No. 1 Washburn hosts No. 8 Ouachita Baptist in first round of NCAA Tournament on Friday

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn soccer heads into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 5,479 days on Friday as the No. 1 seed in the Central Region hosting No. 8 Ouachita Baptist at Yager Stadium beginning at 6 p.m. 


KICKOFF

  • Washburn soccer begins it's NCAA Tournament journey as the No. 1 seed in the central region and will face the No. 8 seed Ouachita Baptist in the first round.
  • The Ichabods will stay in Topeka to face the Tigers at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17 in Yager Stadium. 

THE BIG DANCE

  • The first two rounds of the NCAA Central Region Tournament will be held in Topeka with the semifinals match on Sunday taking place at 1 p.m. in Yager regardless on if the Ichabods advance. 
  • No. 4 Minnesota State - Mankato and No. 5 Central Missouri will face each other in the other match in Topeka beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday. 
  • The third round of the NCAA Tournament will be played on Dec. 1
  • This is the third ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament for Washburn, and the first since the 2008 season. 
  • The Ichabods are 2-2 in NCAA Tournament matches in program history but have never hosted a match at home. 

BOD BREAKDOWN

  • WU enters the week with a 16-3-1 record. 
  • Washburn finished the regular season 15-2-1 and won the second MIAA Regular Season Championship in program history. 
  • The Ichabods went 9-1-1 in the MIAA with the only loss coming to Emporia State in the last match of the season. 
  • Washburn set a new program record with its 16th win, breaking the pervious high set in 2006 and 2008 when WU won 15.
  • The Ichabods went 11-6-2 in 2022 and finished sixth in the MIAA. 
  • With two wins Washburn would advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. 
  • The two winning teams from the Central Region will travel to the top remaining seed from the Midwest region to play third round and quarterfinal matches beginning on Dec. 1. 
  • The Ichabods return 19 players from last seasons roster while adding two transfers and seven freshmen.

A LOOK AT LAST WEEK

  • Washburn's MIAA Championship Tournament run was ended in the semifinals with a 3-2 loss to Emporia State on Thursday. 
  • The Ichabods trip to the semifinals was the second under head coach Davy Phillips
  • Emporia State scored three goals in the first 46 minutes of action with the final two coming in the last minute of the first half and the first minute of the second half both on corner kicks. 
  • Jadyn Allen scored the first goal for Washburn in the 80th minute on an assist by Aubrey Tanksley
  • Ana Muruzabal cut the deficit down to one in the 83rd minute with a goal on an assist from Khloe Schuckman
  • Raegan Wells made two saves playing all 90 minutes in goal. 
  • It's only the second time all season that the Ichabods have surrendered more than two goals in a match and the first time since Sep. 3. 
  • Emporia State went on to win the MIAA Tournament defeating Central Missouri 3-2 in the championship. 
  • Aubrey Tanksley and Grace Peterson were selected to the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the tournament. 

STACKING STATS

  • Washburn is 56th in the nation out of 251 teams averaging 1.45 assists per match, that number is second among MIAA teams. 
  • The Ichabods are 13th in the nation in win-loss-tied percentage and are first in the MIAA. 
  • WU is 49th in the nation in points per match averaging 5.35, first in the MIAA. 
  • The Ichabods are second in the MIAA in total assists and are third in total points and total goals. 
  • Aubrey Tanksley and Khloe Schuckman are tied for 21st nationally in game-winning goals with four on the year. 
  • Mackinly Rohn is tied for 44th in the nation in assists with seven and tied for 71st in assists per game. She is third in the MIAA in both categories. 
  • Muruzabal and Khloe Schuckman are both in the top-10 in the MIAA in total points with Muruzabal 6th and Schuckman 8th.
  • Raegan Wells is tied for 12th in the nation and for second in the MIAA in shutouts with eleven combined shutouts. 

