Ichabods off to Oklahoma to battle the Bison on Tuesday

OPENING TIP
• The Washburn Ichabod will continue their non-conference slate at Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday, Nov. 22 in Shawnee, Okla.
• The Ichabods are 2-2 this season coming off a 79-70 loss at William Jewell last time out on Saturday.
• Oklahoma Baptist is 1-2 this season with its lone win coming in a 78-67 win over Missouri Western on Nov. 17. The Bison fell in their last action 98-86 at Oral Roberts in an exhibition game.
• Oklahoma Baptist topped the Ichabods last season in Lee Arena 69-63 on Nov. 23.
• The Ichabods are coming off a 22-11 season recording the program's 30th 20-win season and the fourth under Ichabod head coach Brett Ballard in his five seasons.
• The Washburn Ichabod basketball reached their fourth NCAA postseason in five years under head coach Brett Ballard in 2022-23.
• The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team was tabbed fourth in both the MIAA Preseason Coaches and MIAA Preseason Media polls announced Oct. 11 by the conference at the annual Basketball Media Day held at the College Basketball Experience in Kansas City
• The 2022-23 season marks the 118th season of Ichabod basketball.

ICHABOD BITS
• Connor Deffebaugh leads two other Ichabods in double-figure scoring with 13.3 ppg and Andrew Orr is scoring 10.3 ppg. Deffebaugh also leads the team in assists with 5.3 per game.
• Levi Braun is scoring 8.8 ppg hitting 9 of 16  3-pointers this season collecting six steals in four games.
• Jarmell Johnson scoring 7.8 ppg scoring a career-high 14 against William Jewell two games ago.
• Jordan Vincent is scoring 7.5 ppg with 2.5 rpg and 2.5 apg. He is coming off his best game as an Ichabod scoring 12 points with five rebounds and six assists in 22 minutes against Rockhurst last time out.
• Michael Keegan is scoring 5.8 ppg with a team-high 6.8 rpg and seven total steals and seven total blocks. His seven blocks is tied for the MIAA lead.
• Brady Christiansen's 9.5 rpg is fourth in the MIAA adding 5.3 ppg.
 
COACHES
WASHBURN ICHABOD HEAD COACH BRETT BALLARD
• is 106-51 in his sixth season as the Ichabods' head coach and 139-81 overall in his eighth year as a head coach.
• has led the Ichabods to four NCAA postseason appearances in five full seasons at Washburn.
• was named the Washburn Ichabod men's basketball head coach on April 6, 2017 after spending the 2014-15 to 2016-17 seasons as an assistant coach with the Wake Forest and Tulsa basketball programs after working under head coach Danny Manning 2012-17 seasons.
• he helped Wake Forest to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2009-10 season following the 2016-17 season.
• prior to taking over the head coaching position at Baker, Ballard spent seven years on Bill Self's staff at Kansas, his alma mater.
• he played two years for the Jayhawks under head coach Roy Williams from 2000-02 after transferring from Hutchinson Community College in his hometown of Hutchinson, Kan. In his two seasons as a Jayhawk, the team reached the 2001 NCAA Sweet Sixteen and appeared in the 2002 NCAA Final Four in Atlanta.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA BAPTIST
• The Bison are 1-2 this season after topping Missouri Western on Nov. 17 in their home opener.
• The Bison dropped a 98-86 exhibition loss to Oral Roberts last time on Nov. 19.
• Paul King leads the team in scoring at 19.7 ppg with Trey Doomes scoring 17.3 ppg and D.J. Freeman scoring 11.0 ppg.
• The Bison are averaging 67.7 ppg while allowing 70.3 ppg in three contests.
 
