TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team wrapped up its six-games over three days weekend with a doubleheader sweep over Lincoln improving to 23-6 overall and 9-3 in the MIAA. Game 1 – WU 9, Lincoln 3
The Ichabods jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after
Marrit Mead led off the game with a single and after moving over on a sac bunt by
Hadley Kerschen would come around to score on
Ashton Friend's fifth home run of the season. After a double by
Bri Francis she would score on an RBI single up the middle by
Kamryn Garvie.
Washburn added a solo run in the second inning after
Brianna Fuchs singled and then scored on an RBI single by Friend staking the Ichabods to a 4-0 lead.
Neither team would score until the fifth as the Blue Tigers (6-31-1, 3-21 MIAA) added two in the frame. Washburn broke the game open with five in the sixth inning on a grand slam by
Jaycee Ginter scoring Mead, Kerschen and Francis.
Lincoln added a single run in the seventh to wrap up the scoring as the Ichabods took the opener.
Mead, Friend, Garvie and Fuchs led the Ichabods with two hits each as Washburn finished with 12 in the first game. Ginter drove in four and Friend had five.
Raegen Hamm struck out four picking up the win scattering three hits in four innings improving to 12-4 in the circle and
Ashlie Thissen tossed three innings in relief for her first save of the season.
Game 2 – WU 4, Lincoln 2
For the second-straight game, Mead reached on a single and after stealing her 18
th and 19
th bases of the season, she would score on Friend's sac fly to right field as the Ichabods jumped out to the 1-0 lead. Washburn added another run in the third on Friend's single scoring Mead who reached on a double to right.
Washburn went up 3-0 after taking advantage of a Lincoln error on a single to left by
Maddie Stipsits scoring
Kimi Patterson who singled earlier. The Blue Tigers got on the board in the fifth inning with a home run and then added an unearned in the sixth.
Washburn returned serve with a run of its own when Patterson hit one off of the scoreboard with an insurance run as the Ichabods picked up their second-consecutive sweep in the 4-2 win.
Ginter improved to 11-2 in the win striking out four and Hamm recorded her second save of the season after entering the game with bases loaded and one out in the sixth inning and pitching a scoreless seventh striking out two.
Mead and Friend each had two hits and Friend drove in two.
