Washburn begins NCAA play with Minnesota State on Thursday

BLUE NOTES
• The 2022 MIAA regular season champion Washburn Ichabod softball team will make its fifth NCAA postseason appearance and the second since the 2018 when they open play on May 12 at 2 p.m. against Minnesota State in Claremore, Okla.
• Washburn (45-13) is the No. 5 seed while Minnesota State (46-12) is the No. 4 seed.
• The other two teams in the subregion is the region's top seed Rogers State (47-9) and the No. 8 seed Winona State (38-15).
• The winner of this four-team regional will take on the winner of the other Central Regional being played in Edmond, Okla. The four teams there are No. 2 seed Central Oklahoma (45-10), No. 3 seed Augustana (47-8), No. 6 seed Arkansas Tech (39-17) and No. 7 seed Southern Arkansas (37-16).
• The two regional winners will face each other in a best two-of-three series starting May 19 at a site to be determined.
• The Ichabods had their school-record 24 game winning streak snapped at the MIAA Tournament going 3-2 over the weekend with both losses coming to Rogers State, including a ninth inning walk off in the MIAA Tournament Championship game on May 8.
• Brenda Holaday is in her sixth season as the Ichabod softball head coach recording a 178-114 overall record going 91-41 in MIAA contests leading the Ichabods to their first MIAA Regular Season title in her second year in 2018 and the fourth in school history this season. She has also led the Ichabods to two NCAA Regional berths in 2018 and this season, the fourth  and fifth appearances in school history.
• The Ichabods finished the home slate at Gahnstrom Field 26-0.
• The 26-game winning streak at Gahnstrom Field is currently the second-longest in the country trailing Augustana's 43-game streak.
• The Ichabods recorded their first 40-win season since 2002 when the Ichabods went 48-11 … overall the Ichabods have had now four seasons with at least 40 wins - 41 (1999), 48 (2002) and 50 (1986) and this season's 40 to this point.

IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
• The Washburn Ichabods are 0-8 all-time in the NCAA Tournament with their appearances coming during the 1999,  2006, 2008, 2018 and now 2022 seasons.
• In the South Central Regional Tournament in Kearney, Neb., in 1999 Washburn entered the four-team tourney as the No. 4 seed and fell to Nebraska-Kearney 4-0. In the second game, the Lady Blues fell to No. 2 seeded Truman State 6-3.
• In the 2006 Regional in Emporia, Kan. the Lady Blues were the No. 8 seed in the eight-team tournament and fell to top seeded Emporia State 9-0 and the No. 4 seed Northwest Missouri 11-5.
• In 2008, the Lady Blues fell to the top-seeded Hornets 5-3 and the lost to Minnesota State 4-2 the following day.
• In 2018, as the No. 6 seed, the Ichabods fell to No. 3-seeded Augustana 2-1 in Magnolia, Ark. in the first game and then dropped a 10-6 decision to the No. 7 seed, Minnesota State-Mankato.
• Against foes in this year's NCAA Central Regional, the Ichabods are 0-2 against first round opponent Minnesota State and 0-1 against Augustana, who is in the NCAA Central Regional bracket No. 2 in Edmond.

THE WEEK THAT WAS
• The Ichabods were 3-2 last weekend at the MIAA Tournament.
• At the conclusion of the tournament, Jaycee Ginter, Marrit Mead, Jaden LaBarge and Paige Robbins were all named to the MIAA All-Tournament team.
• Paige Robbins led the Ichabods at the MIAA Tournament batting a blistering .667 going 10 for 15 with four runs scored, a double and a triple with a team-high 13 total bases, 5 RBI and a .867 slugging percentage.
• Jaycee Ginter hit .444 with eight hits and two doubles with a home run and 3 RBI.
• Jaden LaBarge drove in five runs as did Ashton Friend.
• In the circle, Jaycee Ginter was 2-2 with a 2.28 ERA striking out 22 in 27 1/3 innings pitched.
• Raegen Hamm was 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA picking up the win against Missouri Western.
• The Ichabod defense was on point as they committed only one error in 131 chances.
• The Ichabods scored 25 runs compared to 10 for their opponents.
 
