No. 16 Ichabod soccer faces Hornets in final regular season contest

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 16 Washburn Ichabod women's soccer team will close out the regular season with a Turnpike Tussle clash against the Emporia State Hornets on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. The Ichabods can claim the MIAA regular season title with a victory or a share of the title with a draw.

  • Washburn Ichabod soccer hits the road for the final game of the regular season, heading to Emporia State for the Turnpike Tussle.
  • The Ichabods and Hornets will face off on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. on the ESU Soccer Pitch.

--- BOD BREAKDOWN ---

  • Washburn is 12-3-2 so far in the 2024 season.
  • The Ichabods remain in a tie with Central Missouri for second place in the MIAA standings, one point behind Missouri Western. The Jennies and Griffons have completed their regular season schedules.
  • Washburn is ranked 16th in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Women's National poll.
  • The Ichabods were picked first in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll with 137 points.

  • Washburn earned two big home wins this past weekend, defeating Northwest Missouri 2-0 before knocking off MIAA leader Missouri Western 1-0.
  • After a scoreless first half, Khloe Schuckman scored two goals to give Washburn a Pink Out Game victory over Northwest Missouri.

  • Khloe Schuckman scored her seventh and eighth goals of the season against Northwest Missouri, extending her team lead. Schuckman now has 33 goals for her career.
  • Mackinly Rohn earned the assist on Schuckman's first goal with a short pass in the center of the box. Rohn now has 10 assists in her career as an Ichabod.
  • Grace Peterson made a long pass to set up Schuckman's second goal against Northwest Missouri. The assist was Peterson's first of her collegiate career.
  • Josie Boyle scored the only goal in Washburn's 1-0 win over Missouri Western. The goal was Boyle's second of the season and third of her career.
  • Aubrey Tanksley assisted on Boyle's goal with a well-placed corner kick to the back post. Tanksley, who earned her first start since Sep. 13, now has three assists this season.
  • Alli Harrington made seven saves against No. 15 Missouri Western, the most by an Ichabod goalkeeper this season. In four games since taking over as the starting goalkeeper, Harrington has recorded three clean sheets.

With a draw against the Hornets, Washburn shares the MIAA regular season title with Missouri Western, but the Ichabods will enter the MIAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed. A loss to Emporia State will give the Ichabods the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament.
  • The MIAA Championship Tournament begins on Sunday, Nov. 10 with the quarterfinals taking place on campus sites of the top-4 seeds.
  • The NCAA Tournament begins on Thursday, Nov. 21 and concludes with the National Championship game on Saturday, Dec. 14.

---OPPONENT QUICK SCOUT---

Match #18 - Emporia State University

  • The Hornets are coached by Jane Grimley-Gunn in her first season. Grimley-Gunn was previously the head coach at Missouri S&T for two seasons.
  • ESU is 6-7-3 this season and 4-5-2 in MIAA play, sitting in 8th place in the conference standings.
  • Last week the Hornets earned a 1-1 draw at home against Missouri Western and defeated Northwest Missouri 1-0 on the road.
  • Senior forward Hadlie Lowe leads ESU with five goals scored, while adding one assist for a team-high 11 points.
  • Junior defender Abby Bachman leads the Hornets with four assists. Bachman has also scored two goals, placing second on the team with eight points.
  • Junior goalkeeper Mackenzi Goen has played in 15 games this season, recording 66 saves with a save percentage of 0.767. Goen has a goals against average of 1.42.
  • Emporia State has an even goal differential this season, scoring and allowing 23 goals. The Hornets have been more efficient with their shots, with a shots percentage of 0.149 while holding their opponents to a 0.107 clip.
  • Washburn is 19-18-4 all-time against Emporia State.
  • The Ichabods and Hornets faced off four times in the 2023 season, splitting the season series 2-2.
  • Washburn took the first match, a 1-0 non-conference game at Emporia High School on Sep. 15, 2023. Ana Muruzabal scored the lone goal in the 75th minute.
  • ESU evened the series on Oct. 29, earning a 1-0 win at Yager Stadium to hand the Ichabods their only conference loss.
  • The teams then faced off in the semifinals of the conference tournament on Nov. 9, with the Hornets jumping out to a 3-0 lead before going down to 10 players after a red card. Jadyn Allen and Ana Muruzabal scored late goals for Washburn, but the Hornets held on 3-2 to eliminate the Ichabods.
  • The final meeting of the season came in the NCAA Third Round in Ashland, Ohio on Dec. 1. The Ichabods defeated the Hornets 2-1 after Khloe Schuckman scored a penalty kick goal in the 82nd minute. Schuckman also scored the opening goal in the 37th minute.
