Washburn soccer begins 2023 season with two road matches in St. Louis

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn Ichabod soccer kicks off the 2023 season with two road matches in St. Louis, Mo. On Friday, Sep. 1 Washburn will face Drury with a 5 p.m. first kick and on Sunday the Ichabods face the University of Missouri - St. Louis beginning at noon. 

KICKOFF

  • Washburn Ichabod soccer begins the 2023 season with road matches against Drury University of the University of Missouri - St. Louis.
  • Washburn will take on the Panthers at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sep. 1 and the Tritons at noon on Sunday, Sep. 3. 

BOD BREAKDOWN

  • Washburn begins the 2023 season after going 11-6-2 in 2022 and finishing sixth in the MIAA. 
  • Drury went 6-3-8 last season and 3-2-7 in the GLVC before losing in the Quarterfinals of the conference tournament. They will open the season against the Ichabods. 
  • Missouri - St. Louis was 6-7-5 in 2022 with a 3-4-5 record in the GLVC. The Tritons advanced to the semifinals of the GLVC tournament before losing. They take on Northwest Missouri State on Sep. 1 before taking on Washburn. 
  • The Ichabods were picked sixth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll. 
  • Washburn returns 19 players from last seasons roster while adding two transfers and seven freshmen.

BACK AGAIN - 2023 RETURNERS

  • Raegan Wells returns for her fifth season as an Ichabod. In 2022 she started all 19 games playing every minute in goal recording 68 saves with a 77.3 save percentage on her way to earning All-MIAA honorable mention honors.  
  • Riley Painter rounds out the senior class, she comes off a campaign where she saw action in 18 matches playing 397 total minutes taking three shots. 
  • Khloe Schuckman leads a class of 11 juniors, last season Schuckman earned All-MIAA first team honors leading Washburn with 19 points on eight goals and three assists. She recorded the first hat trick for Washburn since 2009 and logged 1,429 minutes. 
  • Riley Wells joins Schuckman as a returning junior forward. Wells had three goals last season and tied a team high with three assists. She started all 17 matches she played in. 
  • Viviana Soto-Herrera enters her junior season coming off an All-MIAA honorable mention nod. She logged 1,310 minutes in the midfield last season scoring two goals with two assists.
  • Cloe Quintana will also enter her junior season in the midfield. In 2022 she started and played all 19 games totaling 1,382 minutes, the third most among returners. 
  • Jadyn Allen appeared in 19 matches making three starts last season scoring one goal with one assists, she adds to the list of returning junior midfielders. 
  • Taylor Bockover logged 1,072 minutes as a defender her sophomore season playing in 15 matches with 14 starts as she returns for a junior season. 
  • Katie Kamies and Ana Muruzabal both return as junior midfielders, Kamies appeared in one match while Muruzabal made five appearences both as transfers. 
  • Josie Boyle will be a junior after playing in 11 matches making one start for 315 minutes in 2022. 
  • Alli Harrington did not appear in a match in goal last season and will be a junior in 2023. 
  • Seven sophomores return led by Belle Kennedy who was an All-MIAA third team selection with six goals from the midfield. She started all 16 matches she appeared in. Hunter McWilliams joins her in the midfield she played in three matches taking three total shots in 69 minutes of action.
  • Lakin Rold, Londyn Furnish, Brooke Powell, Shandon Carr and Sydney Achilles all return as sophomore defenders in 2023. Rold leads all returning Ichabods in minutes last season with 1,528 she started all 19 games and was fourth on the team with 24 shots. Furnish played in 16 matches making five starts and scoring one goal. Powell appeared in 17 matches totaling 384 minutes. Carr scored one goal in 217 minutes of action with 13 matches played. Achilles appeared in five matches for a total of 58 minutes with one goal scored. 

NEW FACES

  • Washburn adds two transfers and eight freshmen for 2023. Jordan Tenpas will be a junior defender after playing three seasons for Minot State where she started and played in 48 career games with one goal. Aubrey Tanksley will be a sophomore after playing one season at Weber State where she appeared in 11 games for 211 total minutes.  
  • Seven freshmen appear on the Ichabod roster in 2023, Hailey Beck (Topeka, Kan.) joins Washburn as a goalkeeper, Lindsey Maul (Wichita, Kan.), Rilyn Snyder (Aurora, Colo.), and Kate Widler (Olathe, Kan.) will all join the crop of defenders. Grace Peterson (Lincoln, Neb.) and Presslee Amick (Norman, Okla.) will play in the midfield while Kylie Hinrichs (Elkhorn, Neb.) and Mackinly Rohn (Topeka, Kan.) will be forwards. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • Washburn lost to Northwest Missouri State 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Championship Tournament. Khloe Schuckman took seven of the 10 shots for the Ichabods and Raegan Wells made 10 saves in the match. 

MILESTONE MARKERS

  • Khloe Schuckman is eight points away from 40 career points and six goals away from 20 in her career 
  • Raegan Wells needs 21 more saves for 300 in her career 
  • Belle Kennedy is four goals away from 10 career goals 

LOOKING AHEAD

  • Washburn will play its home opener on Friday Sep. 8 against Southwest Minnesota State at 6 p.m. They host Wayne State College Sep. 10.
  • The Ichabods open up MIAA play on Sep. 15 on the road against Emporia State 
  • The MIAA Championship Tournament begins on Friday, Nov. 3 with the quarterfinals taking place on campus sites of top-4 seeds

Match #1 - @ Drury University

  • Drury is led by Justin Olson in his fourth season as head coach
  • The Panthers went 6-3-8 last season and 3-2-7 in the GLVC
  • Drury lost in the first round of the GLVC Tournament to Maryville
  • The Panthers return 22 players from last seasons roster while adding 10 freshmen and two transfers 
  • Elsa Gonzales and Tara Simon both return as the leading goal scorers and points leaders for Drury last season with four goals and nine points each. 
  • Katilin Knetzke played every minute in goal last season recording 65 saves and allowing only nine goals on the year. 
  • The Panthers outscored opponents 17-9 in 2022, holding opponents to only 8.9 shots per game. 
  • Kourtney Tucker and Annalise Hamel are the leading returners each having two assists in 2022. 
  • Assistant coach Melissa Kuhar and graduate assistant Josh Lewis-Evans round out the coaching staff 
  • Washburn is 0-1 all-time against Drury. The one match was a 1-0 loss in Springfield, Mo. on Aug. 31, 2012. 

Match #2 - University of Missouri - St. Louis

  • The Tritons are led by Maddi Moon in her fourth season. 
  • UMSL went 6-7-5 last season and 3-4-5 in the GLVC 
  • The Triton lost in the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament to Illinois Springfield
  • UMSL brings back 13 players from 2022 and adds 11 freshmen and three transfers
  • Candice Parziani leads all returners with three goals and 10 points in 2022
  • Karley Kinzinger returns after notching three assists last season
  • Mary Kate Neal leads returning goalkeepers with 20 saves in eight matches played last season 
  • The Tritons outscored opponents 26-25 last season while averaging 13.4 shots per game compared to only allowing 10.4
  • Assistant coaches Annie McBride, Olivia Silverman and Taylor Imming round out the teams coaching staff 
  • Washburn and UMSL have played only one time which was a 2-1 win on Sep. 9, 2021 in St. Louis, Mo.