ICHABOD BITS
• Jaycee Ginter is tied for the nation's lead in the NCAA Division II ranks with 30 wins season entering the weekend tied with Roger State's Andrea Morales … out of all NCAA Division I, II, and III she is ranked second behind Georgina Corrick from South Florida who has 33 wins … she is eighth in total strikeouts with 278 … she already owns the Ichabod single-season strikeout mark … with the bat, she is 16th in the nation in RBI with 56 … Ginter also leads the nation in appearances with 43 in the circle.
• Raegen Hamm became Washburn's all-time leader in strikeouts at Nebraska-Kearney passing Kathy Mohler who played for Washburn from 1997-2000 … Hamm enters the weekend with 440.
• Ashton Friend is ranked 23rd in the nation in home runs with 14 and leads the MIAA in the category … she is also ranked 20th in the nation in RBI with 55.
• Marrit Mead is ranked second in the nation in hits with 84 (one shy of tying the Washburn single season record) and first in the nation in total doubles with 23 (a Washburn single season record).
• As a team the Ichabods are third in nation in being hit by a pitch … Washburn has had 60 batters reach base after getting plunked.
• Washburn is fourth in the nation in total hits with 529 while leading the MIAA in the category.
• Washburn is also sixth in fielding percentage (.979), 11th in total runs (364), 12th in doubles (99) and 46th in home runs (42).
• Paige Robbins is ranked fifth in the nation in toughest to strikeout … she has gone down on strikes three times in 127 at bats (0.03)

STATS TO KNOW FROM 2022
• Marrit Mead leads the Ichabods with 26 multi-hit games while Jaycee Ginter has 18 and Hadley Kerschen has 16.
• Jaycee Ginter leads the team with 18 multi RBI games and Ashton Friend has 16 multi RBI games.
• The Ichabods have outscored their opponents 364 to 177 this season and 67 to 38 in the first inning, 59 to 18 in the fifth inning and 19 to 10 in the seventh inning.
• Washburn is 22-3 when scoring in the first inning and 38-2 when leading after the fourth inning, 34-1 when leading after the fifth inning and 29-2 when leading after six innings.
• The Ichabods are 45-0 when outscoring their opponents.
• The Ichabods are 26-0 at home this season.
 
MIAA PRESEASON POLL
The Washburn Ichabod softball team was tabbed sixth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll that was released prior to the start of the season by the league office. 
The Ichabods picked up 117 total points trailing Missouri Western in fifth with 118 and Missouri Southern in fourth with 124. Central Oklahoma was the preseason favorite with eight first-place votes and 162 total points and Central Missouri had 158 points with six first-place votes. Rogers State was third with 142 points.
 
LAST TIME OUT
EDMOND, Okla. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team fell in the MIAA Tournament Championship game 4-2 as Rogers State connected on a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday in Edmond, Okla.
Rogers State, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, jumped on the board in the bottom of the third on a home run by Kimberli Presneli to left center breaking the scoreless tie.
However the lead was short-lived as the Ichabods (45-13) came back in the top of the fourth tying the score at 1-1. Jaycee Ginter doubled to left and then moved to third on a wild pitch. Ashton Friend connected on a sac fly to right and Ginter beat the throw home.
Washburn took the lead in the top of the sixth at 2-1 when Marrit Mead singled to right center and then swiped second. After Paige Robbins drew a walk, Ginter drove in Mead with a single up the middle.
After the Hillcats (47-9) went scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, a lead-off home run by Makayla Bowman tied the score at 2-2.
In the top of the eighth, Washburn had two out singles by Robbins and Ginter, a strikeout ended the threat.
The Ichabods retired the first two Hillcat batters in the ninth on a foul out and a strikeout, but a single by Presneli set up the walk-off from Chelsea Spain for the 4-2 win.
Ginter led the Ichabods with three hits as Washburn finished with six overall. In the circle she fell to 30-5 on the season striking out four.
Andrea Morales struck out 11 Ichabods improving to 30-3 on the season.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Jaycee Ginter, Marrit Mead, Jaden LaBarge and Paige Robbins were all named to the MIAA All-Tournament team.
 
