Washburn Soccer Back on the Road
The Washburn soccer team opens the 2021 campaign with a 5-1-1 record and a 1-0 conference record. The Ichabods continues conference play against Northwest Missouri.

Milestone Tracker ...
- Tera Lynch needs two more assists to move into second on the Washburn's all-time assist list behind Jessica Mainz (24). It will also make Lynch just the second player in Washburn's history to record 20 assists
- Lynch is nearing second on the Washburn's all-time shots on-goal list, needing three more shots on-goal.
- Khloe Schuckman is one goal away this season from tying fourth for most goals by a freshman in Washburn history. Schuckman is two goals away from tying for second.
MIAA AOTW
- Junior defender, Jaedyn Johnson earned MIAA Defensive Player of the Week for her play against Fort Hays and Nebraska-Kearney
- Johnson scored a goal on five shots with three being on target in two games. Her goal extended the Ichabods lead to three before the half against Nebraska-Kearney.
- Johnson played 166 minutes including all 110 minutes in a double-overtime tie to Fort Hays

Defense Holds Strong
- The offense has stepped up but it has been the defense that has kept the Ichabods in games
- When the opponent has scored one goal or less, the Ichabods are 5-0-1
- When the opponent scores more then two goals, the Ichabods are 0-1 (loss to Emporia State 1-2
Road Less Traveled
- The MIAA slate has always been a tough road and it will be the same this year.Â
- Only three teams in the conference have losing records
- The conference includes No. 6 Emporia State, No. 18 Central Missouri and a one loss Rogers State team
- Good news is those three teams are all home games for the Ichabods
Offensive Improvement
- In the 2019 season, Washburn scored 22 goals and averaged 1.22 goals per game and 11.8 shots per game
- This year, Washburn in just seven games already has 15 goals and are averaging 2.14 goals per game and 9.7 shots per game
- The team is taking less shots, however, they are more accurate as they have a 0.691 SOG% compared to a 0.580 SOG% in 2019
- The six goals scored against Nebraska-Kearney are the most scored by the Ichabods since 2012 when they scored 7 against the same Lopers
Non-Conference is Over
- Washburn went 4-1-1 in non-conference play continuing a now five year streak of 4+ wins in conference play
- Washburn is 45-56-15 all-time in non-conference games.
- It has been conference play that has hurt the Ichabods. Washburn in those same five years are 17-25-3 in conference games.

Scouting Northwest Missouri
The Bearcats have slowly improving each year under Coach Mark Gordon since he was hired in the winter of 2017. In his first year, the team went 2-15; then in 2019, Northwest Missouri went 6-10-3; and now starting this season 4-3-1. In their first conference game they tied No. 19 Central Missouri with a score of 2-2.
End of Home Stretch
- These next two games for the Bearcats ends a five game home stand
- In the first three games, Northwest Missouri went 2-0-1 making them 3-1-1 at home this season
- Next two homes games are against a one loss Washburn team and No. 6 Emporia State
Bounce Back
- Two weeks ago, Northwest Missouri traveled to then No. 18 Central Missouri and got blown out 3-0
- In the first game, UCM shot 25 times compared to the Bearcats' 14
- A week later at home, the Bearcats forced a 2-2 tie
- In the second game, the Bearcat scored first and held the Jennies without points for 67 minutes
Defensive Issue
- While the offense has done its job, scoring 16 times this season, the defense has allowed 15 goals to their opponents.
- The Bearcats opponents have a slightly better SOG% at 0.574% compared to the Bearcats 0.537%
Assist Me
- The Bearcat are ranked No. 1 in the MIAA in assists per game and assists . Northwest Missouri averages 1.75 assists per game and has 14 assists.
Standout Players
Sophomore Forward Teagan Blackburn
- Blackburn leads the team with six goals which is also second in the conference behind Emporia State's Mackenzie Dimarco (9)
- Her 13 total points also leads the team and is third in the conference
- She has played in all eight games but has only started in three of them, playing the ninth most minutes on the team
- Blackburn also is responsible for three game-winning goals which is first in the conference and 11th nationally
Sophomore Forward Kaylie Rock
- Rock is second on the team with three goals (one game-winning) and eight points on a team leading 30 shots with 15 on-target.Â
- Rock can also create shots as she has two assists on the season
Redshirt Freshman Sophie Cissell
- Cissell has yet to score a goal however she leads the team in assist with four. Her 0.50 assist per game is second in the conference behind Kassie Newsom at Central Missouri.
- She leads the charge for a team that leads the conference in assist per game (1.75)
Junior Goalkeeper Grace Goetsch
- All three Bearcat keepers have gotten playing time, Goetsch has been seeing the field more of late and its been earned
- While she didn't play at all last game against Central Missouri, she played at least a half in the three games prior and started two of those games. In her three games played and 180 minutes, Goetsch allowed a goal in each game and saved 13 shots
- She is 2-0 in her two starts including all 90 minutes against Missouri Western
About the Coach
- • Marc Gordon was hired on December 14, 2017, as the third soccer coach in Northwest history
- • Has put together a mark of 8-25-3 (5-15-2 MIAA) at Northwest entering the fall 2021 season
- • Increased goal scoring from nine goals in 2018 to 31 in 2019
- • Secured Northwest's third ever MIAA Tournament appearance in 2019 - first since 2012
- • Compiled a 113-38-15 record in eight seasons at Ottawa University
- • Won three KCAC regular season titles and four tournament titles
- • Qualified for the NAIA Final Tournament site twice in 2016 and 2017
- • Started soccer programs at Holy Names University and Bethany College

