EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Ichabods (11-5-2, 6-4-1 MIAA) played a tied game with Emporia State (9-5-4, 7-1-3 MIAA) for 80 minutes on Sunday afternoon before surrendering two goals in the final 10 minutes to fall 2-0.
High wind speeds had a major impact on the game for both sides. In the first half, Washburn played with the wind, helping to lead to seven shots in the first 45 minutes of action, although only one was on target.
On the other end of the pitch, the Hornets were held to just five shots in the first half. After a scoreless first half, the directions swapped, and Emporia State's offense opened up and the Ichabods' was shut down.
The Hornets held Washburn without a shot attempt in the second half as they played into the wind. Emporia State took 10 shots in the second half, with four going on goal.
In the 80th minute, Mackenzie Dimarco got free on a pass from Haley Sparks and shot a ball into the top right corner of the net to break the scoreless tie. Four minutes later Sparks was able to score one herself, off an assist from Anna Burnett, on a pressing Washburn team.
Nothing would come from the Ichabods' aggressive attempts in the final five minutes as the game came to an end, 2-0.
For Washburn, Khloe Schuckman paced the offense with three shots, including the only one that was on goal. Belle Kennedy added two shots. Mackenzie Dimarco led the Hornets with five shot attempts, while Haley Sparks had three. Joanie Westcoat was the lone Emporia State player to have multiple shots on goal.
Raegan Wells played all 90 minutes in goal recording three saves. She finishes the regular season playing every minute of each game. Tori Bailey played all 90 minutes in goal for the Hornets, making one save.
With the loss, Washburn dropped out of contention to host a conference tournament game. Instead, the Ichabods finish in sixth place, with 19 total points and will take on the third seed Northwest Missouri State in the quarterfinals. The match will take place Sunday, Oct. 30 and is set to kickoff at 1 p.m.
