Washburn on the road for final time in regular season with trip to Oklahoma

BLUE NOTES
• The Washburn Ichabod softball team will wrap up its final weekend on the road in the regular season with a trip to Oklahoma facing Northeastern State and Rogers State starting Friday in Tahlequah with a doubleheader against Rogers State the following day in Claremore.
• The Ichabods (33-11, 12-8 MIAA) went 2-2 last weekend after being swept by Missouri Southern then sweeping Pittsburg State the next day.
Brenda Holaday is in her seventh season as the Ichabod softball head coach recording a 211-127 overall record going 101-49 in MIAA contests leading the Ichabods to their first two MIAA Regular Season titles (2018, 2022), and NCAA Central Regional berths in those years as well, the fourth and fifth in school history.
• With her 211 wins at Washburn, Holaday has passed Kim Newbern for second on the all-time wins chart. Lisa Carey is the all-time winningest coach by victories at 256.
• The Ichabods have recorded their 19th, 30-win season in program history and their third under Holaday.
• The Ichabods finished the 2022 season with a 45-15 mark going 24-2 in the MIAA winning their third MIAA regular season title while earning an at-large bid for their fifth NCAA postseason tournament with a runner-up finish at the MIAA Championship Tournament.
• Washburn was tabbed second in the MIAA Preseason Coaches poll behind the defending NCAA Division II Champion Rogers State, who finished second in the MIAA regular season standings and topped the Ichabods in the MIAA Tournament Championship game.
• In 2022, the Ichabods recorded their first 40-win season since 2002 when the Ichabods went 48-11 giving the Ichabods four seasons with at least 40 wins - 41 (1999), 48 (2002) and 50 (1986) and 2022's 45 wins.

ICHABOD BITS
Marrit Mead is 16th in the nation in hits with 63 while her hit total is second in the MIAA and her batting average of .447 is third while her 25 stolen bases is fourth in the conference rankings.
Jaycee Ginter is fourth in the nation with 22 wins in the circle while leading the MIAA in victories. She is fifth in strikeouts in the nation with 2119. Ginter is second in the nation in pitching appearances with 37. On the active career charts, Ginter is 10th in strikeouts with 609.
• The Ichabods have gone 11-2 when hitting at least one home run and 28-2 when scoring at least three runs.
• This season the Ichabods have outscored opponents in every inning except the seventh (16 to 14). Overall Washburn has outscored opponents 215 to 107 this season.
• When Washburn scores first they are 24-5 and 20-4 when they score in the first inning.
• When the Ichabods lead after the fourth inning they are 25-2 and 21-0 when leading after the fifth inning and 24-0 when leading after the sixth inning.

THE WEEK THAT WAS
• The Ichabods were 2-2 last week after being swept at Missouri Southern in a pair of 3-1 games and the bouncing back to sweep Pittsburg State winning 10-5 and 6-3.
Paige Robbins led the team with a .444 batting average (4 for 9) and Marrit Mead and Ellington Hogle were both 6 for 14 for a .429 batting average.
Marrit Mead was 2 for 2 in stolen bases and scored a team-high four runs.
• The Ichabods hit .303 as a team and recorded a 3.77 ERA compared to their opponents .348 batting average and 4.25 ERA.
Sadie Walker was 1-1 in the circle with a 1.85 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings pitched.

