TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn (11-4-2, 6-3-1 MIAA) secured a senior day shutout victory over No. 22 Fort Hays State (9-1-7, 4-1-5 MIAA) on Friday evening, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season with a 1-0 win.
Washburn's four seniors, Emily Michaelis, Jaedyn Johnson, Carlee Thompson and Alyssa Kubick were recognized for their contributions to the program on the field before their final game at Yager Stadium.
After falling to Fort Hays State on the road 1-0 earlier in the season the Ichabods played a nearly identical match just reversing the roles.
The game was quiet offensively for both teams for the first 20 minutes until in the 20th minute Viviana Soto-Herrara gave a pass to Khloe Schuckman who was able to get a one-on-one with the goalie and sunk the shot into the left corner of the net, taking a 1-0 lead.
Washburn's defense against the Tigers was strong, holding them to only three shots in the first 45 minutes, only one going on target. Emily Michaelis, Carlee Thompson, Taylor Bockover and Lakin Rold all played a full 90 minutes in defense, assisting in the shutout effort.
The Ichabods were more active on offense, taking six shots in the first half and 11 overall, with six going on-target. Schuckman led Washburn with four shots, with two on goal. Haley Rogers took three shots off the bench while Belle Kennedy had two on-target attempts.
In the second half, the Tigers were held without a shot for 30 minutes before taking two in the final five minutes attempting a comeback. Raegan Wells only needed to make three saves in her 90 minutes in goal, recording her seventh solo shutout of the season.
Isabel Robben played all 90 minutes in goal for Fort Hays State, coming away with five saves. Hannah Mares took five shots for the Tigers, with two going on goal. No other player had more than one attempt.
With the win, Washburn reaches 11 wins for the first time since 2009. Six MIAA wins is also the most in a season since 2016. The Ichabods also defeated a ranked opponent for the first time all season, with the last coming on 2021's senior day against Emporia State.
The goal from Schuckman in the first half was the 30th on the season for Washburn, their most since 2008. Schuckman has accounted for eight of those goals, giving her the second most in a season by a Washburn sophomore.
The Ichabods will finish the regular season against Emporia State on Sunday, Oct. 23 with a 2 p.m. kickoff.