OPPONENT QUICK SCOUT
MINNESOTA STATE
• Minnesota State (46-12, 26-4 NSIC) begins the week ranked as the #17 team in the NFCA Coaches Poll.
• The Mavericks went 2-2 last week in the NSIC Softball Tournament.
• On Thursday, Minnesota State squared off against the Peacocks of Upper Iowa in the opening round of the tourney.
• With Mackenzie Ward's third career no hitter, MSU defeated the Peacocks 8-0 in five innings.
• On day two of the tournament, Minnesota State suffered its first loss of the double elimination tournament to eventual runner-up Winona State 8-2.
• The Mavericks rebounded later on in day two with a 3-2 win over the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth. Facing elimination on Saturday, the Mavericks suffered a 4-0 loss to the Cougars of Sioux Falls ending their tournament appearance.
• The Ichabods and the Mavericks met the first weekend of the 2022 season with the Mavericks coming out on top both times winning 3-1 and 15-3.
• The all-time series has the Mavericks in the lead at 13-11 with MSU winning 10 of the last 11 meetings including a 10-6 win on May 11, 2018 in the last meeting in the NCAA playoffs.
 
ROGERS STATE
• Rogers State, the No. 1 overall seed in the Central Region handed the Ichabods both of their loses at the MIAA Tournament last weekend.
• The Hillcats currently own an 47-9 (20-6 MIAA) record and finished third in the MIAA regular season standings.
• Washburn won the two regular season meetings taking both games played in Topeka on April 25 in 3-2 and 2-0 wins.
• Elexis Watson leads the team with a .367 batting average and has driven in 26 runs with 12 home runs. Abbey Rogers leads the team in RBI with 45 and a .325 batting average.
• MIAA Pitcher of the Year Andrea Morales has a  1.01 ERA and has 303 strikeouts in 207.2 innings pitched.
• The Ichabods trail in the all-time series 6-4 with the Hillcats winning the last two and the Ichabods winning the two before this past weekend.
 
WINONA STATE
• Winona State enters the weekendd with a 40-15 (23-5 NSIC) record taking third in the NSIC regular season standings.
• Abbie Hlas leads the team with a .451 batting average and has 39 RBI to go with seven homers.
• Liz Pautz leads the Warriors pitching staff with a a 2.28 ERA and has 336 K's in 196.2 innings pitched.
• Winona State leads the all-time series 3-1 winning the last meeting 3-1 on March, 18, 2017 in St. Joseph, Mo.
• Overall the Warriors have won the last two meetings.
 
HEAD COACH BRENDA HOLADAY
• is 178-114 in her sixth season as the Ichabod head softball coach.
• coached 19 seasons at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka compiling a 351-93 record.
• led the Junior Blues to three 6A state championships as well as winning 14 league championships earning 16 6A state tournament berths, five second-place state finishes and three third-place state finishes and was inducted into the Washburn Rural High School Hall of Fame in 2018.
• was named the Centennial League Coach of the Year and City Coach of the Year nine different times earning the Midwest Sectional Coach of the Year in 2011 and the 6A Kansas Coach of the year two times in 2008 and 2011 and was named the overall Kansas Coach of the Year in 2011.
• while at Washburn Rural, she coached more than 40 players who have gone on to play college softball including three at the NCAA Division I level including former Ichabod head softball coach Lisa Carey, the winningest coach by wins in program history.

WASHBURN ICHABOD SOFTBALL HISTORY
• The Ichabods are 1251-936-1 in their 52nd year of softball.
• The Ichabods have made five NCAA Tournament appearances (1999, 2006, 2008, 2018, 2022).
• Washburn won the 2002, 2018 and 2022 regular season MIAA titles.
