TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn soccer will play for its first National Championship in program history when they take on Point Loma University. The Ichabods will face the Sea Lions at 11 a.m. CST on Saturday, Dec. 9 in Matthews, North Carolina.
KICKOFF

Washburn soccer will be a part of the final match of the 2023 DII women's soccer season as they face Point Loma Nazarene University for the National Championship on Saturday.

The Ichabods will face the Sea Lions for the first time in program history at the Matthews Sportsplex on Dec. 9 at 11 a.m. CST.

Washburn makes its first national championship appearance in program history after a 1-0 win in the National Semifinals over Adelphi University on Thursday.

Point Loma is 16-3-1 on the year and will also play for its first ever National Championship after defeating Florida Tech 3-0 in the semifinals.
THE BIG DANCE

Washburn won the Central Region Championship for the first time in program history and has continued its run with a pair of 1-0 wins; over Grand Valley State in the quarterfinals and Adelphi in the semifinals.

After qualifying for the National Semifinals all four remaining teams were re-seeded with the Ichabods selected No. 3 and Point Loma as No. 4.

This is the third ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament for Washburn, and the first since the 2008 season.

BOD BREAKDOWN

WU enters the match with a 21-3-1 record.

They advance to the final four after a 2-1 win over Emporia State in the round of 16 and a 1-0 victory against Grand Valley State in the National Quarterfinals.

Washburn finished the regular season 15-2-1 and won the second MIAA Regular Season Championship in program history.

HOW WE GOT HERE

Washburn's NCAA Tournament run began with a 2OT victory over the No. 8 seed Ouachita Baptist on Nov. 17.

The Ichabods played and won a second straight overtime match on Nov. 19 as they came from behind to defeat No. 5 Central Missouri 3-2.

They continued to face MIAA teams, defeating Emporia State in the Central Region Championship match 2-1 on Dec. 1.

They advanced to the final four with a 1-0 win over Grand Valley State on Dec. 3 and repeated the same result in the National Semifinals with a 1-0 win over Adelphi on Dec. 7.

Khloe Schuckman has scored five goals in the tournament run with three going for game winners and two coming in overtime. She scored overtime goals in each of the first two matches.

Aubrey Tanksley scored a goal with two seconds remaining in regulation against Central Missouri to tie the match at two and keep the season alive.

Raegan Wells has played every minute of the tournament and recorded three shutouts. Jordan Tenpas has also played every minute of the NCAA Tournament on defense.

Grace Peterson scored the match winning goal against Grand Valley State in the 81st minute.

Mackinly Rohn scored the game winner in the 56th minute of the Final Four against Adelphi University.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Jordan Tenpas and Khloe Schuckman were both named USC All-Americans with Tenpas landing on the first team and Schuckman as a third team selection.

This is the first season that Washburn has ever had multiple players earn All-American honors in a season, and the duo are just the third and fourth players in program history to earn the honor.
