MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Washburn starter
Casey Steward carried a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings and struck out a career-high 12 batters, but the Ichabods couldn't hold on as Barry scored five runs in the eighth to win, 6-3, on Thursday evening. The Ichabods will continue play in Florida on Friday evening at No. 22-ranked Nova Southeastern.
Washburn (1-4) wasted little time getting on the board as
Cal Watkins got the game started with a seven pitch walk and advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt. On a 3-2 count,
Trey Adams landed a single to right field to bring in Watkins for the first run of the game.
In the second inning,
Otto Jones legged out an infield single and then moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Caden Bressler. Another error by Barry (3-0) allowed
Connor Scott to reach base and Watkins singled through the left side to load the bases for Adams, who reached on a fielder's choice and Jones was able to safely make it home.
The Ichabods extended their lead in the fourth as Scott hit a one out solo home run to make it 3-0.
Steward had a dominant start and did not allow a runner past second until the bottom of the sixth and retired the side in order in the third and fourth innings. Barry hit a one out single and the runner swiped second and advanced to third on an error. The Buccaneers spoiled the shutout with a groundout RBI.
In the bottom of the eighth, Barry took its first lead of the game with a three-run home run. The Buccaneers added two more runs on a bases loaded walk and a bases loaded sacrifice bunt to go up, 6-3.
The Ichabods drew two walks in the top of the ninth, but were unable to get a run across as the Buccaneers got all three outs of the frame on strikeouts.
Watkins and Jones each went 2-4 and scored one run. Adams also had two hits and drove in two runs.
Steward finished his outing, going 5 2/3 innings with a career-high strikeouts and allowed just one unearned run on two hits and two walks.