LAST MEETING WITH OKLAHOMA BAPTIST
(Nov. 23, 2021)  TOPEKA, Kan. – Washburn junior guard Jalen Lewis' career-high 30 points was not enough as the Ichabods fell to Oklahoma Baptist 69-63 on Tuesday night in Lee Arena.
Lewis started out the game with a 3-pointer en route to a 4 of 8 performance from deep. Following Lewis' bucket, the Bison went on an 11-0 run as Jaquan Simms hit three 3-pointers in a 3:42 stretch pushing OBU up 11-3. With Washburn down 10 at 32-22 with 4:10 to play in the opening half, the Ichabods closed the frame on a 10-3 run sparked by nine points from Lewis to enter the locker room down 35-30.
In the second half, OBU scored the first six points of the half taking a 41-30 lead and went on to an 11-point advantage two more times before the Ichabods cut the margin to four at 51-47 with 8:09 to play.
OBU (2-2) went up by eight at 55-47 with 5:40 to go and a 6-2 run by the Ichabods cut the difference back to four again at 57-53 with 3:54 left. Washburn made one final push after trailing 65-55 with 1:11 to play after back-to-back 3-pointers by Lewis and Jeremy Harrell pulled Washburn to trailing 65-61 with 20 seconds to go, but OBU went 4 of 4 from the free throw line to hold on for the win.
Lewis led all scorers with 30 points going 13 of 20 from the field overall. Michael Keegan had 10 points and Harrell had eight. Jaden Monday led the Ichabods with six rebounds while dishing out four assists scoring six points.
Burke Putnam led OBU with 22 points.
Washburn was 26 of 66 from the field (8 of 36 from deep) and hit 3 of 4 free throw attempts.  OBU was 25 of 48 overall and hit 6 of 12 3-pointers and 13 of 15 free throws including 12 of 13 in the second half.
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH OKLAHOMA BAPTIST
• Tuesday's meeting will be the fifth all-time in the series with the Ichabods leading 3-1.
• Last year's meeting in Topeka was the first time the two teams met not on a neutral court with the previous three encounters being played away from their respective home stadiums.
• Washburn won 99-96 on Nov. 9, 2018 in Bethany, Oklahoma. Washburn also won 74-69 in Ottawa, Kan. on Dec. 28, 1960 and 35-18 on Dec. 18, 1938 in Oklahoma City.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS
(Nov. 19, 2022) KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabods never led falling in a non-conference contest at Rockhurst on Friday night falling 79-70.
The Ichabods trailed by 10 at the half trailing 37-27 after starting the game 4 of 12 from the field falling behind by as many as 13 at 31-18 with 5:15 to play in the frame.
With the Ichabods (2-2) trailing at 59-46 with 10:08 to go in the game, Washburn ripped off an 11-1 run over the next 3:13 cutting the lead to 60-55 with 7:11 to play. Rockhurst came back with an 8-2 run of its own pushing the lead back to 11 just before the final media timeout.
The Ichabods' Andrew Orr scored the third of his three straight baskets as Washburn pulled within 72-67 with 1:41 to play, but the Hawks hit a 3-pointer on their next possession and hit their final four free throws preserving the win.
Connor Deffebaugh has 17 points to lead the Ichabods adding four assists and Jordan Vincent had season bests of 12 points, six assists and five rebounds off the bench. Andrew Orr scored all 10 of his points in the second half.
Rockhurst was led by Jake Auer who had a career-high 20 points taking game-high honors.
Washburn finished 26 of 64 from the field and 7 of 26 from 3-point range hitting 11 of 17 free throws while Rockhurst was 26 of 57 from the field and 9 of 21 from deep and hit 18 of 23 free throws including 12 of 16 in the second half. Washburn was outrebounded 42 to 33 with 11 offensive rebounds turning into six points for the Hawks (2-2).

• The Ichabods are 1646-1110-2 all-time in the 118th year in the program's history.
• Washburn is the 10th-winningest program in NCAA Division II history by victories.
• Washburn is 662-306 since joining the conference and the NCAA.
• The Ichabods have recorded 30 20-win seasons and they have one 30-win seasons after going 35-4 during the 1986-87 NAIA Championship season.
• Washburn has won 21 conference championships including 10 MIAA titles.
• Washburn has received 16 NCAA Tournament bids going to three Elite Eight's appearing in the 2001 NCAA National Championship game.

UP NEXT
• Washburn is back at home on Nov. 26, the Saturday after Thanksgiving at 2 p.m. against Ottawa. On Monday, Nov. 28 the Ichabods will open MIAA play at Northeastern State and then face Emporia State on Dec. 3 at 3 p.m. in the conference home opener.