Scouting Missouri Western
The Griffons starting their season 4-2-2 in the second year under Damian Macias. In Coach Macias' first season, the Griffons went 4-11-3. Already hitting their win total from 2019.
Home is Where the Heart is
- Missouri Western has a 3-1 record at home. They started the season winning two games hosting the Stoney Creek Hotel Classic
- After starting 2-0, the Griffons went on the round for four games winning just one game
- Missouri Western now on a four game home stand played well against two tough opponents. In the game against then No. 19 Central Missouri, the Griffons lost a tight 3-2 game. Then squeaked out a overtime win against Missouri Southern
- The next two homes games are against No. 6 Emporia State and one-loss Washburn
Tough Stretch
- This week, the Griffons played No. 6 Emporia State and the 5-1-1 Washburn Ichabods
- Next week, Missouri Western heads on the road to Fort Hays who have been a tough out this year
Fouled Out
- Fouls are an issue for Missouri Western this season. The Griffons have committed 95 fouls along with nine yellow cards
- However, the number of fouls in losses/ties is about the same in their wins. In fact, the Griffons have committed one more foul in wins (48) compared to their losses/ties (47)
- Missouri Western have received six yellow cards in losses or ties
Penalty Kicks
- On penalty kicks, the Griffons are a perfect one for one. Lauren Street scored on the only attempt against Missouri Southern
- On the other side, Missouri Western opponents are zero for two when it comes to penalty kicks. Goalkeeper Anna Mayer saved both of them including last week against No. 18 Central Missouri
Standout Players
Junior Forward Kaili Campbell
- Campbell leads the team in goals (4), points (9), shots (25) and shots on-goal (15)
- She scored a hat trick in the second game of teh season against Rockhurst in 81 minutes. She earned MIAA Offensive Player of the Week
- Her goal in their last game against Missouri Southern gave the Griffons the lead in the 99th minute
Senior Forward Eszter Toth
- Toth is playing great soccer of late has she has a goal in each of the last two games
- On the season, Toth has three goals on 20 shots with 10 of them being on-target
Senior Midfielder Lillian Davis
- As a midfielder, Davis does everything and does it well
- While playing the most minutes on the team (746) other than the goalkeeper, Davis scored one goal on seven shots.
- She also has helped a defense contain offenses to 10 goals in eight games
- Junior Goalkeeper Anna Mayer
- Mayer played and started in all eight games including two shutouts
- She has faced 99 shots while saving 42 and allowing 10 goals for a 1.16 GAA and 0.808 SV%. She is ranked second in the MIAA in saves
About the Coach
- Head Coach Damian Macias is entering his first fall soccer season
- Spent three years as an assistant coach at the University of North Dakota then elevated to associate head coach in 2019
- During his coaching tenure at North Dakota, the Fighting Hawks posted their three most successful seasons as a D1 member
- Coaching experience spans more than two decades at multiple levels -Â high school, club, and all three NCAA divisions
