Washburn stays on the road Saturday at Newman

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn women's basketball team remains on the road for a game against Newman on Saturday afternoon in Wichita.

OPENING TIP

>> On defense, Nuria Barrientos leads the team with 10 blocks and has averages 4.5 rpg. She had seven rebounds and three blocks for the second time this season at Central Oklahoma

>> Mackenzie Gamble has hit 16 triples on 47 attempts (43 percent)

DEFENSIVE EFFORT

>> Washburn is fourth in the MIAA for point per game allowed with 62.6 ppg.

>> The Ichabods also allow the second-lowest field goal percentage to their opponents. Their opponents shoot at an average of 38.1 percent. Nebraska-Kearney is the only team that allows a lower percentage at 34 percent.

>> WU allowed 40 percent shooting or less in six of their eight games including allowing just 27.6 percent against Oklahoma Baptist.

>> Washburn's 31 blocks are third in the MIAA. The eight blocks against Central Oklahoma are the most by the Ichabods since having eight against Lincoln on Jan. 19, 2021.

MINUTE-BY-MINUTE

>> In last game at Central Oklahoma, Barrientos and Cassaday played a season-high in minutes. 

>> Barrientos, in the first four game, played 15.5 mpg. In the last four games she has played 22 mpg. She has delivered for 28 points on 9-of-28 shooting (.321)

>> Cassaday consistently gets about 24.4 minutes a game but against Central Oklahoma she played a career-game high 35 minutes. In that span she tallied 10 points, shooting 5-of-8 and grabbing eight boards.

>> Dewey, in the first four games, averaged 10.5 mpg. In the last four, she got her first start and averages 22.8 mpg. In those four games, Dewey has scored 27 points, shooting 9-of-21 (.429) and has 12 rebounds and 2 steals.

MILESTONE TRACKER

>> Bentley needs 12 more points to hit 1,300 in her career and is also 23 away from moving up to No. 11 all-time on Washburn's scorers list.

>> Barrientos is two points away from collecting 300 in her time as an Ichabod.

LAST TIME OUT

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn women's basketball team fell 69-58 on the road to Central Oklahoma on Thursday, Dec. 9. 

Washburn (1-7, 0-3 MIAA) jumped out to a 22-19 advantage at the end of the first quarter after shooting 4-of-5 beyond the arc. Washburn looked to continue their success from three in the second half when Mackenzie Gamble hit her third of the game. The Bronchos (6-3, 2-1 MIAA) responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead at five minutes remaining in the half. Central Oklahoma didn't slow down as they held the 39-32 lead into the break.

Both teams started the third quarter cold as neither team scored for the first three and a half minutes of the quarter. The Bronchos ended the drought with a layup. Hunter Bentley ended the quarter with a three, but the Bronchos kept the seven-point lead going into the final frame.

Bentley got the first Ichabod points in the fourth quarter off a layup. Aubree Dewey drained a triple to pull the Ichabods with four, 58-54, with 5:21 remaining in the game. However, Bronchos ended the game with a 7-0 run for the win.

Washburn had a 36.1 field goal percentage on the night while Central Oklahoma shot 40.0 percent while taking almost the same number of shots. The Ichabods made eight triples and the Bronchos hit 7-of-15 attempts from deep. A difference in the game was the Bronchos scoring 30 points in the paint compared to the Ichabods' 18. Washburn had 41 rebounds including 14 offensive boards and eight blocks.

Bentley scored 16 points, shooting 6-for-14 from the floor with two three pointers. Lauren Cassaday led the Ichabods with eight rebounds, including six offensive boards. Cassaday also chipped in 10 points. Nuria Barrientos contributed on the defensive end with three blocks and two steals.

Four Bronchos finished in double-figures, led by Kelsey Johnson's 15 points and 10 rebounds. 

ABOUT THE NEWMAN JETS

>> The Jets went 4-18 in the conference-only 2020-21 season and ended their season with a 69-61 loss at Pittsburg State.

>> NU is 2-7 to start the new season. The Jets started 0-4 then won two before going on a three-game losing streak.

>> The Jets score 63.3 ppg and shoot about 41 percent from the field.

>> Newman is led by Tiffany Dortland who averages 11.1 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3.1 apg and second on the team with 14 steals.

>> Dortland also has the most triples with 17 at the highest percent of 37 percent.

>> Faith Mason-Vestal also also averages double-digits with 10.1 ppg along with a team-leading 5.9 rpg and 10 blocks.

>> Amoni White has tallied 15 steals, 17 rebounds, and 16 assists.

>> Britney Ho is a presence on the glass with 46 rebounds and averages 9.3 ppg, shooting 54.5 percent

>> Carissa Beck is a threat from deep, going 12-of-35 for 34.3 percent.

LAST MEETING WITH NEWMAN

Washburn 65, Newman 49 -- Jan. 28, 2021

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Washburn women's basketball team pulled away in the second half to capture a 65-49 victory at Newman on Thursday evening. With the win, the Ichabods move up to 6-6 on the season while the Jets drop to 3-10.

The game got off to a slow start for both teams as the Ichabods held a 4-3 lead midway through the first quarter. Newman hit a free throw at the 4:46 mark to even the score at 4-all, but Washburn closed out the frame on a 10-2 scoring run to lead 14-6.

Trailing 16-8, the Jets hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to two with 5:12 left in the opening half. The two teams took turns exchanging buckets until Newman went on a 4-0 mini run to knot up the score at 22 at the 2:08 mark. Nuria Barrientos followed that up with a jumper, sparking a 6-0 run to close out the quarter and give the Ichabods a 28-22 at the break.

The Ichabods took control of the game in the third quarter as they outscored the Jets, 23-11, and hit 5-of-6 from deep. In the final 3:50 of the period, Washburn went on a 14-2 scoring run and poured in four triples from three different players.

Washburn carried a 51-33 lead into the fourth and held a lead greater than 16 points for the remainder of the game. Katie Glatczak drained the ninth and final Washburn three-pointer of the night with 5:03 left in the game and Kambree Rhodes closed out the scoring for the Ichabods with back-to-back jumpers.

Washburn finished the contest shooting 41.9 percent while Newman had a 35.8 field goal percentage. The Ichabods were 9-of-28 (32.1 percent) from behind the arc and the Jets made 5-of-18 (27.8 percent). Washburn dominated on the glass, out-rebounding Newman, 42-31. 

All 16 available Ichabods played in the game. Barrientos recorded her fifth double-double of the season as she did a little bit of everything for the Ichabods. She grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds to go with 11 points, seven assists, and two blocks. Hunter Bentley also added 11 points and was 3-for-7 from behind the arc. Mackenzie Gamble, Abby Oliver, Macy Doebele, and Aubree Dewey all chipped in eight points. 

Faith Mason-Vestal was the only Jet to finish in double-figures as she totaled 12 on the night.

>> Brette (Ulsaker) Herber begins her ninth season on the Ichabod bench as an assistant coach. Herber played for McHenry for three seasons (2007-10) and was named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.

>> Erika (Lane) Yoder starts her third season as an assistant coach for Washburn. She also played for McHenry from 2014 to 2017 and was a two-time all-MIAA selection.
