Washburn hosts Mustangs on Friday and Wildcats on Sunday to open 2023 home slate

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn Ichabod soccer plays its first matches of 2023 at Yager Stadium hosting Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Sep. 8 at 6 p.m. and Wayne State College on Sunday, Sep. 10 with a 1 p.m. kickoff. 

KICKOFF

  • Washburn Ichabod soccer opens up its 2023 home slate of matches with two non-conference matchups against Southwest Minnesota State and Wayne State College. 
  • Washburn will take on the Mustangs at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sep. 8 and the Wildcats at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sep. 10. 

BOD BREAKDOWN

  • Washburn is 1-1-0 so far in the 2023 season. 
  • The Ichabods went 11-6-2 in 2022 and finished sixth in the MIAA. 
  • Washburn has won its last three home openers. 
  • The Ichabods were picked sixth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll. 
  • Washburn returns 19 players from last seasons roster while adding two transfers and seven freshmen.

A LOOK AT LAST WEEK

  • Washburn went 1-1 last week with a season opening 2-0 neutral field victory over Drury and a 3-1 decision on the road against the Univeristy of Missouri - St. Louis. 
  • The Ichabods outshot the Panthers 17-10 in the first game of the season, with nine shots going on goal. 
  • Drury was only able to manage two shots on goal against the Ichabods, and the Tritons were only on target for four attempts 
  • The Ichabods held a lead in each game, and did not trail for the first 145 minutes of action
  • After the week the Ichabods now 1-0 in neutral contests and 0-1 on the road. 

STACKING STATS

  • Washburn is third in the MIAA and 91st among 247 ranked teams averaging six shots on goal per contest. 
  • The Ichabods are tied for 47th among 178 teams averaging 1.5 assists per game, its tied for first among MIAA teams.
  • Khloe Schuckman is tied for 42nd nationally averaging 2.5 points per game and stands all alone at first in the MIAA 
  • Belle Kennedy is tied for 37th nationally with 2.5 shots on goal per game, good for second in the conference 

BLUE REPORT

  • Khloe Schuckman leads the Ichabods in points, goals and shots. She has scored a goal in both games this season with an assist in the first. She has two shots on goal this season, both going for goals. 
  • Viviana Soto-Herrera scored the other goal of the weekend for Washburn. She has four total shots on the year, third most on the team, in 154 minutes. She has scored a goal in the season opener two years in a row. 
  • Lakin Rold and Jordan Tenpas have both played all 180 minutes of action on defense for Washburn, helping secure one shutout. 
  • Rold secured her first career assist and point on Sunday against the Tritons
  • Raegan Wells also logged all 180 possible minutes over the weekend, helping secure one shutout. It's the third straight season that Wells has been in goal for a season-opening shutout effort. 
  • Lindsey Maul and Grace Peterson started both games as true freshmen, with maul playing 162 minutes over the weekend, fifth most on the team. 
  • Fellow freshman Mackinly Rohn joined them in the starting lineup for the season opener, she logged 103 minutes in her first collegiate games.
  • Riley Wells netted her first assist of the season against Missouri - St. Louis, and has taken one shot in 129 minutes. 
  • Belle Kennedy is tied with Schuckman with seven shots per game to lead the Ichabods. Kennedy's five shots on goal are tops on the Ichabods.
  • Aubrey Tanksley has taken two shots with both going on goal in her first two matches at Washburn. She recorded her first start against the Tritons. 
  • Twenty players have made appearences so far for Washburn, with 18 playing in both contests. 
  • The freshman class combined to play 420 minutes in the opening weekend for the Ichabods. 

MILESTONE MARKERS

  • Khloe Schuckman is three points away from 40 career points and six goals away from 20 in her career 
  • Raegan Wells needs 18 more saves for 300 in her career 
  • Belle Kennedy is four goals away from 10 career goals 
  • Head coach Davy Phillips is five wins away from 50 at Washburn

LOOKING AHEAD

  • Washburn will head on the road to face Emporia State and Nebraska-Kearney next weekend in non-conference contests. 
  • The Ichabods first official MIAA match will be Sunday, Sep. 24 at home against the Lopers. 
  • The MIAA Championship Tournament begins on Friday, Nov. 3 with the quarterfinals taking place on campus sites of top-4 seeds 


OPPONENT QUICK SCOUT
Match #3 - vs Southwest Minneosta State

  • SMSU is led by Clay Glasgow in his second season as head coach
  • The Mustangs are 0-2 this season coming off a 3-0 loss to Central Missouri last Sunday. 
  • SMSU was 3-8-7 last season overall and west 3-8-4 in the NSIC
  • Alyson Gallagher has scored the only goal of the season thus far for the Mustangs, she has taken one shot. 
  • Selena Prolic assisted on the goal and has played 124 minutes with one shot on goal of her own. 
  • Emily Maciel has played all 180 minutes on defense for SMSU, she has played 31 more minutes than any other player. 
  • Kenna Conley has made seven saves for the Mustangs playing in just one game. 
  • Haley Mason paces the team with three shots on the year. 
  • SMSU is allowing 15.5 shots per game and giving up 2.5 goals per contest.
  • Opponents have taken 16 corner kicks against the Mustangs so far.
  • Washburn is 4-1-1 against SMSU all-time dating back to to 2004. The two have not played since the Ichabods won 2-0 in 2018. 

Match #4 - vs Wayne State College

  • Emily Hester is in her third season as head coach of the Wildcats
  • Wayne State is 2-0 on the season coming off a 4-0 home win over William Jewell.
  • Last season the Wildcats went 3-11-4 overall and were 3-9-3 in the NSIC
  • Skylar Stueckrath leads WSU with nine points on four goals and an assist in only 72 minutes of action. 
  • Maia Vacks has three goals on the year in only six shots
  • Hayden Wallace leads the Wildcats with 136 minutes played, she has made five saves with no goals allowed. 
  • Chloe Schlines is just behind in minutes, logging 135 on defense
  • Nine players have at least one point already on the year. 
  • Wayne State has outscored opponents 10-0 with eight assists added
  • The Wildcats average 17.5 shots per game while only allowing 3.5 so far on the year. The difference is 20 to five in shots on goal 
  • Washburn all-time is 2-0 against Wayne State going back to 2006 with the last matchup a 5-0 Ichabod win in 2013.
