Ichabods start off final week of regular season hosting RiverHawks Tuesday

OPENING TIP
•The No. 15 (NABC)/No. 13 (D2SIDA) Washburn Ichabods wrap up a three-game homestand with Northeastern State on Tuesday night in Lee Arena at 6 p.m.
•Washburn will then wrap up the last weekend of action at Missouri Southern on Thursday before finishing the regular season with Emporia State on Feb. 27.
•The Ichabods (14-5, 14-5 MIAA) are coming off an 88-85 overtime loss to No. 3/No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri on Saturday.
•The RiverHawks (4-15, 4-15 MIAA) have won their last two games after sweeping a home-and-home series with Central Oklahoma winning 84-72 in Edmond on Saturday and then topping the Bronchos again on Sunday in a 96-89 win.
•Tuesday's meeting between the Ichabods and the RiverHawks will be the 17th between the two schools with Washburn leading 9-7 having won the last seven meetings going 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
•The Ichabods are 4-4 in meetings in Tahlequah and 5-2 in meetings in Topeka and 9-5 in MIAA matchups overall.
•The Ichabods won the first meeting on Jan. 2 between the two schools 85-84 in overtime in Tahlequah.
•The Ichabods are ranked second in the league in opponents field goal percentage at 43 percent while the RiverHawks rank ninth in field goal percentage at 45 percent.
•The Ichabods lead the MIAA in scoring at 82.2 ppg while the RiverHawks are 14th in the league in points allowed at 81.0. NSU is averaging 74.6 ppg while the Ichabods are fifth in the league at scoring defense at 72.9 ppg.

•Tyler Geiman leads the team in scoring (21.0 ppg - 3rd in the MIAA), assists (6.1 apg - 1st in the MIAA and is 3rd in the NCAA), rebounds (6.3 rpg - 10th in the MIAA), steals (1.7 spg - 4th in the MIAA) and minutes (36.6 mpg - 2nd in the MIAA) … he also ranks eighth in the MIAA in field goal percentage (.532).
•Jalen Lewis is averaging 12.6 ppg hitting 46 of 93 3-point attempts this season (49.5 percent) … he is fifth in the MIAA in 3-pointers per game at 2.5 and third in percentage.
•Jonny Clausing returned to action at Central Missouri after missing the previous seven games with an injury …he is scoring 10.0 ppg with 4.0 rpg and 1.1 bkpg.
•Levi Braun is averaging 8.5 ppg this season … 49 of his 52 field goals this season have been from 3 and he has attempted only six shots inside the 3-point line … he is fourth in MIAA in 3-pointers per game at 2.7 and first in 3-point field goal percentage hitting 49 of 93 attempts (.538) … Braun's 49 3-pointers is fourth on the Ichabod freshman chart and his 91 attempts are fifth … the Ichabod freshman 3-point record is 58 set by Jalen Lewis during the 2018-19 season.
•Tyler Nelson is scoring 10.1 ppg averaging 11.4 points a game in the last 10 since moving into a starting role reaching double figures in five-straight games.
•Jace Williams is averaging 6.1 ppg with 4.5 rpg recording 18 blocks tallying his first career double double at Washburn with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Rogers State.
•Rathen Carter is scoring 5.2 ppg with 2.8 rpg.
•Connor Deffebaugh is scoring 5.1 ppg with 2.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.
•Will McKee is scoring 3.3 ppg with 4.3 rpg.
•Tyler Geiman became the 26th member of Washburn's 1,000-point club at Missouri Western … his career total is 1,244 in 107 career games, which is 12th all-time on the Ichabod chart … against Northwest Missouri he passed both Brady Skeens and Eric Carter … Kyle Wiggins is 11th with 1,258 career points..
•Jalen Lewis is currently 36th on the Ichabod all-time scoring chart with 893 points.
•Tyler Geiman became the first Ichabod to have at least 1,000 points, 500 assists, 500 rebounds and 100 steals going over that mark against Missouri Western … he became the 12th Ichabod to reach at least 1,000 points and 500 rebounds … he was the seventh Ichabod to reach at least 1,000 points and 100 steals … he was also the 10th Ichabod to reach at least 1,000 points and 200 assists and now the first Ichabod to reach at least 1,000 points and 500 assists in a career.
•Washburn is 58 of 86 from the free throw line in the last five minutes of games (67 percent) compared to its opponents connecting on 79 of 111 attempts (71 percent).
•The 2020-21 Washburn Ichabod basketball season will be one for the record books as the 22-game schedule will consist of only games against MIAA opponents as regional crossovers and non-conference matchups have been scrapped thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

