The Washburn soccer tem, under fifth-year head coach Davy Phillips, opens the 2021 campaign inside Yager Stadium at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2 when it hosts the visiting William Jewell Cardinals

Kicking Off 2021 At Home

Washburn in 2019 went 4-3-1 at home, overall the program is a little under .500 with a record of 64-67-19. While under Coach Phillips the team has done just as well at home as on the road with a record of 11-13-2 for both.

Ichabods have lost 10 of their last 12 season openers dating back to their 2008 season

Ichabods in Season Openers

Washburn has never faced William Jewellin a season opener

2019 in Review

Head Coach Phillips led the Ichabods to a 7-10-1 overall record and 3-7-1 conference record in his fourth season in 2019

Tera Lynch earned Third-Team All-MIAA honors. Her teammates Emily Michaelis and Raegan Wells both earned All-MIAA Honorable Mentions

Scouting William Jewell

The William Jewell Cardinals of the GLVC Conference went 3-13-2 overall in 2019 and all 3 wins were against conference opponents

The Cardinals have played under .500 soccer since 2013 when they went 10-8-1 overall and clinched a GLVC Championship Tournament berth for the second consecutive year and just 2 years after transitioning to the NCAA Division 2

Stand-out Players

Jayme Coone, 2019's 2nd leading scorer, is returning.

In 2019, she compiled 2 goals and 4 points

Kansas City Kansas CC transfer. Corrine Hughes, is a huge addition for a team who struggled to score and lost their top 2 goal scorers from 2019.

Hughes played in 2020 under the NJCAA season which was pushed back to the spring. In 2020, she led KCKCC to an appearance at the NJCAA National Tournament, a 15-3 overall record, and a KJCCC Championship.

Earned 2020 First-Team All-Conference

Starting Goalkeeper, Kaylie Kappelmann returns between the pipes

Kappelmann started 17 oftheir 18 games in goal. She led the GLVC and ranked fifth in NCAA-II with 134 saves which set a record for the Cardinals

Notes and Headlines Game 2
Washburn Soccer Opening Weekend Faces Off Against NSIC No. 2 Augustana

The Washburn soccer tem, begins the 2021 opening weekend game 2 inside Yager Stadium at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5 when it hosts the visiting Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conferences No. 2 ranked Augustana University.

Plenty of Returning Players

Washburn returns 9 players from their 2019 squad, including three time All-MIAA Third Team Tera Lynch

Sophomore goalkeeper Raegan Wells returns after setting the record for most saves as a freshman with 117 and placing fifth on the all-time career records in saves at Washburn

Incoming Players

Washburn adds 14 players playing their first season, which includes Taylor Bockover whose sister, Whitney, started 33 games for the Ichobods. Also includes two from England and three transfers

Another family connection, Raegan Wells' sister Riley is coming from Lincoln Southwest High School

A few of the girls joined the team in 2020 but the fall season was cancelled due to COVID-19

Scouting Augustana

The Augustana Vikings of the NSIC Conference went 16-5-1 overall in 2019 and 12-2-1 in the conference placing them second behind Concordia-St. Paul

The Vikings looking for their 8th straight winning season, the teams last losing season was back in 2012

In 2019, Augustana lost in the second round of the NCAA Central Region bracket for the third consecutive year and losing to Minnesota State for the second consecutive year

Stand-out Players

Sylvia Fehr, Alexis Legg, and Morgan Keirstead 2019's 2nd leading goal scorers, return

Fehr, Legg and Keirstead all recorded five goals for the Vikings in 2019. Fehr was second on the team with 14 points, Legg was fourth with 12 and Keirstead was sixth with 11. All three girls will look to fill the role of Vikings top offensive player Grace Behm who is top five all-time in games played (83) and tied-seventh in goals (16)

Alexis Legg already has stacked up 11 goals in a season back in 2018 (t-fifth all-time) and is tenth in career points

Senior Meghan Kuntz will need to fill Claudia Pueschner's shoes

Claudia Puechner is sixth in the program's history in saves with 265. She started all 21 games in 2019 and racked up 123 saves

Kuntz appeared in 5 games that season and saved 11 shots - shutout three ofthe five halves she played. As the most experienced on the roster she will likely get the start this season

Bailey Parsons can help first-year starter in goal

Parsons played in all 22 games, starting in 21 of those games. She looks to the lead another stellar defense as the Vikings allowed only 11 goals last season and help Kuntz in goal
