TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn will put a bow on the 2022-23 regular season on Saturday with an afternoon contest at rival Emporia State. Tip-off against the Lady Hornets is set for 1:30 p.m.
OPENING TIP
- Saturday's game will mark the 111th all-time meeting between these programs.
- The Ichabods (11-16, 7-14 MIAA) are coming off a 71-56 loss on senior night against Missouri Southern on Thursday.
- The Lady Hornets are 13-14 (8-13 MIAA) and have lost their last three in a row. They lost by 10 to Pittsburg State on Thursday.

- Natalia Figueroa returned to the lineup on Thursday after sitting out the previous two games...she scored seven points against Missouri Southern.
- For the season, Figueroa has started 24 of the 25 games she's played and averages 8.6 ppg and has made a team-best 42 three-pointers.
- Macy Doebele is scoring 7.9 ppg to go with 4.7 rpg. She also leads the team with a 77.8 free throw percentage, which ranks ninth among MIAA players.
- Since returning to the starting lineup on Feb. 14, Doebele has gone 18-22 at the free throw line in four games.
- At forward, Emma Chapman adds 7.8 ppg and 4.4 rpg. She made 4-of-9 from the field against Missouri Southern for eight points.

HEAD COACH LORA WESTLING
- Former Washburn women's basketball student-athlete Lora Westling has returned to Topeka and is in her first season as head coach in 2022-23.
- Westling returns to her alma mater after six seasons at Western Colorado, where she compiled a record of 77-78 and led the team to back-to-back NCAA Tournament selections – the first two in program history.
- Her overall victories is second on the Western all-time list and her 63 RMAC wins is tied for second in program history.
- Prior to Western Colorado, Westling spent three seasons as the head coach at the Division III program, Illinois College.
- Before accepting the head job at Illinois College, Westling was the top assistant at Truman State from 2010-13.
- Westling's first full-time position came at University of Missouri-St. Louis where she was the top assistant from 2007-10.
- She got her start in coaching at Washburn, where she served as a graduate assistant for the women's basketball and women's soccer teams.
- Westling was a standout member of Washburn's women's basketball team from 2001-05 and helped the Lady Blues to the school's first NCAA Division II national championship in 2005.
- She is currently sixth in games played (132), sixth in career three-pointers made (144), 10th in assists (299), and 14th in three-point field goal percentage (.363).
- She also played one season of soccer for the Lady Blues.
WASHBURN ASSISTANT COACHES
- Coach Westling brought in a new coaching staff for her first season and chose J'nae Squires-Horton and Will Marchino as her assistants.
- Squires-Horton served as a graduate assistant at the University of Colorado Springs-Colorado.
- As a student-athlete, Squires-Horton was a three-year member of the MSU Denver basketball team and earned all-RMAC second team honors twice.
- Following her graduation at MSU Denver with a degree in Journalism, Squires-Horton played one season in Latvia with the Latvian Basketball League's SBK Liepaja/LSSS.
- Marchino spend the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Seward County Community College where he oversaw recruiting and scouting.
- Prior to his time in Liberal, Kansas, Marchino was an assistant coach for Grand View University.
- Before making the jump to the college ranks, Marchino was the varsity girls basketball head coach at Iowa Christian Academy.
- Marchino is a 2008 graduate from the University of Iowa where he received his degree in Health and Sports Studies.
WASHBURN'S LAST TIME OUT
Missouri Southern 71, Washburn 56 (Feb. 23, 2023)
TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn women's basketball team lost its final home game of the 2022-23 season to Missouri Southern on Thursday evening, 71-56.
Prior to the game, Washburn's three senior student-athletes, Emma Chapman, Macy Doebele, and Abby Oliver, as well as student manager, Noah Garber, were recognized on the court for their contributions to the Washburn women's basketball program.
The Ichabods (11-16, 7-14 MIAA) won the tip and started the game on a 7-2 run for an early lead. Missouri Southern (23-6, 15-6 MIAA) answered with a 7-2 run of its own to level the score at 9-all. Washburn reclaimed the lead with a 5-0 mini run, but the Lions closed out the last four minutes and 33 seconds on a 15-6 tear to go up, 24-20, at the end of the opening quarter. The Ichabods finished the frame shooting 53.3 percent from the field.
For the second-straight quarter, Gabi Artis got the scoring started with a three-pointer in the first 30 seconds to pull the Ichabods within one, 24-23. Both teams experienced a scoring drought as the next points weren't scored until Missouri Southern made a triple with 6:22 on the clock. The Lions scored four points in the last 18 seconds to take a 41-29 lead into the break.
The Lions maintained their lead for the remainder of the second half. Washburn trailed 59-46 at the start of the fourth quarter, but put together a 9-2 run to pull within six, 61-55, midway through the frame. Washburn would get no closer, though, as Missouri Southern finished off the final four and a half minutes with a 10-1 run to win by 15.
Missouri Southern finished the evening shooting 44.8 percent from the field while Washburn shot 39.0 percent. From three-point range, the Ichabods made 6-of-16 and the Lions made 3-of-12. Missouri Southern had a resounding advantage at the free throw line, going 16-of-18, while Washburn was 4-of-9 at the charity stripe. The Ichabods outrebounded the Lions, 36-34. MSSU forced 20 turnovers and turned those into 31 points.
Artis led the Ichabods with 14 points and made 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Aubree Dewey also added double-digits with 10 points and led the team with nine rebounds. Doebele chipped in nine points and seven boards.
Three from Missouri Southern finished in double-figures, led by Mia Topping's 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting and a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line.
ABOUT THE EMPORIA STATE LADY HORNETS
- Emporia State started out the season 7-1, but hit an eight-game losing skid after that and now hold a record of 13-14 (8-13 MIAA).
- The Lady Hornets average 67.5 ppg with a 38.3 field goal percentage.
- The offense is led by Tre'Zure Jobe, who is ranked fourth in the nation in scoring at 22.0 ppg and has a 44.9 field goal percentage...she has scored double-digit points in every game except one - and that was a nine point game back on Nov. 26.
- She is also seventh in DII in steals per game with 3.04 spg, third in the MIAA with a 36.2 three-point field goal percentage, and fourth in the league in total triples made with 55.
- Victoria Price also contributes double-figure scoring with 10.4 ppg.
- Ehlaina Hartman leads the team with 5.0 rpg and adds 8.0 ppg.
HEAD COACH TOBY WYNN
- Toby Wynn is in his fifth season with the Lady Hornets and has compiled a record of 79-37 while leading ESU to the NCAA Tournament in his first three seasons.
- Before joining ESU, Wynn was the head coach at Seward Community College (Liberal, Kan.) for 13 seasons where he went 349-84.
- Wynn played one season of basketball at Northwestern Oklahoma State before transferring to Oklahoma State where he earned his Bachelor's in Business Education.
- Wynn is 5-4 against the Ichabods.
SERIES WITH EMPORIA STATE
- Washburn has played Emporia State more than any other team in its history.
- The first-ever meeting between these two programs was on Dec. 12, 1974 in Topeka ... ESU won, 73-52.
- The Lady Hornets lead the all-time series, 61-49.
- When playing in Emporia, Washburn is 18-29.

