TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Six different Ichabods hit a home run on Monday afternoon as Washburn baseball totaled seven homers for the second-straight game and captured a 19-15 victory in the series finale at Northeastern State. The Ichabods will travel back to Topeka and host Northwest Missouri on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
The RiverHawks (15-7, 5-4 MIAA) got on the board in their first at bat, scoring two runs on two hits and an error.
Washburn (16-6, 7-2 MIAA) got one run back in the second after
Zion Bowlin led off the frame with a home run to left field.
Northeastern State pushed its lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second after a bases loaded balk brought in a run.
In the following inning, the RiverHawks used the long ball to go up 8-1 after a two-run homer and then a three-run shot.
With one out in the fifth, Washburn loaded up the bases with a single, walk, and hit by pitch.
Brett Ingram plated a run with a sacrifice fly that allowed the other two runners to also advance up one base and then they scored on a two-RBI single by Bowlin to cut the deficit in half, 8-4.
The RiverHawks added on another run in the fifth with a solo homer to go up, 9-4.
The sixth frame got going with a leadoff home run to left by
Connor Scott. With one out,
Trevor McCollum reached on an error and then moved up to second on
Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli's two out single. The Ichabods then drew three-consecutive walks that brought in two runs.
Kros Bay stepped up to the plate to face the new NSU pitcher and on the first pitch, he sent the ball over the fence in left field for a grand slam to give Washburn its first lead of the contest, 11-9.
The seventh inning was filled with more home runs. McCollum went yard with a solo shot and after Clark-Chiapparelli reached first on an error with two outs,
Cal Watkins homered to right field. Ingram followed suit with a bomb to right center to make the score 15-9 in favor of WU.
Northeastern State put up four runs of its own in the home half of the seventh to pull within two, 15-13.
The Ichabods created some space with three runs in the eighth. Bay and
Quinn Waterbury were walked and McCollum drove in one run with a single to center. With two outs, Clark-Chiapparelli turned on the first pitch and singled to left to bring in two more runs.
Not giving up, the RiverHawks scored a pair of runs in the home half of the eighth to trim Washburn's lead to 18-15.
WU tacked one final run in the ninth on another solo home run by Bowlin. With that home run, Bowlin recorded his 100th career hit since joining Washburn in 2020.
Dalton Huggins closed out the ninth and left a runner stranded on second after recording the final out with a strikeout.
The Ichabods had 14 hits in the game and 13 of their 19 runs were scored with two outs. Bowlin finished the afternoon 3-5 at the plate with two home runs, five RBI, and three runs scored. Ingram, who hit his fourth home run in two games, recorded three RBI and scored twice. McCollum and Clark-Chiapparelli both had two hits, three runs scored, and two RBI.
Jake Schroeder earned his first collegiate win after working 3.1 innings in relief and allowing four runs on five hits while ringing up two strikeouts. Huggins received his second save of the year and got the last four outs of the game.
