Ichabods set for National Quarterfinals match against Grand Valley State on Sunday

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The 2023 Central Region champion Washburn Ichabods head to the national stage and will take on Grand Valley State in the NCAA National Quarterfinals at 2 p.m. CT on Dec. 3 in Ashland, Ohio.  

KICKOFF 

  • Washburn soccer continues it's NCAA Tournament journey out of the Central Region into nationals as the No. 1 seed Ichabods take on the No. 3 seed from the Midwest Region, Grand Valley State.  

  • The Ichabods and will face the Lakers for the first time ever at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday.  

  • Grand Valley State advances out of the Midwest Region after a 1-0 win over the No. 1 seed Ashland on Friday.  

THE BIG DANCE 

  • This is the third ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament for Washburn, and the first since the 2008 season.  

  • The Ichabods are 5-2 in NCAA Tournament matches in program history with Sunday as the first game outside of the Central Region.  

  • The semifinals and national championship matches will be played on Dec. 7 and Dec. 9 in Matthews, North Carolina

  • All matches for the tournament will be live streamed on the Great Midwest digital network by Ashland University at no charge. A link can be found on the Washburn Soccer schedule page.  

  • Live stats can be found through the Washburn live stat link and tickets can be purchased through the Ashland athletics website.  

BOD BREAKDOWN 

  • WU enters the match with a 19-3-1 record.  

  • The Ichabods defeated Emporia State 2-1 in the Central Region Championship on Friday to advance out of the third round.  

  • To get to the third round they began with a 1-0 2OT win over No. 8 Ouachita Baptist in the first round at a 3-2 2OT victory against No. 5 Central Missouri in the second.  

  • Washburn finished the regular season 15-2-1 and won the second MIAA Regular Season Championship in program history.  

  • The Ichabods went 9-1-1 in the MIAA with the only loss coming to Emporia State in the last match of the season.  

  • Washburn has set a new program record with 19 wins this season, breaking the pervious high set in 2006 and 2008 when WU won 15. 

  • The Ichabods went 11-6-2 in 2022 and finished sixth in the MIAA.  

  • Washburn will set a tie for its most matches played in a season at 24, the same as the 2008 season. This is the latest into the calendar year that they have played in matches.  

  • The Ichabods return 19 players from last seasons roster while adding two transfers and seven freshmen. 

HOW WE GOT HERE 

  • Washburn won its first ever Central Region Championship with a 2-1 victory over the No. 2 seed Emporia State on Friday.  

  • Khloe Schuckman scored both goals for the Ichabods with her first coming in the 37th minute and the second coming on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to break a 1-1 tie.  

  • Raegan Wells made two saves in the match playing all 90 minutes.  

  • Jordan Tenpas, Josie Boyle and Taylor Bockover each played the entire game on defense.  

  • Washburn won both of the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament in overtime in Yager Stadium.   

BLUE REPORT 

  • Khloe Schuckman leads Washburn in both points and goals with 27 and 11 respectively. She is also second on the Ichabods with five assists while leading with 60 shots on the year. Seven of her goals have gone for game winners including all three NCAA Tournament matches. She has played and started in 22 matches logging a total of 1,558 minutes.  

  • Ana Muruzabal is second on the Ichabods in goals with eight and and in points with 19. She is doing so off the bench in 743 minutes of total action. Fifteen of her 23 total shots have been on goal. 

  • Mackinly Rohn leads the Ichabods with seven assists on the year. She's also scored three goals to sit third on the team with 13 points. She has started all but two matches and logged 1,377 minutes as a freshman.  

  • Viviana Soto-Herrera has five goals and two assists on the year and is second on the Ichabods with 34 shots taken. She has stared all 22 matches she has appeared in and played 1,420 total minutes.  

  • Raegan Wells has made 62 saves this season in 2,085 minutes. She has 11 solo shutouts and combined with Hailey Beck and Alli Harrington to complete an twelfth. She has a .785 save percentage on the year with 148 shots faced. She has started all 23 matches.  

  • Aubrey Tanksley has scored five goals on the year on 27 shots. Four of the goals have been game winners. She has started three matches and played a total of 1,100 minutes and picked up two assists on the year.  

