No. 15 Ichabods on the road for battles with Griffons and Bearcats

BLUE NOTES
• The No. 15-ranked Washburn Ichabod softball team will hit the road for a pair of doubleheaders starting on Friday at Missouri Western followed by a twinbill at Northwest Missouri the next day.
• The Ichabods (27-5, 6-2 MIAA) are coming off two doubleheader sweeps over Lincoln and Central Missouri last weekend at Gahnstrom Field.
• Brenda Holaday is in her seventh season as the Ichabod softball head coach recording a 205-121 overall record going 93-45 in MIAA contests leading the Ichabods to their first two MIAA Regular Season titles (2018, 2022), and NCAA Central Regional berths in those years as well, the fourth and fifth in school history.
• The Ichabods finished the 2022 season with a 45-15 mark going 24-2 in the MIAA winning their fourth MIAA regular season title while earning an at-large bid for their fifth NCAA postseason tournament with a runner-up finish at the MIAA Championship Tournament.
• Washburn was tabbed second in the MIAA Preseason Coaches poll behind the defending NCAA Division II Champion Rogers State, who finished second in the MIAA regular season standings and topped the Ichabods in the MIAA Tournament Championship game.
• In 2022, the Ichabods recorded their first 40-win season since 2002 when the Ichabods went 48-11 giving the Ichabods four seasons with at least 40 wins - 41 (1999), 48 (2002) and 50 (1986) and 2022's 45 wins.

ICHABOD BITS
• Marrit Mead is seventh in the nation in hits with 48.
• Jaycee Ginter is second in the nation with 19 wins in the circle, she is third in strikeouts with 174. Ginter also leads the nation in pitching appearances with 29. On the active career charts, Ginter is 9th in strikeouts with 564.
• As a team the Ichabods are 11th in fielding percentage (.974), 12th in W/L percentage (.844) and 13th in WHIP (1.07).
• The Ichabods have gone 6-0 when hitting at least one home run
• This season the Ichabods have outscored opponents in every inning except the third (19 to 18) and the seventh (10 to 4). Overall Washburn has outscored opponents 165 to 70.
• When Washburn scores first they are 15-3
• When the Ichabods lead after the fourth inning they are 22-0 and 18-0 when leading after the fifth inning and 20-0 when leading after the sixth inning.

THE WEEK THAT WAS
• The Ichabods were 4-0 after their doubleheader sweeps over Lincoln and Central Missouri.
• Hadley Kerschen and Jaycee Ginter each hit .500 during the week with Kerschen driving in a team-high 5 RBI.
• Marrit Mead and Kerschen each had six hits to lead the team.
• For the seventh time in her Ichabod career and third time this season, Ginter was named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 with a 0.00 earned run average in four appearances.

LAST TIME OUT
TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 21-ranked Washburn Ichabods won two games on Saturday by scores of 2-1 wins including a walk-off in the opener as the home squad topped Central Missouri in MIAA play at Gahnstrom Field.
Game 1 – WU 2, UCM 1
The Ichabods struck first in their second at bat of the day when Jaden LaBarge started the inning with a ground-rule double down the left field line and then came around to score on a single by Autymn Schreiner on a single up the middle.
Neither team would score until the Jennies pushed an unearned run across the plate with two outs tying the score at 1-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Schreiner doubled after a nine-pitch at bat to lead off the inning and after a sac bunt by Jenna Moore moving Gracie Gallagher, who entered as a pinch runner, to third, Hadley Kerschen singled to left center sending the winning run home for the 2-1 win.
Jaycee Ginter went the distance striking out six scattering three his in the win improving to 18-2 on the season. Paige Robbins and Schreiner each had two hits for the Ichabods.
Game 2 – WU 2, UCM 1
For the first time of the day, the Jennies (18-11, 4-4 MIAA) had the lead over the Ichabods (27-5, 6-2 MIAA) when they took a 1-0 lead in the third inning scoring with two outs.
Washburn jumped back in front in the fourth inning when Ginter led off the frame with a single and after Allison Hemsath entered as a pinch runner, Marrit Mead doubled down the line sending Hemsath to third. With two outs, Erin Boles came up and singled to right field scoring both Hemsath and Mead as the Ichabods gained the 2-1 lead.
Ginter returned to the game in the circle to pitch the final three innings striking out five facing 12 batters allowing two hits and no runs earning her 19th win of the season.
The Jennies threatened in the top of the seventh moving runners to second and third, but Ginter retired the side with a strikeout and an infield pop out to end the game.
The Ichabods were limited to five hits with Robbins, Ginter, Mead, Boles and Kimi Patterson recording the base knocks. 
 
OPPONENT QUICK SCOUT
MISSOURI WESTERN
• The Griffons are 22-9 and 4-4 in MIAA play after splitting a non-conference doubleheader with Illinois-Spring field on Tuesday night.
• The Griffons are 10-4 in home games this season.
• The Ichabods are 53-51 all-time against the Griffons.
• Washburn has won the last five in a row against Missouri Western.
 
NORTHWEST MISSOURI
• The Bearcats are 17-13 this season overall and 3-5 in the MIAA entering a March 29th doubleheader with William Jewell in Liberty.
• The Bearcats will face Emporia State on March 31 before facing the Ichabods the following day.
• In MIAA games, the Jennies swept Pittsburg State and were swept by Missouri Southern.
• The Ichabods lead the all-time series with the Bearcats 58-36 after sweeping a doubleheader last season on April 2 in Topeka.
 
HEAD COACH BRENDA HOLADAY
• is 205-121 in her seventh season as the Ichabod head softball coach.
• in six seasons under Holaday, Washburn has had 29 all-MIAA picks, one MIAA player of the year, one MIAA Pitcher of the Year, two MIAA Freshmen of the year and 14 all-region selections and five All-American picks.
• coached 19 seasons at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka compiling a 351-93 record.
• led the Junior Blues to three 6A state championships as well as winning 14 league championships earning 16 6A state tournament berths, five second-place state finishes and three third-place state finishes and was inducted into the Washburn Rural High School Hall of Fame in 2018.
• was named the Centennial League Coach of the Year and City Coach of the Year nine different times earning the Midwest Sectional Coach of the Year in 2011 and the 6A Kansas Coach of the year two times in 2008 and 2011 and was named the overall Kansas Coach of the Year in 2011.
• while at Washburn Rural, she coached more than 40 players who have gone on to play college softball including three at the NCAA Division I level including former Ichabod head softball coach Lisa Carey, the winningest coach by wins in program history.

WASHBURN ICHABOD SOFTBALL HISTORY
• The Ichabods are 1,274-942-1 in their 53rd year of softball.
• The Ichabods have made five NCAA Tournament appearances (1999, 2006, 2008, 2018, 2022).
• Washburn won the 2002, 2018 and 2022 regular season MIAA titles.

The Ichabods will return home on April 7 hosting Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney the following day.
