TEMPE, Ariz. – Washburn women's tennis collected three ITA All-American awards today as both
Sonia Smagina and
Maja Jung earned All-America honors in singles and the duo also achieved All-America status together in doubles.
To be named an ITA All-American, student-athletes must finish in the top-20 in singles and in the top-10 in doubles in the final ITA rankings of the season.
In the final set of the ITA singles rankings, Smagina checked in at No. 2 overall. The MIAA and ITA Central Region Player of the Year finished her season with the Ichabods with a singles record of 30-3 while going 21-2 at the No. 1 spot and had a perfect 7-0 mark in conference play. Against nationally ranked opponents, she was 10-2 and she moved up to the No. 1-ranked singles player in Division II on March 21.
Also finishing ranked in the top-20 in singles was junior Jung at No. 17. She went 23-9 in singles action playing primarily at the No. 2 position where she went 15-6 and earned All-MIAA first team honors. Jung was 3-2 against nationally ranked opponents, including a three-set win over the No. 9-ranked singles player from No. 5 Flagler in the NCAA National Quarterfinal match. Jung was also recently named an Academic All-American by the College Sports Communicators organization.
Smagina and Jung were also doubles partners during the season and finished fifth in the final ITA doubles rankings. The duo received an All-MIAA first team selection at No. 1 doubles and compiled a record of 19-3 at the top of the lineup while also going undefeated in conference play. They won nine of their last 10 matches they played together and went 6-3 against nationally ranked opponents.
The Washburn women's team finished the 2022-23 season with an overall record of 18-7 (6-2 MIAA), captured the MIAA Tournament championship title, and advanced all the way to the NCAA National Quarterfinal match for the first time in program history.
