Box Score Wichita, Kan. – Ichabods win a nail biter in the final minute of overtime as they defeat the Newman Jets 1-0. Washburn soccer moves to 7-3-2 on the season and an above .500 conference record (3-2-2).
The Ichabods' offense started hot from the opening kickoff taking the ball just outside the eighteen before being fouled.
Tera Lynch was a few inches from scoring the games first goal in less than a minute into the match. However, the ball hit the left post and out. From there the offense was still aggressive but simmered down. In a game that saw a total of 28 shots, 17 from Washburn and 11 from Newman, each team took just two in the first 20 minutes including the Lynch free kick. By the end of the first half, the Jets outshot the Ichabods seven to five with three coming in the last three minutes of the half.
Ichabods keeper
Raegan Wells made her impact known in the first half saving all four shots on target. She tallied a total of seven saves and zero goals allowed for her third shutout of the season.
The game got even quieter in the second half. As the intensity of the game increased, both teams got more aggressive. Newman and Washburn both received yellow cards in the half. The defenses remained strong allowing five shots or less to their opponent. Once again defenders
Carlee Thompson and
Emily Michaelis played all 110 minutes letting up their second lowest shot total of the season with 11 and no goals.
The score staying at 0-0 led the game into extra time. The Ichabods defense not only held the Jets offense to one total shot in almost 20 minutes of extra time, but the offense also dominated. Washburn despite tying in two games this season did not let up. Washburn shot seven times, three in the first period and four in the second.
As time was waning down in the second overtime period, Lynch chips the ball to Viviana Soto-Herrara who slices it between Newman defenders to
Khloe Schuckman. Schuckman makes a move to the center of the eighteen and drills it into the right net for the win with 40 second left to spare. Schuckman shot four times with two on-goal but it's the one at the end that mattered the most. Lynch also moved into sole possession of second in assists in Washburn history.
The Ichabods stay on the road to face Central Oklahoma on Sunday, October 17 at 1 p.m.
