Ichabods and RiverHawks set for Monday matinee

OPENING TIP
•The Washburn Ichabods will wrap up the fall semester schedule of games hosting Northeastern State on Monday at 2 p.m. in Lee Arena in an afternoon contest.
•The Ichabods (6-5, 3-2 MIAA) topped Rogers State on Saturday night in Lee Arena in a 70-69 win over the Hillcats.
•The RiverHawks are 6-4 this season and 1-3 in the MIAA after falling at Emporia State on Saturday night in an 89-61 loss to the Hornets.
•The Ichabods lead the all-time series with Northeastern State 10-7 and have won the last eight in the series.
•Washburn is 6-2 in games played in Topeka winning the last four including an 88-73 win in the last meeting in Lee Arena on Feb. 23, 2021.
•The last win by the RiverHawks over the Ichabods came on Feb. 17, 2016 in a 70-67 win in Topeka.
•The 2021-22 season marks the 117th season of Ichabod basketball.
•Washburn was picked second both the MIAA Coaches and Media preseason polls.

ICHABOD BITS
•Jalen Lewis leads the team in scoring at 15.4 ppg hitting 24 of 63 3-pointers and will play in his 100th career game at Washburn against Northeastern State.
•Michael Keegan is scoring 11.4 ppg with team-highs of 6.3 rebounds per game, 1.1 blocks per game and 1.5 steals per game … he is averaging 11.4 ppg and 8.8 rpg in MIAA play.
•Connor Deffebaugh is scoring 9.5 ppg with 2.6 rpg and has raised his scoring to 10.8 ppg in conference play.
•Jeremy Harrell is fourth on the team in scoring at 8.4 ppg in 16.5 minutes per game coming off a career-high 20 points against Rogers State last time out.
•Levi Braun scoring 7.2 ppg and 9.8 ppg in MIAA play and has hit 11 of 23 3-point field goals in conference play.
•Since returning prior to the Central Oklahoma game, Tyler Geiman is averaging 7.5 ppg with 4.5 apg and 5.5 rpg playing 35 minutes a game.
•Through 11 games this season the Ichabods have used six different starting line ups … only Michael Keegan and Jalen Lewis have started all of the games so far this season.
•Tyler Geiman became the 26th member of Washburn's 1,000-point club at Missouri Western last season and returned to the line up at Central Oklahoma … his career point total is 1,422 in 119 career games, which is ninth all-time on the Ichabod chart … next on the chart is Dan Buie who scored 1,484 in two seasons from 1995-97 … Geiman's 209 career 3-pointers is fifth all-time at Washburn.
•Jalen Lewis is currently 16th on the Ichabod all-time scoring chart with 1,185 career points in 99 career games … Lewis also became only the sixth Ichabod to go over the 200 made 3-pointers mark now sitting with 221 which ranks second behind all-time leader Shannon Kruger who hit 242 in 122 games.
•On top of his career-high 20 points against Rogers State, Jeremy Harrell added a career-high seven rebounds.
•The Ichabods improved to 76-75 all-time in games decided by one point in the win over Rogers State.
 
COACHES
WASHBURN ICHABOD HEAD COACH BRETT BALLARD
•is 88-43 in his fifth season as the Ichabods' head coach and 121-73 overall in his eighth year as a head coach.
•has led the Ichabods to three NCAA postseason appearances in four full seasons at Washburn.
•was named the Washburn Ichabod men's basketball head coach on April 6, 2017 after spending the 2014-15 to 2016-17 seasons as an assistant coach with the Wake Forest basketball program after working under head coach Danny Manning 2014-17 seasons and at the University of Tulsa during the 2012-14 seasons.
•he helped Wake Forest to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2009-10 season following the 2016-17 season.
•while at Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane played in the postseason both years, including earning a No. 13 seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Tulsa also participated in the 2013 CBI, finishing that season with a winning record of 17-16 overall.
•before joining Manning at Tulsa, Ballard spent two seasons as the head basketball coach at Baker University going 33-30 overall, including a 21-12 mark in his final season at the helm in 2011-12.
•prior to taking over the head coaching position at Baker, Ballard spent seven years on Bill Self's staff at Kansas, his alma mater.
•he played two years for the Jayhawks under head coach Roy Williams from 2000-02 after transferring from Hutchinson Community College in his hometown of Hutchinson, Kan. In his two seasons as a Jayhawk, the team reached the 2001 NCAA Sweet Sixteen and appeared in the 2002 NCAA Final Four in Atlanta.
•he earned his bachelor's degree in secondary education from Kansas in 2003 earning an Academic All-Big 12 selection as a senior for his efforts in the classroom.

NORTHEASTERN STATE HEAD COACH JA HAVENS
•is 11-20 in his second season as the RiverHawks' head coach and 142-94 in his ninth season overall as a head coach.
•Havens played at Northeastern State for two seasons (1996-98) under NSU Hall of Fame head coaches Ken Hayes and Larry Gipson.
•Havens previously coached at East Central University (Ada, Okla.) where he was head coach for seven seasons, carrying a record of 131-74, and was the fastest coach in ECU history to win 100 contests.
•He 0-3 against the Ichabods (0-1 at East Central).
 
