Ichabods hosting Griffons on Hall of Fame Saturday

FOR STARTERS
• The Washburn Ichabods return home for the annual Washburn Athletics Hall of Fame Game on Oct. 7 when they will host Missouri Western at 3 p.m. at Yager Stadium.
• Washburn dropped to 1-4 on the season and 0-4 in MIAA play after losing at Nebraska-Kearney 27-21.
• The Griffons are 4-1 this season after beating previously unbeaten No. 11-ranked Emporia State 34-31 in their homecoming game with a field goal as time expired.
• The Washburn Athletic 2023 Hall of Fame class which will be enshrined on Oct. 7 in a brunch ceremony prior to Saturday's game. Entering the Hall of Fame will be five individuals who were all selected as All-Americans during their Ichabod careers. The newest inductees include Jessica (Fey) Stutzman (volleyball), Laura (Kinderknecht) Rezac (basketball), Will McNeill (basketball), Grant Gould (football) and Brian Folkerts (football).
 
 BLUE NOTES
• Taylon Peters climbed into sixth on the all-time rushing chart at Washburn with 2,256 yards … his 488 carries is eighth all-time at Washburn.
• The Ichabods have played 12 true freshmen so far this season and have also played 16 redshirt freshmen this season.
• The Ichabods are ranked sixth in the NCAA D2 ranks in net punting at 37.55.
• D.J. Bell is 10th in the nation in kickoff return average at 34.2 per return.
• D.J. Bell leads the team with 11 plays of more than 20 yards including eight kickoff returns of more than 20 yards and Bell also leads the MIAA in all-purpose yards per game with 119.4.
• Taylon Peters is 32nd in the nation in yards per game averaging 83.5.
• Jake Zeller leads the MIAA in punting averaging 47.1 yards per attempt and has forced seven fair catches.
• The Ichabods are looking to avoid their first 0-5 start to MIAA play since the 1993 season when they started 0-10 in league play.

• The Washburn Ichabods have two former players on NFL rosters this season.
• Kyle Hinton is on the 53-man roster of the Atlanta Falcons.
• Corey Ballentine was elevated to the 53-man roster in Green Bay for its game on Sept. 24.

Washburn Ichabod head coach Craig Schurig . . .
• was named head coach of the Ichabod football program Dec. 28, 2001.
• is 138-96 (.599) in his 21st season as the Ichabod head coach and the sixth-longest tenured football coach in MIAA history.
• is 121-83 (.603) against the MIAA in league games.
• has led the Ichabods to four NCAA Playoff appearances and four bowl appearances and three bowl championships.
• led the Ichabods to the 2005 MIAA regular season outright championship.
• led the Ichabods to the program's first 10-win season and their first NCAA or NAIA playoff game victory in school history with a win over Abilene Christian during the 2011 season.

Missouri Western head coach Tyler Fenwick . . .  
• is 4-1 in his first season at Missouri Western and is 57-49 in ten seasons as a head coach.
• Fenwick previously served as the offensive coordinator at Missouri Western from 2007-2012 and helped the Griffons averaged 432.8 points per season and 35.1 points per game.
• As a team, the Griffons went 53-18 and played in the NCAA Division II playoffs three times as well as making three bowl appearances.
• is 0-0 against Washburn.
 
NOTING THE GRIFFONS
• The Griffons are 4-1 this season and 3-1 in the MIAA while scoring 40.4 points per game holding opponents to 25.6 ppg.
• The Griffons are the No. 2-ranked scoring offense in the league and their defense is ranked seventh.
• The Griffons lead the MIAA in sacks with 16.
• Armani Edden is sixth in the league in total offense averaging 234 yards per game.
• Brandon Hall leads the team in rushing with 58.8 yards per game averaging 6.8 yards per carry and Jared Scott is averaging 5.0 yards per carry with three touchdowns and 54 yards per game … Seth Cromwell is averaging 38 yards per game and has eight touchdowns on 40 carries this season.
• Jonas Bennett is averaging 65 yards per game receiving with 28 catches for 326 yards and three touchdowns.
• The defense is led by TreVon Holmes with 37 tackles and Dakari Streeter has 16 tackles with seven sacks for 43 yards.
 