COACHES
WASHBURN ICHABOD HEAD COACH BRETT BALLARD
•is 76-36 in his fourth season as the Ichabods' head coach and 109-66 overall in his seventh year as a head coach.
•has led the Ichabods to two NCAA postseason appearances in both seasons at Washburn.
•was named the Washburn Ichabod men's basketball head coach on April 6, 2017 after spending the 2014-15 to 2016-17 seasons as an assistant coach with the Wake Forest basketball program after working under head coach Danny Manning 2014-17 seasons and at the University of Tulsa during the 2012-14 seasons.
•he helped Wake Forest to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2009-10 season following the 2016-17 season.
•while at Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane played in the postseason both years, including earning a No. 13 seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Tulsa also participated in the 2013 CBI, finishing that season with a winning record of 17-16 overall.
•before joining Manning at Tulsa, Ballard spent two seasons as the head basketball coach at Baker University going 33-30 overall, including a 21-12 mark in his final season at the helm in 2011-12.
•prior to taking over the head coaching position at Baker, Ballard spent seven years on Bill Self's staff at Kansas, his alma mater.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS

TOPEKA, Kan. – For the second time in two meetings the No. 15 Ichabods and the No. 3 Northwest Missouri Bearcats needed an extra frame to decide a winner in a top-15 match up as Northwest Missouri topped the Ichabods 88-85 to split the regular season series. In a game that saw 17 lead changes and 15 ties, the Bearcats hit 9 of 10 free throws in the extra period to seal the win.
In the extra frame, Jalen Lewis matched a pair of free throws by Northwest tying the score at 74. Two more charity tosses by the Bearcats were then matched by a jumper by Tyler Geiman knotting the score at 76. Northwest hit a 3-pointer with 2:48 to go up 79-76 and after a free throw by Jace Williams, two more Bearcat free throws pushed the lead to four at 81-77 before Geiman hit a 3-pointer with 1:47 to go pulling the Ichabods back within one at 81-80.
The Bearcats hit back to back jumpers to go back in front five and a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left by Geiman cut the lead back to two. The Bearcats hit one of two free throws and Tyler Nelson connected on two to cut the lead to 86-85 with nine seconds to play and then after a pair of free throws by Northwest a 3-point attempt by the Ichabods from the corner rimmed out as the Bearcats held on for the win.
The Bearcats led 39-38 going into the halftime break after shooting 64 percent from the field while the Ichabods held serve hitting 63 percent of their shots. The score was tied at 72 going into the overtime as the Ichabods outscored the Bearcats 34-33 in the second half.
Geiman led the Ichabods with 20 points on 8 of 11 shooting hitting three 3-pointers with four assists. Nelson scored 18 points with three steals as did Jalen Lewis and Jonny Clausing scored 14 points off the bench hitting all seven field goal attempts.
Trevor Hudgins scored a game-high 28 points with six assists leading four Bearcats in double figures with Diego Bernard and Luke Waters each scoring 17 and Ryan Hawkins adding 16.
Both teams shot 57 percent for the game as the Ichabods were 31 of 54 and Northwest was 28 of 49. The Bearcats hit 22 of 29 free throw attempts while the Ichabods were 15 of 18. Washburn held a 25 to 23 advantage on the glass. Neither team led by more than six during the game and the scores were separated by no more than four in the second half. 
 