LAST TIME OUT
PITTSBURG, Kan. – The No. 20 Washburn Ichabods bounced back with a doubleheader sweep over Pittsburg State winning 10-5 and 6-3 over the Gorillas on Saturday on the road.
Game 1 – WU 10, PSU 5
The Washburn Ichabods scored in six of the seven innings of the game holding off a late charge by the Gorillas in the 10-5 win pounding out 14 hits in the win.
Washburn's first run came in the top of the first when Marrit Mead started the game off with a single and then came around to score on a single by Jaycee Ginter as the Ichabods went up 1-0.
The Ichabods added two more in the top of the second when Kaylee Wagner walked and after a triple by Mead scored from second. Ellington Hogle then collected a single sending Mead home as Washburn went up 3-0.
After a scoreless third, Mead doubled to center scoring Autymn Schreiner who had a one-out double as the Ichabods boosted the lead to 4-0.
In the fifth, Washburn's Jaden LaBarge singled up the middle scoring Paige Robbins as Washburn increased its lead to 5-0. Pittsburg State came back with a solo run in the fifth, but Washburn added two more in the top of the sixth on a two-out single by Erin Boles that drove in Ginter and Hadley Kerschen.
Pitt State (23-17, 8-10 MIAA) added three in the seventh as Sheyenne Cheek relieved starter Ginter and got of the bases-loaded jam to pick up the save. Washburn stretched its lead to 10-3 with three runs in the top of the seventh on a sac fly by Ellington Hogle scoring Gracie Gallagher who entered as a pinch runner for Wagner who started out the inning with a double. Ginter then drove in two of her own with a single to center scoring both Mead and Schriener.
The Gorillas added two more in the seventh, but would get no closer.
Ginter moved to 22-6 in the circle with the win while driving in three with two hits. Mead was 3 for 4 with three runs scored with a single, double and a triple driving in two. Hogle and Boles also had 2 RBI in the opener.
Game 2 – WU 6, PSU 3
For the second game in a row, the Ichabods jumped on the board first with a solo run in the top of the first when LaBarge drove in Mead who led off the game with a walk and then stole second advancing to third on a single by Hadley Kerschen.
Neither team scored until the third when Washburn moved up to a 3-0 lead when Paige Robbins singled driving in both Ginter and Kerschen. In the top of the fifth, Schreiner's double down the right field line to score Boles and Robbins and after Hogle walked, Kerschen  singled as the Ichabods pushed the lead to 6-0.
The Gorillas scored three runs in the seventh cutting the lead in half at 6-3 with five hits, but starter Sadie Walker re-entered the game and pitched the final out for the win.
Kerschen had three hits in the second game as the Ichabods finished with 12 in the game. LaBarge had two hits as everyone in the Ichabod starting batting line up had at least one hit.
Walker tossed 5 1/3 innings striking out six not allowing a run improving to 6-4 on the season 
 
OPPONENT QUICK SCOUT
NORTHEASTERN STATE
• The RiverHawks are 25-18 overall and 7-11 in the MIAA entering the weekend.
• NSU has won its last three games are they are 13-6 in home games this season.
• The series is tied 18-18 with the Ichabods winning the last three games.
 
ROGERS STATE
• The defending NCAA D2 champions are 35-8 this season after sweeping Missouri S&T on Tuesday in Rolla winning 9-0 and 6-0.
• RSU is 13-3 in home games this year.
• Central Oklahoma swept Rogers State on April 15 in its last MIAA action.
• The Hillcats will face Emporia State on April 21 before facing the Ichabods the following day.
• The Hillcats lead the series 6-4 and have won the last two meetings coming in the MIAA Tournament last season.
 
HEAD COACH BRENDA HOLADAY
• is 211-127 in her seventh season as the Ichabod head softball coach.
• in six seasons under Holaday, Washburn has had 29 all-MIAA picks, one MIAA player of the year, one MIAA Pitcher of the Year, two MIAA Freshmen of the year and 14 all-region selections and five All-American picks.
• coached 19 seasons at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka compiling a 351-93 record.
• led the Junior Blues to three 6A state championships as well as winning 14 league championships earning 16 6A state tournament berths, five second-place state finishes and three third-place state finishes and was inducted into the Washburn Rural High School Hall of Fame in 2018.
• was named the Centennial League Coach of the Year and City Coach of the Year nine different times earning the Midwest Sectional Coach of the Year in 2011 and the 6A Kansas Coach of the year two times in 2008 and 2011 and was named the overall Kansas Coach of the Year in 2011.
• while at Washburn Rural, she coached more than 40 players who have gone on to play college softball including three at the NCAA Division I level including former Ichabod head softball coach Lisa Carey, the winningest coach by wins in program history.

WASHBURN ICHABOD SOFTBALL HISTORY
• The Ichabods are 1,278-946-1 in their 53rd year of softball.
• The Ichabods have made five NCAA Tournament appearances (1999, 2006, 2008, 2018, 2022).
• Washburn won the 2002, 2018 and 2022 regular season MIAA titles.
 
UP NEXT
The Ichabods will host Rockhurst in a non-conference doubleheader on April 26 before wrapping up the regular season on senior day on April 29 hosting Emporia State.
