Washburn set for NCAA Third Round against Hornets in Ohio on Friday

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn soccer heads to Ashland, Ohio for round three of the NCAA Tournament and round four against Emporia State this season as the No. 1 seed Ichabods will square off with the No. 2 seeded Hornets at 2 p.m. central time on Friday, Dec. 1. 

KICKOFF

  • Washburn soccer continues it's NCAA Tournament journey as the No. 1 seed in the central region and will face the No. 2 seed Emporia State for a fourth time this season.  
  • The Ichabods and Hornets will Topeka face off in their fourth unique location of the year, this time with the match taking place in Ashland, Ohio at 2 p.m. CT on Friday, Dec. 1. 
  • Emporia State advances to the third round after 2-1 wins over No. 7 Fort Hays State and No. 6 Bemidji State.

THE BIG DANCE

  • After hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament in Topeka the Ichabods are in Ashland, Oh. the site of the No. 1 seed Ashland University from the midwest region where the third and fourth rounds will be played. 
  • From the midwest region No. 1 Ashland and No. 3 Grand Valley State are on the other side of the bracket playing at 5 p.m. on Friday with the two winners facing eachother. 
  • The fourth round of the NCAA Tournament will be played on Dec. 3.
  • This is the third ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament for Washburn, and the first since the 2008 season. 
  • The Ichabods are 4-2 in NCAA Tournament matches in program history after wins in the first two rounds, but have never played in the third round. 

TOURNAMENT INFO

  • All matches for the tournament will be live streamed on the Great Midwest digital network by Ashland University at no charge. A link can be found here. 
  • Live stats can be found through the Washburn live stat link and tickets can be purchased through the Ashland athletics website. 

BOD BREAKDOWN

  • WU enters the match with a 18-3-1 record. 
  • They advance to the third round after a 1-0 2OT win over No. 8 Ouachita Baptist in the first round at a 3-2 2OT victory against No. 5 Central Missouri in the second. 
  • Washburn finished the regular season 15-2-1 and won the second MIAA Regular Season Championship in program history. 
  • The Ichabods went 9-1-1 in the MIAA with the only loss coming to Emporia State in the last match of the season. 
  • Washburn set a new program record with 18 wins this season, breaking the pervious high set in 2006 and 2008 when WU won 15.
  • The Ichabods went 11-6-2 in 2022 and finished sixth in the MIAA. 
  • Washburn has played its second most matches in a season in program history (24 in 2008) and will play its first match ever in December. 
  • The Ichabods return 19 players from last seasons roster while adding two transfers and seven freshmen.

HOW WE GOT HERE

  • Washburn's NCAA Tournament run began with a 2OT victory over the No. 8 seed Ouachita Baptist on Nov. 17.
  • Khloe Schuckman scored the only goal of the match in the first 10-minute overtime period.
  • Raegan Wells recorded her 11th shutout of the season playing all 110 minutes and making five saves. 
  • The Ichabods played and won a second straight overtime match on Nov. 19 as they came from behind to defeat No. 5 Central Missouri 3-2. 
  • The Jennies scored the first two goals of the match both coming in the first half. 
  • Khloe Shcuckman was assisted by Lakin Rold in the 62nd minute to score the first goal of the game for the home team. 
  • With just two seconds to go in regulation Aubrey Tanksley was able to knock a deflected corner kick off a UCM defender into the back of the net to tie the match at two. 
  • In the 109th minute with just 85 seconds before the match would head to penalty kicks Schuckman took a pass from Jadyn Allen past the defense for her second goal. 
  • Washburn held on in the final minute to complete the comeback victory. 
  • Wells played the entire match again and made six saves. 

STACKING STATS

  • The Ichabods are 8th in the nation in win-loss-tied percentage.
  • Washburn is 62nd in the nation out of 251 teams averaging 1.41 assists per match, that number is second among MIAA teams. 
  • WU is 49th in the nation in points per match averaging 5.32, first in the MIAA. 
  • The Ichabods are first in the MIAA in total assists and are third in total points and total goals. Nationally they are 30th, 33rd and 32nd respectively. 
  • Khloe Schuckman is tied for 5th nationally with six game winning goals this season, Aubrey Tanksley is 25th with four. 
  • Raegan Wells is second in the national in goalie minutes played with 1,995. She is less than seven minutes behind the leader. 
  • Wells is tied for seventh in the nation in solo shutouts with 11 on the year. 
  • Mackinly Rohn is tied for 46th in the nation in assists with seven, she is 86th nationally in assists per game. 
  • Schuckman is tied for 69th nationally in both total goals and total points. She has nine goals and 23 points on the year. 