ABOUT NORTHEASTERN STATE
•The RiverHawks are 4-15 this season winning their last two games, both over Central Oklahoma, on Saturday and Sunday this week … the wins snapped an eight-game losing streak.
•Trey Sampson leads the team in scoring at 15.1 ppg and rebounds at 6.6 rpg. Troy Locke is scoring 12.9 ppg and Brad Davis is scoring 11.2 ppg.
•The RiverHawks are scoring 74.6 ppg while allowing 81.0 ppg.

SERIES HISTORY WITH NORTHEASTERN STATE
•Saturday's meeting will be the 17th all-time between the two schools and the Ichabods lead 9-7.
•The Ichabods have won the last seven meetings in the series.
•The Ichabods and RiverHawks played in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with Washburn falling 64-59 on March 15, 2003 in Stephenville, Texas.
•The RiverHawks went on to win the NCAA National Championship in 2003.
•Washburn is 4-4 in games played in Tahlequah and the Ichabods are 5-2 in games played in Lee Arena.
 
LAST MEETING WITH NORTHEASTERN STATE
Jan. 2, 2021 -- TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The No. 5-ranked Washburn Ichabods overcame a sluggish first half and 26 fouls rallying from a 12-point deficit in an 85-84 overtime win at Northeastern State.
With the Ichabods (7-0, 7-0 MIAA) trailing 55-43 with 11:15 to play in the game, Washburn's Tyler Geiman scored eight-straight points kicking off a 17-2 run pushing the Ichabods 60-57 with 7:18 to play. Northeastern (1-7, 1-7 MIAA) went back in front by four at 67-63 with 3:37 to play, but a 3-pointer by Levi Braun and a lay up by Jonny Clausing put the Ichabods back on top with 2:55 to play at 68-67.
After six-straight points by the RiverHawks pushing their lead to five at 73-68 with 1:13 to play, Geiman hit a jumper and Rathen Carter scored four points including a 3-pointer from the corner with 16 seconds left to give the Ichabods a 74-73 lead. NSU had a chance to take the lead with five seconds to play but hit only 1 of 2 free throws to sending the game into overtime.
In the extra frame, NSU scored first and Jace Williams tied the score with a jumper with 4:09 to play. After a jumper by the RiverHawks stretched its lead back to two at 78-76. Williams hit a pair of three throws with 2:13 to go and Geiman put the Ichabods up 80-78 with 1:44 remaining.
NSU hit a free throw to cut the lead to 80-79 and two free throws by Geiman with 33 seconds to play. A jumper by NSU cut the lead to one, then the Ichabods Jalen Lewis hit two free throws with 11 seconds to play and Tyler Nelson hit one free throw with 2 seconds to play as the Ichabods led 85-81. A 3-pointer at the buzzer cut the margin to one as the Ichabods remain perfect on the season.
The Ichabods trailed at the break for the first time this season 30-26 after struggling from the field going 10 of 30 overall and 1 of 9 from 3-point range while the RiverHawks were 10 of 25 from the field hitting 5 of 13 from deep. The Ichabods had a nine-point deficit at 22-13 and never led in the opening frame as Geiman scored 10 points to lead the Ichabods in the first half.
Behind Geiman's career-high 29 points (19 in the second half) followed by Clausing's 15 points. Geiman added a team-high nine rebounds adding six assists and three steals playing 43 minutes. Williams had nine points.
Brad Davis had a 22 points with eight assists to lead the RiverHawks.
Washburn finished 46 percent from the field hitting 29 of 63 overall for a 46 percent clip shooting 63 percent in the second half. Washburn was 20 of 30 from the free throw line hitting 7 of 8 in overtime. NSU was 19 of 22 from the free throw line in the second half and 25 of 33 for the game, but hit only 1 of 4 from the charity stripe in overtime.
Washburn was outrebounded 44 to 32. The teams combined for 50 fouls in the game with 26 being called on the Ichabods.