BLUE REPORT

  • Ana Muruzabal leads Washburn in goals with eight and and in points with 19, doing so off the bench in 657 minutes of total action. Fifteen of her 22 total shots have been on goal.
  • Khloe Schuckman has 17 points on the year and is second on the team in both goals and assists with six and five respectively. She has logged 1,275 minutes and leads WU with 40 shots. She has scored at least two points in five of the last six matches. 
  • Mackinly Rohn leads the Ichabods with seven assists on the year. She's also scored three goals to sit third on the team with 13 points. She has started all but two matches and logged 1,188 minutes as a freshman. 
  • Viviana Soto-Herrera has five goals and two assists on the year and is second on the Ichabods with 29 shots taken. She has stared all 19 matches she has appeared in and played 1,216 total minutes. 
  • Raegan Wells has made 49 saves this season in 1,775 minutes. She has 10 solo shutouts and combined with Hailey Beck and Alli Harrington to complete an eleventh. She has a .778 save percentage on the year with 124 shots faced. She has started all 20 matches. 
  • Aubrey Tanksley has scored four goals on the year on 24 shots. All four goals have been game winners, tied for the most on the team. She has started three matches and played a total of 952 minutes. She has recorded two assists total, both coming in the last two matches. 
  • Lakin Rold leads all Ichabod non-goalies in minutes with 1,403 this season. She has started all 20 matches she has played in giving her 39 consecutive starts to begin her Washburn career. She also has one assist on the year. 
  • Riley Wells has three goals and three assists on the year. She has taken 14 total shots and has started all 20 matches while playing 1,032 minutes.
  • Taylor Bockover and Grace Peterson have each started all 20 matches this season, logging 1,393 and 1,084 minutes respectively. They are two of five Ichabods to start every game this season.  
  • Josie Boyle has started all 15 matches she has played in this season, she has logged 1,318 minutes with one goal.
  • Jordan Tenpas has started all 15 matches on defense she has played this year, logging 1,280 minutes in that time with one assist.
  • Jadyn Allen has three goals and one assist on the year, logging 737 minutes off the bench.
  • Lindsey Maul missed five matches with injuries but has accumulated 948 minutes in the other matches with seven total starts and two goals with one game-winner. 
  • Belle Kennedy has started all 20 matches playing 1,196 minutes, she is second on the Ichabods with 26 shots and has three goals and one assist. She missed the final 84 minutes of the MIAA Tournament semifinal match due to injury. 
  • Cloe Quintana has logged 916 minutes off the bench with one start and appeared in all 20 matches. 
  • All twenty-nine players on the Ichabod roster have appeared in at least one match this season.

MILESTONE MARKERS

  • Raegan Wells is 5 saves away from 333 career saves which would tie her for the most in program history. 
  • Khloe Schuckman is one point away from 50 in her career which would put her third in Washburn soccer history. 
  • Riley Wells needs one more point to reach 20 in her career. 
  • Ana Muruzabal is one point away from 20 in her Ichabod career all coming this season. 

OPPONENT QUICK SCOUT
Match #21 - Ouachita Baptist

  • Ouachita Baptist is 11-2-7 on the year after winning the GAC Championship Tournament 2-0 over Oklahoma Baptist.
  • The Tigers finished second in the GAC regular season with a 6-2-4 record.
  • Kevin Wright is in his 12th season leading OBU where he has a 107- 85 record.
  • Assistant coach Kyle Jobe rounds out the coaching staff.
  • In 2022 Ouachita Baptist went 9-5-5 and fell in the semifinals of the GAC Tournament.
  • This is the second NCAA Tournament appearance for the Tigers in program history with the first coming in 2007.
  • Jamie Fowler leads Ouachita Baptist with 16 points on the year on a team high six goals and four assists. She's started in seven of 20 matches playing 816 minutes.
  • Gracen Turner has four goals and two assists this season for the Tigers. She has started in 13 matches playing 896 total minutes.
  • Abbey Inman leads OBU non-goalies with 1,729 minutes on the year. She has started all 20 matches as a defender.
  • Michele Snow has started and played all 20 games in goal for 1,782 combined minutes. She has made 78 total saves with a .876 save percentage and 11 shutouts.
  • Fernanda Valencia has eight goals on 14 shots for Ouachita Baptist.
