WICHITA, Kan. – The Washburn women's basketball team chipped away at a 12-point deficit to get within three late in the third quarter, but could get no closer as Newman pulled away and defeated the Ichabods, 74-62, on Wednesday evening.

The Ichabods (9-13, 5-11 MIAA) scored the first basket of the game on a layup by Emma Chapman, but that was their only lead of the quarter as the Jets (7-15, 4-13 MIAA) scored eight of the next 11 points to go up 8-5 midway through the quarter. Washburn fought back with a 6-2 run to level the score at 13 with just over a minute left in the period, but the Ichabods committed a shooting foul just before time expired and the Jets hit both free throws to take a 15-13 advantage into the second.

The teams took turns scoring back-and-forth and Washburn tied things up at 17 and 20 and held a 24-23 lead after Aubrey Dewey's successful layup after a steal with 5:18 to go in the half. The Ichabod offense fell into a lull after that point, though, as the Jets went on an 11-2 run to finish off the quarter, capped off by a buzzer-beating layup, to head to the locker room in front, 34-26. Newman finished the frame 7-of-12 from the field (58.3 percent) and 3-of-7 from deep while the Ichabods made 5-of-12 from the floor and just one three-pointer.
