AUSTIN, Texas –
Maja Jung was named to the 2023 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Women's Tennis Academic All-America Third Team, as announced by the organization.
She is one of 19 selected across the nation, with just two from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) to be honored in the inaugural CSC women's tennis specific list. Jung becomes the third Washburn tennis student-athlete to earn academic All-America honors after Jannica Beam (1992 & 1993) and Debbie Dumas (1992).
Jung completed her junior season as an ITA All-American in both singles and doubles. She finished ranked No. 17 in singles after going 23-9 playing primarily at the No. 2 position where she went 15-6 and earned All-MIAA first team honors. Jung was 3-2 against nationally ranked opponents, including a three-set win over the No. 9-ranked singles player from No. 5 Flagler in the NCAA National Quarterfinal match.
Jung and doubles partner
Sonia Smagina closed out the season ranked fifth in all of Division II. The duo received an All-MIAA first team selection at No. 1 doubles and compiled a record of 19-3 at the top of the lineup while also going undefeated in conference play. They won nine of their last 10 matches they played together and went 6-3 against nationally ranked opponents.
So far in her time as an Ichabod, Jung has earned a place on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll twice and is also a two-time MIAA Scholar Athlete. She is majoring in sport management and holds a 3.76 grade point average.
Washburn student-athletes have now accumulated 41 Academic All-America awards since joining the NCAA in 1989-90.
