Ichabods ground Jets in doubleheader sweep

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods held off a late charge by the Newman Jets and rolled to a victory in the night cap as they took the opener 5-4 before winning the second game 10-1 in five innings on Sunday afternoon at Gahnstrom Field. The Ichabods will be back in action on Monday at 3 p.m. hosting Lincoln in a game that has been moved up a day because of the weather forecast.

Game 1 – WU 5, Newman 4
The Ichabods scored all five of their runs in the second inning as starved off a seventh inning rally by the Jets as Newman cut the lead to 5-4 but would get no closer in the one-run win in the opener.

All of Washburn's runs came with two outs as Kimi Patterson hit a homer to center and then after a double by Paige Robbins and a single by Brianna Fuchs, Merritt Mead sent both home with a double to left center. Hadley Kerschen then singled and then scored on a single by Ashton Friend as the Ichabods sent 10 to the plate.

The Ichabods were limited to a double by Bri Francis in the fifth and a single by Mead in the sixth.

In the seventh, the Jets led off the inning with four doubles in a row before a sac fly, a ground out and a strike out would end the game.

Mead, Kerschen and Francis each had two hits and Mead drove in two. Reagan Hamm struck out three in the game improving to 11-4 in the circle.

Game 2 – WU 11, Newman 1 (5 innings)
The Ichabods scored in all four at bats and drew a school-record 10 walks in the 11-1 win over the Jets. Washburn (21-6, 7-3 MIAA) scored four in the first as Mead led off the game with a home run to center. After a walk by Kerschen, Ashton Friend reached on an error and then Jaycee Ginter's single to left scored Kerschen and then Paige Robbin's 2-RBI single to right center scored both Friend and Ginter staking the Ichabods to a 4-0 lead.

Washburn came back with three more in the second inning as Mead, Friend and Ginter each walked and then Kamryn Garvie drew a bases-loaded walk. Patterson drove in two more runs with a single down the left field line as Washburn went up 7-0 after two innings.

In the third, Mead led off the inning with her second home run of the day and after Francis reached on a fielder's choice, Ginter connected on a 2-run shot to right center as the Ichabods went up 10-0.

Washburn finished off its scoring with an unearned run in the fourth taking advantage of one of the Jets' (6-27, 4-18 MIAA) three errors. Newman scored its only run in the top of the seventh ending the shutout bid by Ginter who lifted her record to 10-2 striking out four scattering six hits in the game.

Mead finished with three hits driving in two and scored four runs. Ginter and Robbins each had two hits and Ginter drove in three.