LAST MEETING WITH THE GRIFFONS
(Sept. 24, 2022) ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Washburn Ichabods played their first overtime game of the 2022 season and needed only one offensive play to come away with a 38-31 victory over Missouri Western. 
The Griffons (2-2, 2-2 MIAA) scored first, driving nine plays on the opening drive to set up a field goal. It would be the first and only lead for Missouri Western in the game. 
Washburn (3-1, 3-1 MIAA) responded with a 40-yard pass from Kellen Simoncic to James Letcher Jr. to set up a 1-yard QB sneak from Simoncic into the endzone.
The Ichabod defense forced two more punts in the quarter. On the next offensive possession, Simoncic found Letcher Jr. again, this time in the endzone from 25-yards out to lead 14-3. 
The first Washburn drive of the second quarter stalled in the red zone and the ensuing field goal attempt was blocked by the Griffons. 
Missouri Western drove 87 yards on ten plays to score. Ending with back-to-back passes from Reagan Jones to Caleb Martin for 12 and 36 yards respectfully to make it 17-10. 
Both teams traded punts until the next Ichabod drive with under two minutes in the half. A 29-yard catch and run by Letcher Jr. Set up another field goal attempt by Kameron Lake which was successful from 38-yards. A long field goal attempt by the Griffons with one second in the half was no good and Washburn led 17-14 at the break. 
Missouri Western began the third quarter with a 13-play drive which resulted in a field goal to tie the game at 17. The Ichabods needed just four plays to score. A 35-yard pass to Collin Wilson set up a seven-yard rush by Taylon Peters, putting Washburn up 24-17. 
One punt for each team wrapped up the third quarter. Two plays into the fourth quarter the Griffons tied the game with 14:33 to play after two runs by Jonas Bennett. 
Washburn drove 66 yards over 13 plays and came up empty after a missed field goal from 25 yards away. The defense forced a quick Missouri Western three and out. 
Once again, the Ichabods drove into Griffon territory, this time the drive ended after a fumble. The very next play Christian Clark intercepted a pass with 5:29 remaining to give Washburn back the ball. 
A 43-yard run from Hunter Browning set up another connection between Simoncic and Letcher Jr., this time from 22-yards away to put the Ichabods up 31-24 with 4:41 remaining. 
Missouri Western drove 60 yards in 10 plays and found the endzone with just 38 seconds remaining to tie the game and send it to overtime. 
Taylon Peters ran left the first play of overtime and went all 25-yards into the endzone for what would be the game-winning touchdown. The Griffons ran seven plays but never found the endzone in overtime. 
Washburn's last overtime game came on Oct. 9, 2021, against Fort Hays State where they won 23-20. The Ichabods had never played an overtime contest against Missouri Western. The last time the two played in St. Joseph was in 2018. 
Letcher Jr. finished the game with 180 yards receiving on 12 catches and two touchdowns. He fell one short of the Washburn single-game reception record but sits all alone at third on the charts. Taylon Peters had two touchdowns on the ground and Hunter Browning rushed for 82 on seven carries. 
Grant Bruner posted 14 tackles to lead the Ichabods, Channon Ross added 10. Christian Clark's interception was his first of the season and second of his career.  
Washburn had 521 total yards of offense in the game, compared to 452 for the Griffons. Simoncic had all 311 yards in the air, completing 25 of 43 passes, while the Ichabods rushed for 210 yards at a clip of 6.4 per carry.

SERIES HISTORY WITH MISSOURI WESTERN
• The Griffons lead the all-time series 26-22-2.
• Washburn has won the last two meetings in the series.
• Washburn 14-11 in games played in Topeka and 8-15-2 away from Yager Stadium.
• The teams have split the last 10 meetings.
• Last season's meeting in the Ichabods' 38-31 win was the only overtime game in the 50-game series.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS
(Sept. 30, 2023) KEARNEY, Neb. – KEARNEY, Neb. – The Washburn Ichabods fell 27-21 to Nebraska-Kearney on the road Saturday at Cope Stadium with a combined 28 points being scored in the final 15 minutes of the game.
The Ichabods (1-4, 0-4 MIAA) trailed 6-0 at the break after a scoreless first quarter as the Lopers took a 6-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
In the third quarter, the Lopers (2-3, 2-3 MIAA), the Ichabods forced a fumble, but was unable to capitalize and on the ensuing punt, the Lopers blocked the kick and then one play later, UNK went up 13-0 with 8:42 to go in the frame.
Washburn came back with a score on its next possession when Sam Van Dyne hit Connor Searcy on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 3:56 to go in the third trimming the Loper lead to 13-7. The Ichabod defense forced another punt, but neither team would score the rest of the way.
In the fourth quarter, Josh Grant picked off a UNK pass at the Washburn six yard line halting the Loper drive, but the Ichabod drive stalled forcing a punt. On the second play of the drive, UNK scored on a 42-yard pass play with 12:51 to go in the game stretching its lead to 20-7.
On the Ichabods' next drive, Washburn drove to midfield, but a Washburn fumble was returned 35 yards for a score with 9:28 to go as the Lopers went up 27-7. Washburn then went on a 16-play, 70-yard drive to trim the margin to 13 at 27-14 after Van Dyne hit Maury Sullivan for a touchdown pass with 3:05 to go.
The Ichabod defense held the Lopers on a fourth and one play with 67 seconds to play in the game and then Van Dyne hit D.J. Bell on a 54-yard touchdown strike with 41 seconds to play as the Ichabods cut the deficit to 27-21.
Lining up for an onside kick, Gavin Wilhelm's kick bounced off a Loper returner and after a scrum, the Lopers recovered and then after one kneel down the clock hit 0:00.
The Ichabod defense held the Lopers to 261 yards on 50 plays while the Ichabods ran 82 plays for 421 total yards.
Van Dyne passed for a career-high 378 yards and three touchdowns completing 30 of 45 attempts, but was sacked six times in the game. Triston Johnson had five catches for 106 yards. On the ground Taylon Peters had 14 rushes for 50 yards.
L.J. Minner, Jr., Mason Capper and Daniel Chavez all had four tackles.
On special teams, Jake Zeller averaged 52 yards per punt on three attempts including an 81-yard punt, the third-longest in program history behind a pair of 87-yard punts.
 
A WIN OVER MISSOURI WESTERN WOULD
• move the Ichabods to 2-4 on the season.
• be the third in a row over the Griffons.
• avoid the Ichabods' first 0-5 start to MIAA play since 1993.
• be the Griffons' second-straight loss in Topeka.
• be Washburn's sixth win in the last eight games over the Griffons.

A LOSS TO MISSOURI WESTERN WOULD
• end the Ichabods' two-game winning streak over the Griffons.

UP NEXT
The Ichabods will travel down the interstate to face Emporia State on Oct. 14 with a 1 p.m. kickoff before returning to Topeka to play their next two games in Yager Stadium with Fort Hays State on Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. and then Northwest Missouri on Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. for Homecoming.
