career-high 18 points against Central Missouri in the first meeting.
> Tyler Nelson is scoring 5.6 ppg coming off a career-high 16 points against Central Missouri and Jace Williams is scoring 4.5 and Connor Deffebaugh is scoring 4.6.
> Tyler Geiman is third in the MIAA in assists (5.6 apg) and is third in the MIAA in minutes per game at 35.2 and is 12th in scoring while ranking 10th in rebounds, ninth in field goal percentage, fourth in 3-point field goal percentage, 16th in free throw percentage, 18th in steals and seventh in 3-pointers made per game.

Coaching wins through year 3
>  Brett Ballard has 62 wins in his first three seasons as the Ichabod head coach … he needs one win to tie and two to pass former Ichabod head coach Bob Chipman who had 63 wins in his first three seasons on the Washburn bench. Glenn Cafer recorded 52 wins in his first three seasons at Washburn.

WASHBURN ICHABOD HEAD COACH BRETT BALLARD
>  is 62-30 in his third season as the Ichabods' head coach and 95-60 overall in his fifth year as a head coach.
>  has led the Ichabods to two NCAA postseason appearances in both seasons at Washburn.
>  was named the Washburn Ichabod men's basketball head coach on April 6, 2017 after spending the 2014-15 to 2016-17 seasons as an assistant coach with the Wake Forest basketball program after working under head coach Danny Manning 2014-17 seasons and at the University of Tulsa during the 2012-14 seasons.
>  he helped Wake Forest to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2009-10 season following the 2016-17 season.
>  while at Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane played in the postseason both years, including earning a No. 13 seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Tulsa also participated in the 2013 CBI, finishing that season with a winning record of 17-16 overall.
>  before joining Manning at Tulsa, Ballard spent two seasons as the head basketball coach at Baker University going 33-30 overall, including a 21-12 mark in his final season at the helm in 2011-12.

>   in 2017-18, Wicks helped lead Northern State to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season and postseason championships this year. Northern State also claimed the central region championship en route to the program's first-ever appearance in the national championship game.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Washburn ran into a second half hot-shooting Missouri Western Griffon squad as the Ichabods fell 94-80 in their regular season finale on Saturday afternoon. Washburn finishes the regular season at 16-12.
The Ichabods trailed at the half 36-35, but the Griffons used a 21-8 jumpstart over the first six minutes of the frame taking a 57-43 lead as Missouri Western hit 8 of 12 shots including 4 of 6 shots from deep while the Ichabods wee 4 of 11 during the same stretch. The Ichabods trailed by as many as 20 on two separate occasions before cutting the lead back to 14 to end the game.
Washburn had a 15-7 lead just under five minutes into the game but the Ichabods were outscored by the Griffons 21-11 over the next 10:26 going hitting 4 of 9 3-pointers taking the lead for good at 28-26.
Tyler Geiman led the Ichabods with 22 points tying for the team lead with six rebounds. Jalen Lewis scored 18 and Jonny Clausing scored 15 with six rebounds and two blocks and a team-high three assists. Tyler Nelson scored 13 and Connor Deffebaugh had 10 each off the bench.
Missouri Western scored 20 points off Washburn's 13 turnovers and outrebounded the Ichabods 36-33. The Griffons hit 16 of 29 3-point attempts as Tyus Millhollin hit 10 of 15 tries scoring a game-high 34 points.
Washburn finished 30 of 58 from the field while the Griffons were 33 of 65 shooting 59 percent in the second half.
 
ABOUT MISSOURI WESTERN
> The Griffons are 17-13 this season and 13-6 in conference play.
> Missouri Western is 12-1 in home games and 1-3 in games played at the Civic Arena in St. Joseph.
> Tyrell Carroll leads the Griffons in scoring at 17.5 ppg and in assists at 5.9 per game … in MIAA play is he averaging 17.8 ppg and 5.6 apg.
