TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods saw some Washburn history in the opening game of a twin bill with Fort Hays State while dropping the nightcap splitting an MIAA doubleheader with Fort Hays State winning the first game 2-0 before falling in the second game 4-0. The Ichabods will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. hosting Nebraska-Kearney. Between games, a special ceremony will take place with the dedication of Gahnstrom Field starting approximately 2:30 in on field festivities.
Game 1 – WU 2, FHSU 0
Jaycee Ginter tossed the first complete-game, seven-inning no hitter in a 2-0 win over Fort Hays State in the opener improving to 8-1 in the circle in the opening game while driving in the first run of the game in the first inning. The no-hitter was the first since Kelsie Novotny blanked Newman on Feb. 11, 2011.
Washburn jumped on the board in the bottom of the first when
Marrit Mead singled to left and then moved over on a sac bunt by
Hadley Kerschen. Mead came around to score on a double to right center putting Washburn on top 1-0.
Neither team would score until the fourth inning when the Ichabods'
Maddie Stipsits led off the inning with a single and then moved to second on a throwing error. After
Kimi Patterson singled down the left field line, Stipsits advanced to third and then scored on a Mead sac fly to center increasing the lead to 2-0.
Ginter needed only 86 pitches with 61 going for strikes for the win. She faced only one batter over the minimum at 22 giving up a walk while striking out two. Patterson had three hits while Mead finished with two hits while scoring one and driving in one while Kerschen, Ginter, and Stipsits each had one hit.
Game 2 – FHSU 4, WU 0
After a scoreless first three innings, the Tigers scored four runs in the top of the fourth taking a 4-0 lead over the Ichabods and it was all the run support Michaelanne Nelson would need as she improve to 5-6 in the circle with the 2-hit shutout.
Washburn's two hits in the game came in the first inning by Kerschen and in the seventh by
Ashton Friend, but in between Nelson retired 14 straight Ichabod batters.
Raegen Hamm took the loss falling to 9-2 on the season and
Ashlie Thissen pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief scattering five hits and striking out two.