ABOUT NORTHEASTERN STATE
•The RiverHawks are 6-4 overall and 1-3 in the MIAA after falling at Emporia State 89-61 on Saturday night in Emporia.
•The RiverHawks finished the game on a 24-5 run over the last eight minutes of the game after trailing 84-38 at one point.
•Emeka Obukwelu leads the team with 17.3 ppg and a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game.
•Christian Coook is scoring 16.0 ppg and Rashad Perkins is averaging 13.5 ppg.
•The RiverHawks are averaging 77.0 ppg allowing 70.4 ppg.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS
(Dec. 18, 2021) TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods held of Rogers State in a game of runs and with a series of lead changes down the stretch in a 70-69 win in Lee Arena on Saturday night in Topeka. 
Jalen Lewis broke a 64-64 tie with 2:27 to go putting Washburn (6-5, 3-2 MIAA) up with a 3-pointer, but Roger State's Devin Pullum connected on one of his own tying the score back at 67 with 1:58 to play. Following a Hillcat (6-4, 1-4 MIAA) timeout, Jeremy Harrell his a 3-pointer pushing the lead back to three with 92 seconds to play.
Rogers State scored on its next possession cutting the lead to 70-69 with 1:05 to play and the Ichabods came up empty on their next series. After a Rogers State turnover with 15 seconds left, the Ichabods missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Pullum's driving layup was missed and Michael Keegan pulled down his eighth rebound of the game as time expired to seal the win.
Washburn led 32-27 at the break and led by as many as 12 in the opening frame before the Hillcats trimmed the margin back to five entering the locker room.
Lewis led the Ichabods with 22 points scoring 15 in the second half hitting 3 of 6 3-pointers and Harrell scored a career-high 20 points on 7 of 14 shooting adding seven rebounds. Tyler Geiman had nine points with eight rebounds and six assists.
Pullum led the Hillcats with 23 points hitting all four 3-point attempts.
Washburn finished the game shooting 51 percent hitting 28 of 55 shots going 7 of 20 from deep and 7 of 11 free throws. Rogers State was 24 of 52 overall and hit 10 of 20 3-pointers and 11 of 17 free throws.
Washburn had a 33 to 27 advantage on the glass and a 34 to 20 margin in the paint.
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH NORTHEASTERN STATE
•Monday's meeting will be the 18th all-time between the two schools and the Ichabods lead 10-7.
•The Ichabods have won the last eight meetings in the series.
•The Ichabods and RiverHawks played in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with Washburn falling 64-59 on March 15, 2003 in Stephenville, Texas.
•The RiverHawks went on to win the NCAA National Championship in 2003.
•Washburn is 4-4 in games played in Tahlequah and the Ichabods are 6-2 in games played in Lee Arena and 0-1 in neutral site games (Stephenville, Texas - lost 64-59 in NCAA playoffs on March 15, 2003).

LAST MEETING WITH NORTHEASTERN STATE
(Feb 23, 2021) TOPEKA, Kan. – Behind a career-high 24 from Tyler Nelson and Washburn's first triple double in school history by Tyler Geiman, the No. 25-ranked Washburn Ichabods rolled to an 88-73 win over Northeastern State on Tuesday night in Lee Arena. 
The Ichabods jumped out to a 21-10 lead midway through the first half before an 11-0 run by the RiverHawks (4-16, 4-16 MIAA) tied the score at 21. An 11-3 run by the Ichabods pushed them back in front by eight at the under 5-minute media timeout, but after the RiverHawks came back to cut the margin for the Ichabod lead at five at 34-29, Washburn finished the half on a 14-3 run taking a 48-32 lead into the break.
The run continued coming out of the locker room with a 13-2 spurt stretching the run to a 27-5 outburst as Washburn led 61-34 with 15:19 to go and would eventually build the lead to as many as 29 with 7:35 to go cruising to the win.
Nelson scored 13 of his career-high 24 in the first half finishing 7 of 8 from the field and 5 of 5 from 3-point range hitting 5 of 6 free throws all in 30 minutes of play also adding two steals. At the break, Geiman had 12 points with 10 rebounds and five assists setting up the record-setting triple double finishing with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists with the final assist coming on a full-court length pass to a streaking Jalen Lewis for the 10th assist of the night. Connor Deffebaugh came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points and Lewis finished with 11.
Troy Locke led the RiverHawks with 20 points and Christian Cook scored 16 off the bench.
Washburn shot 49 percent for the game hitting 28 of 57 shots overall and 15 of 31 shots from deep. Northeastern was 25 of 62 overall and 9 of 28 from 3-point range.
Washburn and Northeastern State each had 35 rebounds.
 
ICHABOD BASKETBALL HISTORY
•The Ichabods are 1627-1102-2 all-time in the 117th year in the program's history.
•Washburn is the 10th-winningest program in NCAA Division II history by victories.
•Washburn is the winningest MIAA program since the 1989-90 season with an overall record of 645-299 since joining the conference and the NCAA.
•The Ichabods have recorded 29 20-win seasons and they have one 30-win seasons after going 35-4 during the 1986-87 NAIA Championship season.
• Washburn has won 21 conference championships including 10 MIAA titles.
• Washburn has received 15 NCAA Tournament bids going to three Elite Eight's appearing in the 2001 NCAA National Championship game.

• The Ichabods are 469-97 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena.
• The 2021-22 season marks the 38th season of play in Lee Arena.
• The Ichabods are 37-1 all-time in home openers.
• The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.

•The Ichabods will open the 2022 calendar season on New Year's Day with a roadtrip to Central Missouri on Jan. 1 in Warrensburg. Washburn will return home to face Northwest Missouri on Jan. 6 and Missouri Western on Jan. 8.