  • Taylor Bockover leads all Ichabod non-goalies in minutes with 1,672 this season. She has started all 23 matches on defense and helped as part of all 12 shutouts.  

  • Josie Boyle has started all 18 matches she has played in this season, she has logged 1,620 minutes with one goal. 

  • Jordan Tenpas has started all 18 matches on defense she has played this year, logging 1,590 minutes in that time with one assist. 

  • Riley Wells has three goals and three assists on the year. She has taken 16 total shots and has started all 23 matches while playing 1,251 minutes. 

  • Lakin Rold and Grace Peterson have each started all 23 matches this season, logging 1,547 and 1,337 minutes respectively. 

  • Jadyn Allen has three goals and two assists on the year, logging 864 minutes off the bench. 

  • Lindsey Maul missed five matches with injuries but has accumulated 1,137 minutes in the other matches with seven total starts and two goals with one game-winner.  

  • Belle Kennedy has started 22 matches playing 1,314 minutes, she is tied for third on the Ichabods with 27 shots and has three goals and one assist.  

  • Cloe Quintana has logged 1,144 minutes off the bench with one start and appeared in all 23 matches.  

  • All twenty-nine players on the Ichabod roster have appeared in at least one match this season. 


REGIONAL RECOGNITION 

  • Washburn had three players earn D2CCA All-Central Region recognition earlier in the week.  

  • Jordan Tenpas was a first-team selection as a defender, the first Ichabod to land on the first team since Lisa Fahey in 2008.  

  • Raegan Wells and Khloe Schuckman both landed on the second team as they earned the honors for the first times in their career.  

  • The Ichabods had not had a player on the regional team since 2013. Three selections marks the second most in a season in program history. 

  • Minutes into the match on Friday, it was announced by the United Soccer Coaches Assocation that head coach Davy Phillips and assistant coach Jessica Hillebert were named the 2023 Central Region Staff of the Year.  

  • It is the first regional award for both coaches.  


MILESTONE MARKERS 

  • Raegan Wells became the second Washburn player to log 2,000 minutes in a season and the first goalkeeper in program history on Friday.  

  • Khloe Schuckman became the second player in program history to score double digit goals in a season on Friday with her two goals.  

  • Belle Kennedy needs one more goal from 10 in her career.  

  • Riley Wells needs one more point to reach 20 in her career.  

  • Ana Muruzabal is one point away from 20 in her Ichabod career all coming this season.  


OPPONENT QUICK SCOUT 
Match #24 – Grand Valley State  

  • Grand Valley State enters the Elite Eight with a 14-3-6 record on the year 

  • The Lakers defeated Ashland 1-0 in the Midwest Region Championship 

  • Prior to that they won 3-0 over No. 6 McKendree in the first round and 2-1 over No. 7 Maryville in the second round  

  • Grand Valley State has won the Midwest Regional Championship 16 times in program history  

  • The Lakers went 8-1-5 in the GLIAC this season before losing in the semifinals of the conference tournament  

  • Katie Hultin is in her second season at the helm of the Grand Valley State soccer program 

  • In her first season the Lakers went 16-2-5, winning both the GLIAC regular season and conference tournament championships and advanced to the sweet sixteen  

  • Assistant coaches Mario Zuniga-Gil, Sam Tracey and TJ Ifaturoti round out the staff  

  • Grand Valley State averages 1.57 goals per match while taking 16.5 shots per contest, opponents score an average of 0.65 goals per match while taking 8.1 shots  

  • Taylor Reid leads the Lakers with 13 points on the year coming on five goals and three assists. She has played all 23 matches and logged 1,639 minutes 

  • Emma Chudik is tied for the team lead with five goals and has 10 total points in just 866 minutes of action with nine starts  

  • Daan Louwerse leads GVSU in minutes with 1,976 on the defensive end, she has one assist on the year  

  • Isabel Imes has 39 saves in 18 matches started in goal for the Lakers. She has a .780 save percentage with six solo shutouts 

  • Kacy Lauer has 11 points for Grand Valley State on four points and three assists  

  • The match for a trip to the final four will be the first between the Ichaobds and the Lakers  


LOOKING AHEAD 

  • With a win Washburn would face the winner of Gannon and Adelphi in the final four on Dec. 7 in Matthews, North Carolina. A loss would end the season.