BLUE REPORT

  • Khloe Schuckman leads Washburn in both points and goals with 23 and nine respectively. She is also second on the Ichabods with five assists while leading with 53 shots on the year. Six of her goals have gone for game winners including both NCAA Tournament matches. She has played and started in 21 matches logging a total of 1,468 minutes. 
  • Ana Muruzabal is second on the Ichabods in goals with eight and and in points with 19. She is doing so off the bench in 719 minutes of total action. Fifteen of her 23 total shots have been on goal.
  • Mackinly Rohn leads the Ichabods with seven assists on the year. She's also scored three goals to sit third on the team with 13 points. She has started all but two matches and logged 1,327 minutes as a freshman. 
  • Viviana Soto-Herrera has five goals and two assists on the year and is second on the Ichabods with 34 shots taken. She has stared all 21 matches she has appeared in and played 1,415 total minutes. 
  • Raegan Wells has made 60 saves this season in 1,995 minutes. She has 11 solo shutouts and combined with Hailey Beck and Alli Harrington to complete an twelfth. She has a .789 save percentage on the year with 141 shots faced. She has started all 22 matches. 
  • Aubrey Tanksley has scored five goals on the year on 27 shots. Four of the goals have been game winners. She has started three matches and played a total of 1,057 minutes and picked up two assists on the year. 
  • Taylor Bockover leads all Ichabod non-goalies in minutes with 1,582 this season. She has started all 22 matches on defense and helped as part of all 12 shutouts. 
  • Josie Boyle has started all 15 matches she has played in this season, she has logged 1,530 minutes with one goal.
  • Jordan Tenpas has started all 17 matches on defense she has played this year, logging 1,500 minutes in that time with one assist.
  • Riley Wells has three goals and three assists on the year. She has taken 15 total shots and has started all 22 matches while playing 1,188 minutes.
  • Lakin Rold and Grace Peterson have each started all 22 matches this season, logging 1,524 and 1,256 minutes respectively. They are two of five Ichabods to start every game this season. Rold has added two assists while on defense. 
  • Jadyn Allen has three goals and two assists on the year, logging 805 minutes off the bench.
  • Lindsey Maul missed five matches with injuries but has accumulated 1,070 minutes in the other matches with seven total starts and two goals with one game-winner. 
  • Belle Kennedy has started 21 matches playing 1,249 minutes, she is tied for third on the Ichabods with 27 shots and has three goals and one assist. 
  • Cloe Quintana has logged 1,084 minutes off the bench with one start and appeared in all 22 matches. 
  • All twenty-nine players on the Ichabod roster have appeared in at least one match this season.

REGIONAL RECOGNITION

  • Washburn had three players earn D2CCA All-Central Region recognition on Tuesday morning.
  • Jordan Tenpas was a first-team selection as a defender, the first Ichabod to land on the first team since Lisa Fahey in 2008. 
  • Raegan Wells and Khloe Schuckman both landed on the second team as they earned the honors for the first times in their career. 
  • The Ichabods had not had a player on the regional team since 2013. Three selections marks the second most in a season in program history.

MILESTONE MARKERS

  • In the win over Central Missouri, Raegan Wells broke the program record for career saves at 334 and currently holds 339 in her career. 
  • With just five more minutes played Wells will reach the 2,000 minute mark, in 85 minutes she will play the most minutes of any Ichabod in a season in program history. 
  • Khloe Schuckman is one goal away from 10 on the season which would make her just the second player in program history to reach that mark. She is also just one assist away from 10 in her career. 
  • Belle Kennedy needs one more goal from 10 in her career. 
  • Riley Wells needs one more point to reach 20 in her career. 
  • Ana Muruzabal is one point away from 20 in her Ichabod career all coming this season. 
  • Jadyn Allen is 40 minutes away from 2,000 career minutes played, Josie Boyle is 50 away from the same mark. 

OPPONENT QUICK SCOUT
Match #23 - Emporia State

  • Brian Sailer leads the Hornets in his 10th season in charge of the ESU soccer program. 
  • Sailer will not be coaching Emporia State on Friday after being placed on paid administrative leave.
  • Assistant coach Chloe Marquez will serve as the interm head coach for the match. Fellow assistant Casey Mclellan will round out the staff.
  • In addition members of the team will face sanctions in the form of limited playing time in the match. 
  • Emporia State is 14-5-4 this season and finished in fourth place in the MIAA regular season with an 8-2-1 record in conference play. 
  • The Hornets won the MIAA Championship Tournament 3-2 over Central Missouri and earned the No. 2 seed in the Central Region for the NCAA Tournament. 
  • This will be the fourth matchup between the two teams this season, the most Washburn will play a single opponent in a season in program history. 
  • All four matches have been played on different fields. 
  • ESU went 2-0-1 in neutral field matches and 5-2-3 away from home in the regular season. 
  • The Hornets went 13-6-5 last season and lost in the third round of the NCAA Tournament to Bemidji State. 
  • Mackenzie Dimarco leads ESU and all MIAA players with 48 points and 22 goals on the year. She has taken 96 shots in 1,707 minutes and also adds four assists. She was named the MIAA Player of the Year and was the D2CCA Central Region Player of the Year. 
  • Hannah Woolery leads Emporia State with six assists this season. She has also scored five goals to put her second on the team with 16 points. She has played 22 matches and logged 1,777 minutes. 
  • Joanie Westcoat leads ESU with 2,070 minutes played on the year on defense, she has assisted on two goals. 
  • Mackenzi Goen has made 76 saves with a .784 save percentage and four shutouts on the year. She has started and played in 21 matches and logged 1,608 minutes. 
  • Hadlie Lowe is third on the squad with 12 points on the year all coming on six goals. She has played in all 23 matches making 22 starts.
  • The Hornets are on a 10 match winning streak entering the match.
  • ESU is scoring 1.96 goals per contest while allowing 1.22 and are taking 13.2 shots per game while opponents take 11.7.
  • Washburn is 18-18-4 against ESU all-time dating back to to 2003. Emporia has won the two most recent matches this season after the Ichabods won the first on the road. 

LOOKING AHEAD

  • With a win Washburn would face the winner of No. 1. Ashland and No. 3 Grand Valley State on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. CT. A loss would end the season.