WASHBURN'S LAST TIME AGAINST MISSOURI SOUTHERN
Emporia State 58, Washburn 43 (Dec. 3, 2022)
TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn women's basketball team held a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but a cold-shooting second and third quarter proved costly for the Ichabods as they lost to Emporia State on Saturday afternoon, 58-43.
Washburn (3-4, 0-2 MIAA) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead to begin the game with Emma Chapman making a pair of layups during the opening run. Emporia State (5-1, 1-0 MIAA) ended the first quarter on a 5-0 scoring run to trim the deficit to 9-8.
The Lady Hornets took their first lead of the game 47 seconds into the second quarter with a jumper by Tre'Zure Jobe. Washburn went back in front with five unanswered points, but Emporia State rattled off a 10-0 run in a three minute, 22 second time span to go up, 20-14. Chapman converted on an old-fashioned three-point play, but the Lady Hornets hit a jumper with 22 seconds left to take a 22-17 lead into the break.
In the third quarter, the Emporia State offense outscored Washburn, 23-7, and shot 58.33 percent from the field (7-of-12) and went 8-of-11 from the free throw line and held the Ichabods to just 2-of-16 from the floor (12.5 percent) and 1-of-2 at the charity stripe. Emporia State held a 45-24 lead to going into the fourth quarter.
Washburn outscored Emporia State in the final quarter, 19-13, and had a 7-0 run and a 9-2 run in the frame, but it was not enough as the Ichabods lost the contest by double-digits.
Emporia State finished the afternoon shooting 35.3 percent from the field and limited Washburn to 28.1 percent shooting. Both teams made five three-pointers and Washburn had just one more attempt from beyond the arc than Emporia State. The Lady Hornets made 21 trips to the free throw line and successfully made 17 of those charity shots while the Ichabods went 6-of-11. WU had one more rebound than ESU, 39-38.
Natalia Figueroa led Washburn with 10 points and added nine rebounds. Chapman was close behind with nine points and Yiibari Nwidadah recorded a season-high in points with eight and in rebounds, grabbing a team-best 10 boards.
Jobe led Emporia State with 18 points and Stevie Stinchcomb chipped in 14 points, shooting 4-of-5 from the field with two three-pointers and made 4-for-4 at the free throw line.

- Washburn women's basketball is 982-477-1 (.677) all-time and are in the 54th year of the program's history.
