Ichabods pull out the brooms in a pair of wins over the Lopers

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team swept a doubleheader from Nebraska-Kearney taking the first game in eight innings in an 8-6 win while winning the nightcap 7-0. The Ichabods, who improved to 19-4 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA, will be back in action on Friday at Missouri Western at 5 p.m. before facing Northwest Missouri on Saturday starting at noon.
 
Game 1 – WU 7, UNK 6
The Ichabods rallied for an extra inning victory in the opener in a 7-6 win over the Lopers. In the eighth, the Ichabods worked their way out of a bases-loaded jam holding UNK scoreless and then scored one in the bottom of the eighth for the win. Marrit Mead led off the inning with a single and then moved to second on a stolen base moving to third on a ground out by Hadley Kerschen. Jaycee Ginter then singled down the first base line scoring Mead with the winning run.

Washburn scored first in the game with a pair of runs in the top of the first when Ashton Friend homered to left scoring Herschen who singled in the frame. Neither team would score until the Lopers scored four in the top of the fourth keyed by a three-run homer by Katie Gosker. 

In the fourth, Washburn got a run back when Mead doubled scoring Maddie Stipsits who reached on a fielder's choice and the Ichabods added another in the fifth when Brianna Fuchs drove in Friend with a ground out.

In the Loper half of the sixth inning, UNK went up 6-4 when Abbie Jo Gaube doubled putting the Lopers back in front.
Washburn tied the score with two runs in the seventh sending the game to extra frames as Ginter led off the inning with a double and scored on Friend's single.

Following a Bri Francis walk, Kimi Patterson hit a sac fly scoring Friend tying the game setting up the eighth inning heroics.

Mead and Ginter each had three hits and Friend scored three runs while driving in three. Ginter improved to 9-1 in the circle tossing 134 pitches striking out four. 
Overall the Ichabods had 12 hits while the Lopers had five.
 
Game 2 – WU 7, UNK 0
The Ichabods scored first in the second inning when Kimi Patterson executed a perfect hit and run scoring Fuchs from first base with a double to right center putting the Ichabods up 1-0. The Ichabods added another run in the third when Ginter's ground out scoring Mead after she singled earlier in the frame as the Ichabods would go up 2-0.

The Ichabods added to their lead in the fourth when Mead crushed a home run into the pine trees scoring Jenna Moore who reached on an infield single.

In the top of the fifth, the Lopers moved runners to second and third with no outs but came up empty as the Ichabods led 4-0 leading to the bottom of the inning.

Francis hits a 2-out homer to dead center field stretching the Ichabod lead to 5-0 entering the sixth inning. Washburn added to its lead when Mead connected on her second two-run homer of the game scoring Paige Robbins who walked in the inning as the Ichabods went up 7-0.

Mead led the Ichabods with three hits scoring three times and driving in four with her two home runs pacing the nine-hit Washburn attack as seven different Ichabods had at least one hit.

Reagan Hamm moved to 10-3 this season in the circle striking out five scattering four hits in the complete game shutout.
