Washburn Soccer Defended Yager Once Again
The Washburn soccer team continues to not be defeated at home as they went 1-0-1 this past week making them now 4-0-2 at home. The Ichabods will be on the road this week against Newman.

Scouting Newman
» The Jets in the last three years have been a great team and a tough one in the conference racking up a record of 26-16-14 (17-12-10). Newman, with a young roster, this year have had a tough time. They are coming of their first win looking to turn the season around.
Offensive Production
» The Jets scored one of their six goals in their first win and shutout against Missouri SouthernÂ
» Newman only needed to shoot six time and four on target to get a goal in the net
» However, the Jets have been shutout themselves five times this season
Defense Has Been the Problem
» The Jets have lost by 2 goals or more in four games this season
» The defensive unit has given up 19 goals compared to their offense scoring six
» When the offense put up two goals against a tough Central Oklahoma team the defense also let up two leading to a tie
» Defense did however step up last week against No. 17 Central Missouri and Missouri Southern
» In the game against the Jennies they allowed just 1 goal which happened in overtime. A team that has scored 31 goals this season (2nd in the conference, top 25 in the nation)
» The Jets allowed just 9 shots for their first shutout of the season against Missouri Southern

Sophomore Midfielder Makenzie Shay
»  Shay leads the team in goals (2), points (4) and shots-on-goal (8)
»  Shay was the lone goal in Newman's only win of the season
» She has taken more shots since conference play began with 10 of her 12 shots coming in the last five game.
Senior Midfielder Ashley Talley
»  Talley is one of six senior on the offensive side. Her experience and leadership can help on the defensive and offensive side of the ball
»  Talley does lead the team in shots taken with 13. She also has a goal this season in a huge tie against Central Oklahoma
Senior Forward Makenna Schmal
»  So far this season, Schmal has no goals on ten shots. However seven of those shots are on goal.
»  She will be needed for this young offense down the stretch
Senior Defender Jordan Ashworth
»  Ashworth is currently leading a defense that held No. 17 Central Missouri to one goal in overtime and shutout Missouri Southern
»  She leads the team in minutes played with 926 and has started all 10 games. Only five girls have started all 10 games which includes the keeper
Senior Keeper Jackie Lari
»  Lari has made 62 saves and currently has a 1.83 GAA ans 0.765 SV%. Her 5.50 saves per game are second in the conference
About the Coach
»  Entering his second year coaching the Jets
»  Holmes is a native of Wichita and played at Newman
»  in his four years at Newman, Holmes was a 1st-team All-District 10 selection. He also earned 2 National NAIA Player of the Weeks and finished his career with 45 goals and 35 assists while leading the team to their first District 10 championship in 1988
»  He started his coaching career volunteering at several youth clubs in Wichita before coaching women's soccer at Maize HS
»  He led the Eagles to 12 AVCTL league championships, 11 consecutive regional, quarterfinal and state tournament appearances. Holmes was named AVCTL Coach of the Year nine times and was named the 2014 Kansas Large HS Coach of the Year
»  In 2012, Holmes took over the men's team at Maize, leading the team to one AVCTL championship, one regional championship and a state quarterfinal appearance

Scouting Central Oklahoma
» The Bronchos are always a tough out in the MIAA under coach Mike Cook. Central Oklahoma in the last three years have a 44-10-4 record overall and a 21-6 record in conference including a 22-2 year in 2018. Once again in 2021, the Bronchos are near the top of the standing with a 8-3-1 (4-1) record.
Tough Road Ahead
» The Bronchos currently sit 4-1 in the conference after starting conference play with four straight wins. They earned their first loss on Sunday against No. 17 Central Missouri.
» There next four opponents include three of the top five in the MIAA with No. 3 Emporia State next
Slow Start
» In their first conference lost to No. 17 Central Missouri, the Bronchos were down 2-0 early (after 22 minutes)
»  They cut the Jennies lead in the second half but would later give up the hat trick to Kassie Newsom

Sophomore Midfielder Monika McGee
» McGee has scored eight goals this season which is the most on the team. She also leads in points (16), shots (34), shots-on-goal (18), and game-winning goals (4)
»  Her four game-winning goals leads the conference and 5th in the nation
»  Before the Central Missouri game, McGee had at least one goal in five straight games
Freshman Defender Kassidy Collins
» Even as a defender, Collins has the second most goals on the team with five and has assisted on two goals as wellÂ
» She has taken the third most shots with 27
» Collins is apart of a defense that has shutout six teams
Freshman Midfielder Madison Linavong
» Linavong is the Broncos top shot creator with four assist on the season but also contributes in scoring as she has two goals on 28 shots and tied with McGee with 18 shots on goal
Freshman Defender Lindsay Gordon
»  Gordon leads a defense that has six shutouts and allowed 87 shots in 12 games
»  Gordon won MIAA Defensive Player of the Week on October 5th for her role in two road wins against Fort Hays and Nebraska-Kearney. The defense allowed 10 shots in two games including just one against the Lopers
About the Coach
»  Head Coach Mike Cook started coaching for the Broncos when the school started the program in 1998 and built them into a perennial NCAA D2 contender
»  He has led the Bronchos to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, six regular-season titles and five tournament crowns during their tenure in the Lone Star Conference. Cook earned LSC Coach of the Year six times and named Midwest Regional Coach of the Year twice
»  Cook won hist first MIAA regular season and postseason tournaments titles in 2018 and was named MIAA Coach of the Year and Central Region Coach of the Year. He followed that up with a 2nd MIAA postseason championship in 2019.
»  Cook ranks among the all-time leaders in wins and winning percentage (.731)
»  He's coached 64 players to all-conference selections a combined 116 times, 45 players to all-region honors a combined 79 times, and 10 players to All-American status a combined 11 times.
