Ichabods and Bearcats to square off as part of Boots, Bling and Bods Homecoming

FOR STARTERS
• The Washburn Ichabods will play their second consecutive game inside Yager Stadium as they will host Northwest Missouri on Saturday at 1 p.m. as part of Washburn's Homecoming Week festivities.
• Washburn is 1-7 and 0-7 in the MIAA after falling to Fort Hays State 31-28 on Oct. 21.
• The Bearcats are 4-4 this season and 3-4 in the MIAA after Pittsburg State topped the Bearcats 28-7 in Northwest's Homecoming game last time out.
• The Bearcats lead the all-time series 34-7. Washburn is 5-16 in games played in Topeka winning the last matchup in Yager Stadium 17-16 on Oct. 16, 2021.
• Washburn is 50-45-1 on homecoming and 0-2 against Northwest Missouri with a 41-40 loss on Oct. 23, 2010 and a 56-5 loss on Oct. 27, 2012.
• Overall the Ichabods have won their last two homecoming games with wins over Central Oklahoma (37-9 - Oct. 22, 2022) and Northeastern State (35-0 - Oct. 30, 2021).
 
 BLUE NOTES
• Taylon Peters climbed into sixth on the all-time rushing chart at Washburn with 2,310 yards playing in 40 career games … his 506 carries is seventh all-time at Washburn.
• The Ichabods have played 15 true freshmen so far this season and have also played 23 redshirt freshmen this season.
• D.J. Bell leads the team with 19 plays of more than 20 yards including 11 kickoff returns of more than 20 yards and Bell is also second in the MIAA in all-purpose yards per game with 125.5 ranking 24th in the NCAA ranks.
• The Ichabods are looking to avoid their first 0-8 start to MIAA play since the 1993 season when they started 0-10 in league action.

NOTING THE BEARCATS
• The Bearcats are 4-4 and 3-4 in the MIAA after falling 28-7 to No. 2-ranked Pittsburg State last time out.
• The loss snapped a two-game winning streak by the Bearcats.
• Offensively the Bearcats are ranked seventh in the MIAA averaging 403.3 yards per game and on defense NWMSU is allowing 325 yards per game.
• The Bearcats have the top-ranked run defense in the MIAA allowing just 56.3 yards per game by opponents on the ground and they have the No. 9-ranked pass defense.
• Northwest has the third-best rushing offense in the MIAA gaining 182.4 yards per game.
• Jay Harris leads the MIAA in rushing at 133.8 yards per contests averaging 6.1 yards per carry. Harris also leads the MIAA in all-purpose yards with 137.4 per game.
• Jake Fisher leads the MIAA in tackles for loss per game with 1.44 and he's third in the MIAA in sacks with .63 a game.
 
LAST MEETING WITH THE BEARCATS
(Oct. 15, 2022) MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabods rallied to take a 30-29 lead with 24 seconds to play but No. 16 Northwest Missouri traveled 43 yards in three plays after a 38-yard kickoff return to kick a 36-yard field goal to take a 32-30 lead with two seconds to play as the Ichabods fall in a heartbreaker as the multi-lateral kickoff return was unsuccessful as Washburn falls to 4-3 on the season.
The Ichabods took the one-point lead on a 10-yard run by Kellen Simoncic with 18 seconds to play on a 4th and goal. However a big kickoff return by the Bearcats put Northwest (5-2) in position and after pass plays of 20 yards and 23 yards to the Ichabod 19 setting up the go-ahead field goal.
Washburn led 24-23 with 7:15 to go in the game when Simoncic hit Peter Afful on a 28-yard touchdown pass finishing off a 78-yard, five-play drive. However Northwest came back on an 11-play, 70-yard drive taking a 29-24 lead after the two-point conversion pass failed.
With 11:52 to go in the game, Simoncic hit Tyce Brown for his first touchdown reception of his career as the Ichabods cut into the Bearcat lead at 23-17 after neither team scored in the third quarter.
The Ichabods were down 2-0 when Northwest recorded a safety against the Ichabods and then would go up 9-0 on a touchdown pass with 3:49 to play in the opening quarter. Washburn got on the board on a 33-yard field goal by Kameron Lake with 14:12 to play in the first half.
On the following drive, the Bearcats had a 75-yard drive going up 16-3 with 11:58 to play in the half. However the Ichabods scored their first touchdown of the game on a 30-yard strike from Simoncic to Afful with 32 seconds to go, but the Bearcats scored right before the half on a 63-yard, three-play drive to go up 23-10 as time expired in the first half.
Simoncic finished 26 of 40 for 314 yards and three touchdowns but was sacked seven times completing 14-straight passes at one point. Hunter Browning rushed for 52 yards and 11 attempts while James Letcher, Jr., who became Washburn's all-time leader in receptions, had eight catches for 129 yards. Afful had five catches for 78 yards and two scores.
Letcher raised his career total to 197 receptions passing Ichabod Hall of Famer Sam Sissom who had 191 in his Washburn career. Letcher also passed the 5,000-yard mark in all-purpose yards at Washburn moving his total to 5,023 yards, now trailing Washburn's all-time leader, Hall of Famer Troy Slusser, who had 5,210 yards.
Grant Bruner, the nation's leading tackler, had 14 tackles including 12 solo stops.
Both teams had 25 first downs as the Bearcats outgained the Ichabods 439 to 357. Washburn was 8 of 15 on third downs holding the Bearcats to 5 of 11 conversion attempts.

SERIES HISTORY WITH NORTHWEST MISSOURI
• The Bearcats lead the all-time series 34-7.
• Washburn's last win over the Bearcats in Maryville was on Oct. 8, 2005 in a 31-28 victory as the Ichabods would go on to win the MIAA Championships that season.
• Washburn is 5-16 in games played in Topeka winning the last matchup in Yager Stadium 17-16 on Oct. 16, 2021.
• Washburn is 2-18 in games played in Maryville, Mo.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS
(Oct. 21, 2023) TOPEKA, Kan. -- A Washburn Ichabod frantic comeback came up short in a 31-28 loss to Fort Hays State on Saturday at Yager Stadium. The Ichabods return to action next week hosting Northwest Missouri as part of Washburn's Homecoming festivities Oct. 28 with a 1 p.m. start.
Washburn trailed 31-14 with 2:29 to play in the third quarter before trimming the Fort Hays State lead to 31-21 with 6:08 remaining when Teondre Carter, who made his first start, scored from 5-yards out. His touchdown run was set up after the Ichabods' Nasjon Porter blocked a Tiger field goal attempt and Kamble Haverkamp returned it 34 yards. After a 59-yard pass from Sam Van Dyne to D.J. Bell setting the Ichabods up at the Tiger 5, Carter went out the left side for the score.
On the Tigers' next possession, the Washburn defense held the Tigers to a punt and Bell returned it 47 yards to the Tiger 42 yard line. After passes to Tyce Brown and Triston Johnson, Van Dyne hit Johnson for a 25-yard touchdown pass pulling the Ichabods within three at 31-28 with 2:35 to go.
After an Ichabod kickoff, the Tigers converted on a third and four from the 31 and three plays later ran out the clock for the win.
The Tiger (6-2, 5-2 MIAA) led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and it was not until the 11:34 mark of the second quarter the Ichabods got on the board with a 6-yard touchdown run by Carter cutting the Tiger lead in half at 14-7.
FHSU added to its lead with a 44-yard field goal with 8:59 to play in the opening half building a 17-7 lead.
The Ichabods (punted on their next drive returning possession to the Tigers at the FHSU 1-yard line after Jake Zeller's 39-yard punt was downed at the 1-yard line. Five plays later on the Tiger drive, Caeden Spencer picked off a pass and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown as the Ichabods trailed 17-14 at the break.
Carter led the Ichabods with 56 yards rushing scoring two touchdowns and Van Dyne finished 19 of 33 for 202 yards and a touchdown. Bell had six catches for 82 yards including 72 after the catch and Johnson had five catches for 55 yards and a score.
Defensively, Josh Grant had nine tackles with seven solo stops and Jaquez White, C.J. Callaghan, Spencer and L.J. Minner, Jr. each had seven tackles.
The Tigers outgained the Ichabods 487 to 280 running 82 plays compared to 58 for Washburn. 
 
A WIN OVER NORTHWEST MISSOURI WOULD
• move the Ichabods to 2-7 on the season.
• be the second in a row over the Bearcats in Topeka.
• move the Ichabods to 8-34 all-time against Northwest winning their second game in the last three meetings.

UP NEXT
Washburn will be on the road for the final time in 2023 as they will face Central Oklahoma in Edmond on Nov. 4 with a 2 p.m. start. Washburn will then play its final game of the season on Nov. 11 hosting Northeastern State at 1 p.m. on senior day in Yager Stadium.
